In This Boy, John was afraid he wouldn't hit the high note during his solo. Before the song began you can see the 2 of them laughing and also right before the solo. He didn't do bad. I think he backed away from the microphone just in case he didn't hit the note. John's voice, while lovely, wasn't strong. In this clip Ringo looks bizarre. It's because they were in Miami and out in the sun and the water all day. John doesn't look that great either. Only people who tan look OK.
The great 60's.... Where live performances sounded like the actual record, especially in the Beatles case... There will never be as much excitement as there was between 1962 and 1969 from the beginning of Beatlemania to the end.
"Paul - look at me! Psst...Paul...look at me! Look at me dammit" "No, I'm not going to look at you because I'll laugh" "Fine - I'll make a silly noise!"
will never be the Beatles sing another song that is a trio like this ... despite their differences, this shocking and I love each one combine to form one ... it's cute, the song is beautiful! makes my hair stand on end with excitement, so if these things do mourn! Lennon's voice is beautiful at 1:04 minute to 1:33 minute...wow that much time =,)
I love how Ringo is looking around checking out the audience......I never missed an Ed Sullivan show when they were on!!.....thanks for posting this...
Notice right at the start(0.08) John sings "This boy" & Paul & George sing it correctly "That boy". Together it sounds like "Thas boy". That's why Paul looks at John & smiles, because he knew he probably did it on purpose.LOL They kept screwing it up at the studio. Watch Anthology.
What the hell was Lennon doing at 1:57-1:58? LMAO. "I'm in front of 100 million people on American television; I think I'll make some random falsetto noise in the middle of the song, but just slightly off mic."
@gpc Not sure if it was Paul or John who made the noise...but my theory is whoever it was anticipated George's guitar phrase...and was just a TAD too early...
The two of them are on the verge of hysterics through the whole song. Not sure what the in-joke was this particular night!
@gpc It wasn't just their pure music awesomeness that got them to the heights they reached, (though they certainly had that). Part of it was their charm and humor. I think it was Paul that did the falsetto thingy from the way he backed off the mic just before, then John smiles as if in reaction to it. I could be wrong, doesn't matter really. Part of their allure was that they were fun.
@TheNeonRabbit Yeah, absolutely. Three part harmony (that was rare even for them) with no mixing boards while playing instruments. Whew. And they frikking nailed it. You can hear Johns' voice overpower the mike when he get's an inch too close but what a butt kicking voice... Additionally, the pressure was on, because they considered this their only shot at "making it" in the US. It seemed to have worked.
Their harmonies are so tight, I love music and the first time I heard this song I got goosebumps all over. These are some of the best harmonies ever.

Most artists struggle writing one melody. Let alone 3!!!!

John sings the melody throughout, but George's part, in the middle, is the hardest to sing, in my opinion....

Only John and Paul laughed at John's "Hehe!"
George looks so serious! But sexy...as always.
Ringo probably didn't hear it while playing drums.
