  • Ok..didn't need to see this. Like some of the comments nonetheless.

  • Friends don't let friends operate ski lifts drunk..... ;-P LOL

  • Beats a high speed quad any day

  • that would be fun going up the hill backwards at that speed. also very painful

  • I've been a lift operator for three seasons in roll and that shit looks fucking scary hope that never will happen in the future seasons

  • i could see that turning actual ride... WHEE...WHEE...WHEE...WHEE!

  • this is good

  • I'm gonna be a lift op this season at a resort in WV and they showed us this

  • At some point you have to ignore the "NO JUMPING FROM LIFT" sign

  • Winter Park Resort, the base is the place.

  • What kind of toaster did you use to film this?

  • @OneManTeam51 one from 1990

  • @OneManTeam51 guess what? they didn't have blue ray camcorders in the 70s.

  • Why would you even test it that fast?

  • If you are on a ski lift and it does a roll back, fuck the ten to twenty feet. You jump.

  • Thats

  • I think Shaun White would appreciate this.

  • They should put politicians on it.

  • why aren't there humans in those lifts?

  • @llovdw "hurr durr let's put some people in this lift while we perform destructive testing on it"

  • @Munchy365 exactly

  • well im the black diamond chairlift man! love it! I've made 4 chairlift videos!

  • 0. This (old) video should have been the origin of Tosh-0's (new) schtick on coming up with funny captions.

    1. Cary/Dad, remember this at Squaw Valley, Shirley Lake, a million years ago?! Great way to get your money back for a day lift-ticket.

    2. Looks like an "E-Ticket" to me. (You gotta be old to understand this caption.)

    3. It's free to ride them down.

    4. "Keep your Tips Down" (when going backwards)

    5. Tosh-0 ... help us here !!!

    5. ,,,

  • the newest in ski lift innovation the ultimate failure feature

  • MADE IN CHINA

  • Ahhh the days of being a lifty, smoking joints in your booth with the thought of this could happen at any moment in the back of your head.

  • @ mrduckfan101 because all of the brakes and anti-rollback devices have been

bypassed or mechanically blocked.and the "heavy side" ,the side you would ride

up the lift is fully loaded with concrete to simulate passenger weight.the lift is

rolling backwards.the lift wont slow down untill all the weight on the line has equaled out.

  • Wow. June 18 1990

  • i wanna ride this thing!

  • lmao, i may never ride a ski lift again!

  • @lunarelf No big deal, this was done sort of on purpose. The rollback wasn't planned to happen like that, but they were doing destructive testing on the chairlift before removing it, so multiple safety features were disabled for the test and the operator hit the wrong button causing the rollback. They say if an old chairlift rolls back more than 50 feet it is safer to jump, but per mile ridden, chairlifts are safer than commercial airlines, and far far safer than cars.

  • On the top terminal, did you see the wire snap when a chair got flung extremely high?

  • Why is the chairlift so fast in reverse?

  • This should be the new death penalty.

  • Thats a YAN-lift, they are really dangerous!

  • @sorti314 Actually it was only modified by Yan, the original manufacturer was Riblet.

  • @sorti314 That's not a Yan. That's a 1963 Riblet double. Pretty easy to spot a Yan, I don't know how you confused the two.

  • Fun ride :D

  • Jesus talk about nightmare fuel.

  • is this real or fake ? :s

  • @ButlerMaz 100% real. I've ridden that chairlift before. It had safety features to prevent a roll-back, they were just manually disabled for a test. The chairlift was being removed and scrapped anyways, so they were going to do some destructive testing on it, they just didn't plan on it being that destructive. Basically they disabled the other brake that would have prevented a roll-back and the operator hit the wrong button.

  • EPIC FAIL

  • FUCK! I am very scared of chairlifts now :O

  • LOL @ 1911 version

  • Intriguing. I've never seen ski lift chairs do barrel rolls before.

  • More U.N. propaganda...

  • unless you're on a high speed chair or gondola, this shit can still happen. you gotta bail asap instead of getting to the bottom

  • The win way to dismantle a chairlift.

