@Lesley246 The title Scotland's Shame refers to sectarianism in Scotland - primarily focusing on Rangers FC's own anti-Catholic and anti-Irish traditions.
@ScottMcDonald27 Hm, I didn't know that. There was a good article in the observer about Neil Lennon not long ago that was all about exactly that. Surprised to have learnt something from a youtube comment, thank you :)
@MrSoldierboi420 T.M. Devine has a book of the same name, published in 2000. The subheading reads: 'Bigotry and Sectarianism in Modern Scotland'. I'm no Scot, but if this is a major problem in Scotland then I guess it would be safe to say that this *might* be what the song is about... at least partly.
@MrSoldierboi420 It's just a feeling. There are sadly some very bigoted people in Scotland, who still think what religion you are, or what team you support really matters. People who attribute the song to Rangers, are in my opinion missing the whole point, and I'm a Celtic supporter. Sorry for the late reply, and if I came across like a know it all, it's just my take on it. What a tune though.
This is... Walking numbly through naturally barren lands. Being sensitized to a cool breeze while sleep deprived. A fire of cynically driven ambition within. Betrayal and revolution. A war of idealism pitted against cold reality
@plakk That's fine. I just don't understand your need to put down bands/songs other ppl like. I'm not fond of kesha but that doesn't mean I go out of my way to inform those who are of my disinterest. It would be rather... dickish, & a bit narcissistic if I did...
Anyhow, I wish you luck on finding more easily digestable & instantly gratifying music. And of course, I assume you'll afford me the respect of enjoying this beautiful work of art in peace. Thanks :)
Mogwai have publically stated the titles of their songs have nothing to do with the content.
Therefore I would ask all the old firm "fans" on here to just listen to the music and enjoy it. Otherwise fuck off and spout your sectarian bile elsewhere
Rangers fans truly are the shame of Scotland but celtic fans are just as bad both clubs are being used as a front for the release of political frustrations reading comments on here that much is true as there are very few comments related to the actual game of football but they are related to what each club supposedly stands for these issues need to be addressed by society and not locked away where they will only build up resentment.
I imagine myself directing a movie all the time, and I would use this song to show a persons feet/legs walking for 8 whole minutes through thick and thin, through mud, dirt, water, snow, sleet, fog, through people, over branches, over dead animals, over dead people killed in a war, over money, over politicians, over corruption, over poverty, through famish, through war, through love and hate, through life. Getting to stairs, walking up. All the way up until the top. And finally sits on a throne.
@fulltimeweirdos the things he "steps over" are phases of humanity and what the human race goes through and the throne symbolizes the final step and fall for man kind. :)
@TheBritishArmyClan im not overly sensitive about it. i love mogwai and it inspires me. is it a crime to be a bit imaginative from music? i didn't mean to come off as annoying or typical.
@erg0apollo Man, this is my thinking entirely! I envision a perfect soundtrack in an ideal movie. This would be one of those tunes. Great post, mate - good to know I'm not alone.
@erg0apollo you should get a video recorder and make that! it would be so cool as a video for this song! and it would add so much meaning to the song..though the song already has quite a lot of meaning anyway.. :)
I want to be an astronaut, thats the feeling i get when i listen to music like that - just floating through the space with my shuttle to the edge of the universe
Sad to see that everybody is still blaming each other for things that happened in the past, that in all likely they had nothing to do with. You go back far enough in history and nearly, if not all countries have blood on their hands. Maybe it's time to let it go.
Your wrong this is a song about rangers, this is a term about rangers fans and ranger club. but i will accept that celtic fans at times can be like rangers fans. but probaly with more just cause
I thought Mogwai couldn't do better than Happy Songs for Happy People. Then they came up with Mr. Beast. And then I thought they can't do better than Mr. Beast. Then they came up with the greatest of them all, Hawk is Howling, an album without a single piece of lyric!
Scotland's 'shame' is actually Ireland's shame. Rangers fans have nothing to be ashamed of. It is celtic fans who run around Scotland waving the flag of another country. A country who supported Hitler during the war and supported paedophile preists up to this day. Go back to Ireland.
@cleverfeller GTF... Absolute bollocks. We wave the flag of our ancestors who were forced to Scotland by British Imperialism, remember Scotland also has suffered at the hands of the English... Highland Clearances. The 'RA always gave sufficient warning before bombs, and you cannot definitively classify them as terrorists, personally I'd count them as freedom fighters. I'm sure you support the Brit Army, which, to me, is a terrorist organisation. Also Eire didn't support Hitler.
eire was strictly neutral during WW2, however did allow britain some port access & IFS support. ireland had just fought a bitter war of independence after centuries of invasion, oppression, disenfranchisement, property theft, slavery, passive genocide & the final blow - partition. de velera had been sentenced to death a few years previous by the british govt! thus, he stuck tediously to neutrality, but there was no active support for the nazis in govt. sorry to piss on your anti-irish tirade.
@monogirl3 It's funny how the British throw accusations about Irish collaboration with Germany but go all quiet when their own people were handing Jews over to the nazis in the Channel Islands. Or their beloved royal family's initial support of Hitler.
@CheRevolution76 Fuck you!!! I hate how you people judge the actions of one person from a nation and then claim the WHOLE nation is like that. I am Scottish, i HATE hitler and what he stood for, i HATE the royal family. BUT don't you dare tar us all with the same brush.
@Truetomyself100 And where did I say that? Am I not saying them same thing about mass generalisations? As a fellow Scot we are governed now by people that 95% of us did not want. After the Fuck you bit I'm not really sure I get your rant?!?

