yeah weight distribution has to be it. less bogging down in the snow means less wasted fuel and time as well as less chance to fall through some ice :p

This is pretty much it. It's a balance between weight and fuel capacity. An ordinary 4x4 couldn't carry enough fuel to make the trip and maintain flotation on the soft snow. Going large enough to carry that fuel increases the weight, and you'd have to distribute that weight over a larger area...50% greater area going from a 4x4 to a 6x6 makes a huge difference.

I'm planning on building one with 47" pitbull growlers instead of the 44" Trxus STS.

is it an actual six wheel drive, or are the center wheels mor for support?

I'm not sure how the center wheels would be for support cause they would block the drive shaft from getting to the rear axle. Most likely the center axle is getting the direct power from the tranny and the rear axle is getting it's power from the center axle. like on a tandem axle tractor (semi, big rig, ..).
