James plays rhythm because that's what he prefers, but he's great at lead too, you just rarely get to hear it. Out of the two, James is a far better player. Kirk regularly messes up solos, often playing them completely out of time, and over-bending frequently. You don't get that with James.

I do not deny the fact that he MIGHT give some contribution or the other to solos, but its foolish to think someone as good as Kirk Hammett cannot write his own solos.