  • "Watch these guys run!"

The don'y run for a full 15 seconds after that's said.

  • Please check yourself for loose items that may get snagged on the chair. Or you may end up getting dragged and horrifically mangled as the chair lift reverses sending chairs flying and shredding them into bits with you along with them. Have fun skiing!

This needs to be on every chair lift.

  • Yo what's up it's the black diamond and I know how to ride a chairlift!

  • The point of this being...?

  • wow that would be sooooooooooooooo fun

  • @xboxmaster555 Until you were flung into a tree.

  • Some poor bastard pushed a lever four inches too far and ends up years in debt. Rough.

  • eject eject eject !!!!!1

  • Fuck Skiing, I'd rather ride this thing!!!

  • @qoaa If I had a dime for every girl that said this about me I'd buy Google.

  • @RichtheEvil You're talking about a snowboard correct?

  • I whip my chair back and forth, I whip my chair back and forth...

  • then they packed it up and sent it here to sandia ski in new mexico

  • so i guess now we all know if were on a chair lift and it starts rolling backwards.... FUCKING JUMP FOR YOUR LIFE!

  • ONLY IF THERE WAS PEOPLE ON IT!!!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Wow.

  • Awesome, glad someone did this and youtubed it.

    Question though: why the fuck!?

Is accidentally loading your ski lift with concreate blocks a common danger at resorts?

  • The latest high speed chair!!! :D

  • пиздец

  • they'd run at those speeds normally if it werent for all the damn Texans falling down!

  • 0:36 "Fuuuuuucccckkk!!"

  • In a new twist, the red shirt is the one with the best survival instinct.

  • @MegaEpictroll You must like skiing.

  • I know have a fear of chairlifts.

  • you're gonna need some new chairs

  • Now I know that if this happens while I'm on a lift, I'm jumping ship, even if it means several broken bones.

  • @MuNkaPOtaMuS As long as there has been a decent amount of snow fall, if you ditch your ski's first you shouldn't have any broken bones. Through personal experience the grounds way softer with 1 ft of snow on it. I fell off a lift a few years back, luckily I emerged fine.

  • What a cool feature.

  • @Kill3rification fuck you

  • @snowlift9 same here, i was a lift op at mammoth mtn

  • same thing happend at devils head in wisconsin. Only there were people on it :o

  • @snowlift9 was that at devils head

  • God I'm glad it's not 1990 anymore :) lifts are much safer now!

  • fun for the whole family

  • Wow, I really want to go skiing now. As if it wasn't bad enough that the skiing itself had a good chance of killing you.

  • wanna ride dat

  • that poor old lift.

  • taliban Disney World.

  • weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee :D

  • so much energy... anything on those chairs when they speed up is fucked up

  • lol 0:34 look at that guy aut the left corner, did he died?

  • @herroxxxxx lol i thot that too....that guy was actually the third one you saw in the screen that just kinda stands there, after the main 2 boogie lol

  • @herroxxxxx no it just looks like he gets hit but he doesnt.

  • damn!

  • i suddenly dont want to go on ski lifts

  • I went to Winter Park CO a year before this video was posted. O_O

  • this video is sooooooo funny

  • Imagine sitting on one of those

    Nightmare of a lifetime

  • @groombridge34 its a double so its ok

  • i wanna ride....how much per ride?

  • ive been on a roll back before shit my self becuase it droped down they must of learned from this thank god lol

  • is it open again or was it taken down?

  • if you're on a chair during a rollback...JUMP!

  • i thought for a second people were on it

  • need to add some death metal in the background

  • @Bbracko

    Death metal is gay.

  • that sucks

  • I've tried to picture myself in that situation and I would definitely try everything I could, but if those didn't work, yeah, I'd bail, lol

  • haha i had to watch this video for being a lift op.

  • Ya This made me Cry Cuz i think i used to ride that lift

  • @snowlift9 I totally wached this too

  • Cool video. Kind of a sad way to see a lift go. Not many Riblet centerpoles left.

  • They should load this thing up with politicians and lawyers.

