I have this for ambiance and a secondary source of heat when the power goes out during a storm. This gives off 9,000 BTU's of heat per hour with three cans. The cans burn for 2.5-3 hours. In my home my first floor is 500sq feet and I need only 6,000 BTU's to keep the place warm. It rises up and warms the second flloor even in -15C weather. I found a mantel for $50 and a 23 " gel insert that fits perfect for $150. It is not for primary source of heat in a cold climate. Beats electric fire.
I still have to take issue with your assertion that this is cheap the winter in this country lasts 4 months, @£100 (roughly $52) per month, this is equal to £400 ($208), i burn this in a classic victorian fire basket set in a limestone marble fireplace, i do`nt have a chimney in my lounge, yes it`s decorative and looks great in situ, your figures do not stack up, unless you are using it only once per week for 3 hours at a time,@ 9000 btus this will take the chill off most rooms even in Ayrshire
Why do people buy these for their large homes? This is for Apartments, condos and small homes that do not have fireplaces built in them, also they can be moved from room to room.
These fireplaces are ridiculously expensive. The gel fuel is 80 dollars for 24 cans and it takes at least 2 cans to make a decent fire. The gel fuel also does NOT give off enough heat. I had one of these, trust me, you are better off getting a gas or electric fireplace.
@dascoot , $80 or an entire winter, i am in scotland and use this in my apartment, your 80 bucks equates to £42 uk, if i burned the fire 5 days a week in my installed x3 50ml cans, that would cost £25 per week, so your costs !!!! for a winter would in effect last two weeks in the uk, welcome to the new world, this is expensive.
@mjm290853 Right, but like I said these are decorative. They don't give off much heat so it's just meant to be pretty to look at. If you want to heat a home, go gas or electric.. if you just want a nice fire to look at for a couple of hours, gel fuel is a cheap alternative.

They're for decoration, not heating your home. If you use them the right way, that $80 easily lasts an entire winter.
