I love everything about this song -- It always brings a smile to my face. "Kiss you for each leaf on every tree" and "around our yard, I'll nail a fence so high" are such perfect lines.
Bob Dylan was originally supposed to do these songs. When he was with Woody in the hospital Woody told him to go get the songs but it was just Arlo and the baby sitter at the house so she didnt let Dylan get the songs because she didnt know who he was. They just sat there until Woddys daughter contacted Billy Bragg about them and he eventually contacted the guys from Wilco. It would have been great to hear what Dylan would have done with the songs but these guys did a great job
@sfsoccerguy interesting! I always understood that they were books of lyrics found by Woody's wife after his death. Read the back of the Mermaid Avenue sleeves which have got much more info. Interesting comment tho' and could well believe it. Thank you. Xj
yes, either woody's widow or daughter approached Billy Bragg to do Mermaid Avenue with unreleased Woody songs, least this is to the best of my recollection. Woody never recorded any of the songs, he only wrote the lyrics
One of the best love songs ever written.

A very sweet song...written by Bob Dylan...actually. I'd never heard it until Billy Bragg and Wilco and came along.
