Bluebottle watch 'Appalachian Music' parts 1&2. We know of this particular beautiful song because it has been kept alive by Jean Ritchie and her forbears, while the Industrial Revolution expunged it from the memory of it's cultural origins. rmm13c makes a valid point that singing style changes over time. Check out John Riley if you think all Irish singers are as melodious as Mary Black! The influence of music from other cultures is also evident, especially that of African slaves.
@Bluebottle83@Bluebottle83 Let me guess, you know nothing about folk music, now do you, Bluebottle? So why comment (twice!) on something you are ignorant of? Jean Ritchie is probably the most famous singer of Appalachian folk music in history. She is singing it in the style that it has been sung in the Southern Appalachian mountain in American since our colonial era in the 1600s and 1700s.
My god! Her voice hasn't changed in all these years! I first heard her in person in 1969 in Philadelphia. I'm so glad to see such a living treasure of Appalacia is still going strong!

I first heard this on 78rpm record in the late 1950's. My eldest daughter is called Hannah and I'm sitting here in tears. Great.

A horrible caterwauling rendition of a beautiful Celtic ballad - & wherever did she drag that last verse from? It doesn't belong to this song.
Nasty.

@rmm413c If murdering beautiful songs is part of your Appalachian folk music tradition, I'm glad I'm thousands of miles away.
