  • Tower of Power asked what is hip.

    And the answer is?

    Don Ellis.

  • thanks very much for sharing! I was always fan of Don's Jazz since 69.

Do you have more of Don?

  • Anyone know the name of this music?

    Its just wondefull!

  • "If you are referring to the Title Track of ELECTRIC HEART, the name of the piece is "Water Jewel".

  • Thanks a lot,the name of the album is "Haiku",

    wonderfull piece.

  • As a graduate student at USC in the mid-sixties, I was a faithful fan whenever the band played at Bonesville on Melrose. I was inspired to write my first big band chart -- Take Five -- and did it in seven eight. I asked him if he would look it over. He said he would and when he saw the first page, said "Oh yeah. I did the same chart -- in FOUR! Dontcha love it?

  • It was Miles who called the four valve trumpet weird after he played a few notes and experimented with the fourth valve. There were some sounds that were not mainstream from the Ellis big band but I don't know of any that could be called weird. Four string basses, three drummers, the tape loop solos Don played with himself were not weird, just not what you were used to hearing. For instance , having all the horns and reeds miked gave a different balance for the listener.

  • I was at the table next to Miles and his wife at Shelley's Manne Hole one Monday night when the Don Ellis band was performing. At a break, Don came down and chatted with Miles then handed him his quarter tone horn. Miles played a few notes and rather quickly, returned it with the comment "Weird man!"

  • I knew Don Ellis & some of orchestra members.

I'm very honored because I was a close friend of Don Ellis's.

  • And it's a honor to hear from friends of Don Ellis as I never got that chance to meet him. John Vizzusi, Filmmaker

  • An old Downbeat magaziner featuring a blinfold test with Miles(where Miles would hear a recording and have to guess the artist with a critique)...they played a Don Ellis solo...Miles did'nt know who it was, but did'nt give Ellis very high marks as a trumpet player...also, it might be argued that Miles with his Sketches of Spain, was into world music before Ellis...don't get me wrong though, I personally thought Ellis's music was a kick!

  • Holy Grail!!

  • I am eagerly awaiting the day I will be able to see this film. Any plans for a DVD/VHS release?

  • Life sometimes is really really unfair!

Don Ellis left this world way too soon...And that is sad...Tremendously sad

  • Yes... TOO sad, but he gave us, his music.

There is a video where he plays with his "electrofonic trumpet" is great.

  • "live at the fillmore" and "tears of joy" are two of the most astounding recordings i have ever heard.

they definately have to be at the top in terms of greatest live recordings.

  • lovely stuff

  • awesome

  • It's great stuff, John....we can hardly wait....

  • can't wait