  • @gpost2800 hahahahaha!!!! So TRUE!!! "Hey My Blair...Bush wants you to sit next to him on this ride OK"....."Whats that? Yea...its totally safe".

  • I hope this happens when i'm running the chair

    hehehehehe

  • @burton409 Honestly, how would you react? Besides running as fast as you could away from the chair?

  • @wizzleslady hahahaha well, first i would try to do the emergency break stuff they teach you. if that didnt work run and watch from a distance.

  • The things flying off of the chairs are cement disks. The lift was loaded past capacity, since every chair had a set of disks . . .

  • ROFLMFAO

  • Bent, like Pretzels, yeah.

  • looks like a F'd up carnaval ride.

  • That's the Looking Glass lift at Winter Park, Colorado!

  • Nope, The old eskimo lift.

  • @CharlieAirlines That's the old chair lifet at the base of Cranmer. Snoasis would be behind the trees to the upper right.

  • RoflCop~~ u are noob...

  • Pointless... but TOTALLY FUCKING AWESOME!!!

  • thats wy those chairlifts are made in china!

  • I would ride that lift with no hesitations (after they fix it of course).

I would say you would have better luck winning the lottery in all 50 states. Then being on a chair lift Rollback. Yes multiple systems failed at Devils head. Still don't know the cause but you can bet all ski areas will learn from it and take preventative measures.

  • Sebskater, they took an old life that was going to be taken down and did testing on it to see how it would hold up to failures.

    It did not hold up.

And that reverse brake is freggin important LOLLL

  • fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail fail

  • i dont get it

  • 3. Roll back detecter. Little wheel that rides on the lifts "bullwheel". If the lift Rolls Back it trips the Hydraulic brake I talked about before.

4.The "Dogs" a few huge chunks of steel that ride on little wheels above the Bull wheel. They can only go in one direction. If the lift Rolls Back they drop down and lock the bull wheel from going in reverse.

Just the stuff we have on our lifts.

  • All resort chairlifts have to have this, it government regulations, and that's how they are made.

and they did this video to see what could potentially happen in case all this safety equipment fails

  • The lifts have muliple preventers

1.When the chair stops Mechanical brakes are applied automacticly.

    2. The hydraulic brake: This brake is pumped up before the lift will run. Picture a clamp on a peice of steel. Once the switch is tripped the clamp slams shut.

  • Funny WOOW !

  • I dont get it what´s going on

    ?

  • What resort did you work at?

  • @willsbigtrip

    A major one.

  • @willsbigtrip a major one

  • wait... wat? why is it doing that?

  • they should put this in disney world

  • @whuzak lol

  • @whuzak to have politicians and lawyers ride them.

  • thats goin fukin fast

  • haha theres a lift at my mountain that come around way to fast at the bottom and basically takes your legs out if your not ready this reminds me off it its not that severe though

  • sweet ass

  • sick

  • why is it going so damn fast

  • Because it's loaded with simulated "passengers" (the concrete blocks). A ski lift is essentially an elevator that's tilted diagonally. This is what would happen on any chairlift if you disabled the breaks and let the weight of all the passengers come sliding down the mountain. Gravity is a bitch!

  • Thanks.

Finally one comment that explains it all which means you're the best out of all commenters here. Thumbs up!

  • Gravity pushed me on the floor *cries* WHY!!!!!!! j/k lol

  • No gravity is not to blame... It's Global Warming...

  • Oh, my mistake. =]

  • now theres your problem!

  • haha had to watch this shit in lift op. training.

  • Haha 2:11! Thats how you get off a chair lift right there. Just throw them onto the slope! Haha. Thats how you keep the lines short

  • LoL !!!!

  • Thats an old riblet

  • ohahaha lol the guys ran then came bac y watch this waste of time y do this test waste of time and money lol

  • This video is only a small part of a longer 15 minute video called "chairlift destructive testing". It was done on an old Riblet centerpole double at Winter Park CO. This video is a valuable training resource for those who operate and maintain chairlifts since it shows everything that can go wrong. Also, part of what was cut out of this version was where they mentioned that this uncontrolled rollback was unintentional.
