This was written by Jerry Foster and Bill Rice. You can check it in the BMI catalog. I saw Paycheck the last time at the Longhorn in Nashville right after he got out of prison. He had gained a lot of weight in prison and I said, "Damn, Johnny, looks like that prison food agreed with you pretty good." He laughed and said, "You can hardass me all you want about being in prison but don't you say nothing more about me being fat." We all had a big laugh and it got us all over the "prison" deal.
i never got to here much of paycheck, in new jersey you dont get this kind of music on the radio any more. the last time i heard the real country music was back in the 1950s. beleve it or not jersey was a hot spot back then for the greats like webb pierce, faron young. this is a great song and johnny is a true to heart singer he does a fine job with it. thank GOD for XMradio, also YouTube. thanks for posting
This song always makes my day. Johnny's unique voice and style have influenced many other artists as we know. When I listen to the lyrics I think - why doesn't someone call another's name whom they have known in the past when they see them? Of course, there is the thought that perhaps a spouse is jealous of anyone speaking to theirs so a good reason for not calling their name. That's such a shame if that's the case. What a great song. Thanks once again for posting this treasure. - Paula
Jeff Lytle was Johnny's brother, who was his road manager, front man, lead guitarist and sang harmony with John on the road. jeff was a "great" singer in his own right.
This is a good version of a great song but I like his earlier version that he sung a couple keys higher. I have it on an old cassette tape (remember those?) that I about wore out listening to this. He was a great stylist. Too bad he never got the recognition I always thought he deserved.
My favorite by Johnny also, and in my opinion one of the best country songs there is.Flashbell didn't mention that Johnny did at least a couple of dozen records as Donny Young. The Bear Family did a conplete box set of these records.including one never released until Bear did it ,I believe. Story Behind The Photograph. What a great song that is
This song by Johnny is just pure gold. I don't think anyone can sing a ballad the way he does. He's just got it . The song is a little sad and brings back some memories for me. It is good to dance to, for sure. Thank you again for posting this gem. - Paula
This is my absolute favorite song by Johnny Paycheck. Many years ago in Destin, Florida I used to meet Johnny occasionally in the Donut Hole coffee shop. He was a quite a character and had a unique style of singing. I miss those days, and I miss Johnny.
East - you may already know that Johnny's brother's name is Jeff Lytle but I can find nothing further about him. Whether or not he is still in the music business would be hard to say. If he sounds like Johnny I know he's a great singer. It would be good to know more about him as I never knew he had a musician brother . Thanks again flashbell for this video. - Paula
Where did you get that? Paycheck was not the drunk that some people thought he was. Johnny was a honorable man! If you live in a glass house, don't throw rocks.
Here I am again. Not too long ago I saw a rerun of the time Johnny was on George Jones' TV show.
When he talked about some of his career it sounded like his "outlaw" style was his favorite. I do like some of his tough guy songs but wish he had done more ballads. I, too, have just about worn out my old cassette of this song by Johnny. I'll be wearing this video out ! Thanks again for posting. -Paula
I have a new user name as my old one - PaulinaRena- got lost somehow after I got a new server. Apparently Google didn't recognize my old one. I am trying to get my Favorites list back up and running again and Johnny is a super artist whom I definitely have to have as a favorite. - Paula
This is my favorite of Johnny's. He could sure sing a ballad and it makes my heart skip a beat whenever I hear it.This doesn't sound like the original version of this song. I have a cassette with this song on it. It brings back memories of my first love at 18 whom I saw for the first time 25 years later after we broke up. Paula
I agree. This is a great Paycheck song but it must not be the first recording of it---it's certainly not the best one. I have it on an old cassette that I've practically worn out that has the quintesential version on it. This one is far blander. I liked Paycheck best when he sounded like he was mad about something all the time. Not so well after he mellowed a little with age.
THANKS FOR GETTING THIS ONE UP - It doesn't sound like he was giving this song his all. Still, he hit the top 20 with it. In '75 he was getting loaded a lot....of course.
GEORGE DID HELP AND THAT'S A CREDIT TO GEORGE...HE DID IT BECAUSE JOHNNY WAS A GOOD MAN AND A GREAT SINGER..AND A LOT OF FUN TO BE AROUND

It's my favourite Paycheck song too. Clever words, and doesn't the last line just get you? "I'd give all I own for just one minute there."
