i have actually watched this show on columbus pbs 's station---it was hilarious except for the divorce episode-i wish i could talk as fast and clear as him
This show is like Fawlty Towers, which we also all love. Chef is a funny show about the life of the people who prepare our meals at Gourmet Establishments. All we can do is try to appreciate their hard work for trying to provide us with a decent meal.
They should have restaurant worker's appreciation day in the UK. Or, Chef's day in the UK.
We work in the trenches of commercial industry, and at the end of the day, all we want is a freshly killed Tilapia that was in the aquarium staring at us.
Man, 'Chef!' is so funny, and Lenny Henry is one of my faves. The premise is similar to "Fawlty Towers", but the character dynamics make it so different.
In NYC theres a local PBS station that shows the series from time to time in there friday night britcom line up. They took it off for the winter pleagde drive. It will return sometime in the next two years.
Well, naturally the tracks sound human, as it's humans who are recorded laughing... :-)
But from what I heard on this vid, it seems they always laugh the same way, no variation. That's the way to identify genuine audience laughter vs. canned.
That sucks. I'm intelligent enough to figure out what parts are and aren't funny on my own. Too bad they have to package it for the lowest common denominator.
Maybe I'll just wait until they do a marathon on PBS or something, then record & burn to DVD.
What's with the laugh track? I caught this on PBS (the best we in the US could do until BBC America for BritComs), and no hint of a laugh track; it assumes that the TV audience is intelligent enough to laugh on their own, which was fairly refreshing. Hope the laugh track's not included on the DVD.
I've spent many years in country club kitchens, and this show was on at that time- it is amazingly accurate, as far as the way most chefs of any value/talent behave. I was shocked, at how very appropriate/accurate lenny's representaion was. I used to LMAO at this show (mid 90's?), and still do... very clever... and well written....

The salt rant is lurking out there...I've seen it on You Tube.
First two seasons: brilliant. Last season: Not so much. Whole series is available on DVD, reasonably cheap on Froogle.

As long as you bought the Chef! DVDs, maybe you can tell me: do the DVDs have a laugh track on them, or do they assume the audience is intelligent?
Thanks

to even fake cook and act takes a lot of movement. These actors show they have incredible timing and ability.

I quite agree. It's as good as the best of "Blackadder" and "Red Dwarf," or even "Vicar of Dibley." It remains a treasure of a show, to be certain.
