So every single amount of money you do pay is balanced by ECB interest rate. Many british banks (like Barclay's) were involved in greek and irish debt. You do have also a huge political integrations at many levels (institutions, think tanks etc). France does fear UK in common european market for a simple and practical reason. If what you're saying about gold is true then you'd expect gold to have held a stable dollar price after you adjust for inflation. Maybe you should google gold prices from 1980 to 2001(hint 85% drop in its inflation adjusted value). There are plenty historical examples of inflation and even hyper-inflation in gold-backed currencies. Gold is more of a crisis hedge than an inflation hedge.
Money loses value, but nobody sane just has it laying around in their house to gather dust.