@BelgianBass shut the fuck up about nirvana! post rock and grunge are completly different but i like them both, obviously some people don't have eclectic taste.
@davegrohl2k98 i think foo fighters are getting better with age even though dave must have been distraught when kurt died. i think they probebly are fans of nirvana lol thanks for agreeing :)
@BelgianBass Hmmm I don't know about you dissin' grunge. I love post-rock and grunge. They're both real neat. I listen to grunge when I want to express my emotions in a more lively way and I'll hear post-rock when when I just want to relax. Personally I need both.
nirvana fucked up all the progres bands like metallica did for music in the late 80s, thats true......now mogwai have some good moments ,sparks now and then but you guys need to listen to alot more music these days, best band in 20 years ?, not even close
i like Mogwai, thats why i came here to listen to them but saying they are one of the best bands in the last 20 years is a bit absurd. Radiohead makes more sense but they still didn't have the impact that Nirvana did. Nirvana ended hair bands , you should have a little more respect for music other than the kind you like.
You have no argument that's why... love how i chackmated you with one comment!!... go listen to wet wet wet or something leave mogwai alone... not for your brand of human... i.e racist huns!!!... and a grotesque one at that
@fuckthehuns1 your very statment of "racist huns" in it's self is retarded as it is racist lol. Your name is racist unless you want to have sex with a family called the huns.
When there is a persecution due to race or descendency or religon it is racist/sect etc. If you cant get that go somewhere full of black ppl like africa and call them the "N" word and see what happens. or go to saudi and make fun of mohamhed. GAWD!!!!
A "Hun" is a nickname for a racist rangers fan... do you know what the word "sectarian" actually means? its about 2 different denominations of a religion who discriminate, and the last time i checked "Hun" wasnt a religion! so you're scraping the barrel and clutching at straws trying attach the word "hun" to racism and or sectarianism!.... so on your logic calling a Scotsman a "Jock" is racism?... stop insulting your own intelligence much less mines aswell
I come on here and it makes me cry. We can be all the same, we can all be friends, living and thriving. Building and rebuilding. Forgetting together. And yet we feel like we have to fight.

@BelgianBass Hmmm I don't know about you dissin' grunge. I love post-rock and grunge. They're both real neat. I listen to grunge when I want to express my emotions in a more lively way and I'll hear post-rock when when I just want to relax. Personally I need both.

nirvana fucked up all the progres bands like metallica did for music in the late 80s, thats true......now mogwai have some good moments ,sparks now and then but you guys need to listen to alot more music these days, best band in 20 years ?, not even close
felord 1 year ago

Nirvana?

Nirvana? who is that? ooooo, thats right, the band that ripped of Screaming Trees and such and sucked dick to make it famous. right
MrWobbleHead 1 year ago
i like Mogwai, thats why i came here to listen to them but saying they are one of the best bands in the last 20 years is a bit absurd. Radiohead makes more sense but they still didn't have the impact that Nirvana did. Nirvana ended hair bands , you should have a little more respect for music other than the kind you like.

i feel your vibe man, but clearly as you can see, i hate mainstream music. its garbage and I blame nirvana
MrWobbleHead 1 year ago
the mainstream music influenced by Nirvana was actually good music. Pearl Jam, Soundgarden etc. I agree the mainstream music now is mostly garbage.

What's not sectarian about it? Not getting involved in an argument with you, though. You grotesquely, disgusting cretin. Bye bye
Jibby1987 2 years ago
@Jibby1987
You have no argument that's why... love how i chackmated you with one comment!!... go listen to wet wet wet or something leave mogwai alone... not for your brand of human... i.e racist huns!!!... and a grotesque one at that
fuckthehuns1 2 years ago
@fuckthehuns1 your very statment of "racist huns" in it's self is retarded as it is racist lol. Your name is racist unless you want to have sex with a family called the huns.
When there is a persecution due to race or descendency or religon it is racist/sect etc. If you cant get that go somewhere full of black ppl like africa and call them the "N" word and see what happens. or go to saudi and make fun of mohamhed. GAWD!!!!
SuperGamerhell 2 years ago
@SuperGamerhell

All we need now is no language, just sound.
