@whoo689 Sting is certainly a top 10 wrestler, but there's a reason Ric Flair is considered a top 3 wrestler, and that's not just in the land of kayfabe. All the stuff you see heels do today was largely invented by Ric Flair. He is one of the reasons wrestling is where it is today, and this match shows you that it wasn't just his personality, he was also a damn fine wrestler between the ropes.
@loopin24 Flair does a cross body when he comes off the top. Sometimes he uses a forearm shot but mainly a cross body. It may have been a long time ago but at one time Flair was one of the best wrestlers in the world.
@1981CrueHead Word up. I remember watching Flair way back in the early 90s, well up until WCW died and always hated that SOB... it only later when I realized just how awesome he really was.
I wish wrestling had more heels like Flair, maybe it'd be worth watching the live stuff and not reliving the glory days on youtube.
@loopin24 Yeah Ric was the biggest draw that ever live. But I actually believe WCW would still be here on Saturday nights had they not going head to head with the WWF. WWF not WWE killed WCW. Regardless Ric was probaly the best wrestler of his day. he could keep you occupied all night with his ring work , his mannerisms and his promo's. He was red hot back then and he's actually the hottest thing in TNA right now as well.
@1981CrueHead I don't know, they might be still around, but if they had stayed Saturdays I doubt we would have seen wrestling as dynamic and amazing as we had with the Monday night war... though I guess it's sad we had to lose WCW in order to have those in the end.
I haven't watched TNA in a while, I might have to check it out, hopefully it has some of the better parts of WCW mixed in with the better parts of wrestling as a whole, anything to give WWE something to have to work to beat.
The thing that strikes me about this match, compared to modern WWE, is the use of holds. Nowadays, it seems the primary way to 'weaken' one's opponent is by using striking attacks. I find holds far more convincing, and think they add far more to the psychology of the match.
Great match...ridiculous ending. You go through all of that for one of the refs to declare it a draw...stupid. Great match, great performance, awful booking.
@cbaldwinjr It was a great match regardless of the ending...it MADE Sting and its all about whether the fans leave happy or upset...that matters and the fans left happy
24varner - all they need is a little re-education which is wat youtube does, now i don't know how old you are but i'm 18 and to be quite honest, i prefer matches from the past, some that took place wen i was either young or not alive at all. in fact the most recent match i find interesting was hbk undertaker match of last year. dat match had a bit of throwback in it too. but i find wrestling now to embarrassing too watch at times and the PPV are the only things i truly pay attention to now.
@24varner and its sad cuz its not like WWE doesn't have the talent to make this possible. its just that they lack the common sense. i think they feel that this kind of wrestling is outdated and they're desperately looking for the new fad of sports entertainment.
A pure classic. KWE ( I refuse to call it WWE because Vince has taken this sport and turned it into a saturday night live/Disney attraction, playing to the kids, hence KWE or kids wrestling entertainment. Hell, at least TNA has bloodbaths on occasion) could NEVER make a match this great
I like how JR and Schiavone stay mellow thru the match then turn up the intensity gradually throughout the climax instead of jus yelling thru the whole thing like wat happens nowadays . . . adds that extra "thing" to a match pushing them past gr8ness
This is THE match that put Sting over and made him a star. Ric admitted in his book that Steve(Sting) more than carried his weight in this match and Flair promided him the world title, which Sting got in 1990 in Baltimore
hey guys, i'm trying to find some videos of sting when he was stalked by a masked man. during the match ric flair was revealed as the masked man. if you know the title of it, please tell me. i've been trying to find it forever.
Yeah, that's the same Sting. He spent the first 10 or so years of his career with blonde hair, from when he teamed with Jim Hellwig (Warrior) as the Blade Runners to mid 90s in WCW. He then started growing his hair out and letting it be brown... then when he changed to the Crow-influenced Sting, he kept his hair long and brown/black. He's gone through quite a few looks.
I think you mean mid 80's, and it wasn't in WCW. WCW didn't exist as a promotion until about 1988, although the NWA TV show "World Championship Wrestling" which later became "WCW Saturday Night" had been around much longer.
this was the 1st big match I watched as a kid. It's still one of the greatest wrestling matches I've ever seen. NWA hit it out the ballpark with Clash of the Champions
Holy Shit, I was really shocked to find this here! This is the first pro wrestling match that I ever saw, and it's what got me into it to begin with. Hell yeah for putting this up!
No I said NWA is a joke now not Sting and Flair. They are two of the best ever. I was talking about how crappy the NWA is now. Have you peeped out that horrible show they have on? GARBAGE. I was not calling Flair and Sting jokes they are legends.
If memory serves me correct, this was their first match against each other. I don't recall them facing each other before this, which is amazing for them to have such great chemistry their first time out.
Very good match. Ranks up there with some of the best WWF and NWA matches.

Dammit jim ross calm down, Flair did not fly over the top of the judges. He rattled near them for a second and then fell down to the right of them.
Wow, Ross used to suck back then.
