  • What type of clay is that that you are using......

  • I am going to attempt this on monday when I get back in class!

  • dee dee dee dee i am the egg man =D

  • Never thought that throwing a pot could be hard. Watching other people do it makes it look kind of easy. By reading the comments i find that apperently it is hard. By the way, i never acctually tried to throw a pot. (looks fun)

Oh yeah, and when you need a wheel how do you get one? I mean does it it come in your house like an oven? Do you have to by it from a hobbie store how much do they cost? How many wheels do you have?

  • um... ive been looking for a video by you on how to make a mug or a cup with a handle. can you do a tutorial on how to make one? i cant find it from you. THANKS!

  • I don't even make clay pottery or anything like that. But the videos are still fun to watch.

  • Is it a kick wheel or a electric... Looks like your pumping it with your leg...

  • @JenetteMonster kick

  • me emociona verte trabajar,no entiendo tus palabras pero con tus manos expresas un idioma universal,,gracias por tanto talent!!!

  • I've used this technique, then cut it in half making it a jar. I cut at an angle so that the top still fits into the bottom. Thanks as always.

  • i have three questions simon

    1) are these pots just decoration or can they have some purpose?

    2) instead of leaving a hole on the top can you just pke a hole in the side

    3) and would you reccomend practicing this for making flower pots, because i have trouble narrowing the necks when try making flower pots

  • coo coo ca choo!

  • Hamada did this and lifted it off the hump and then laid it on it's side as a hot water bottle.

I always thought that was way beyond me but now I'm not so sure.

I might manage the egg but I'm not sure about the hot water bottle.

How about that for a clip Simom?

    Thanks as always

  • ha ha that is funny, that is what I do as well. I make "hanging eggs" and then cut different patternes in them and sell them as either hanging eggs for tea lights or birdfeeders. I should send you a photo of my version.

  • Very fun idea. Thanks.

  • Yikes I forgot this..Can those felt circles go on bottom of eggs/possible pumpkins to prevent scratches? I ask b/c I have eggs all over a beautiful hand-carved mantle sitting over a 49-50" (front open) fireplace w/41-42" (back open) brick fireplace w/ 14-15" high hearth. I'd love to make giant eggs for Ostara (Easter), pumpkins 4 Samhain, poss hand-built horn of plenty for thanksgiving/Harvest-time, then ornament shapes/clay decora presents for Yule (Christmas). Felt rings would lessen scratches

  • I'm actually a collector of eggs, some are more than 20+ yrs old. My oldest gave me this beautiful silver egg with ornate decorations in the manner of incising as John81150 mentioned. Is it possible to incise an egg such as this & if so, when is the best time to attempt it? peri to pre-leather, leather, or just post-leather yet prior to greenware stage so it doesn't stick?

Is it possible to add a hinge to one side for careful opening? I'm guessing not. The egg gift plays music w/2 dancerss.

  • One more thing b4 I forget... I wrote you awhile back about throwing pumpkins in an enclosed manner then added a dollop of clay up top in shape of a stem. Is it possible following the making of this egg to widen out the sides more, close the form, run lines down the side like a Jack O'Lantern then incise the eyes, mouth, etc.. then add the stem to top but cut the top away w/ fettle knife to add candle later? Vertically squished egg into pumpkin shape for Samhain. Any thoughts?

  • I actually feel confident enough to give an answer... hope this helps :)

Yes, your basic idea is workable. Best to throw a piece like in the video first, and after you close it, you can add lines and sink the lid in a little. After it stiffens a few min, add the hole for expansion. When clay stiffens but isn't quite leather, you can cut the lid opening and attach a stem carefully. Best to fire together, could be tricky, and could cause sagging if the stem is heavy. Good luck! Sounds nice :)

  • Digi: Thx. I was hoping to have the studio built in time but it seems we have to move the freaking studio to the OTHER side of the house thx to the town's ordinances as if a few ft will make a diff. We've already gone rounds w/the power co & got that straight now the town's making us move it completely to the other side of the house. I was looking forward to having the back door by the studio w/my guide's run in the back near it. Now, I don't know what I'll do w/the free run. There's no door ..

  • Have you seen the candle luminaries that a potter in Texas makes from these egg shapes. He does some beautiful incising. He has a video if you search for Texas Potter. Thanks for the videos Simon.

  • Very helpful video:) Thanks again.

  • That watering thing is one of the first things I noticed when I started to watch your clips. I had learned to just dip my hands. The pot formed a spiral, and was wasted. Now it´s much easier to pull up the clay. It´s really hot here in Sweden too. 33 degrees C. I don´t know what that is in F. Ase in Sweden

  • Hi Simon,

Very nice and decorative shape ! Thank you for sharing your imagination with us ! Waiting for your next idea with impatience !

    Very hot here too, ..

  • What is the purpose of those eggs? And won't they blow up?
