  • when Holmes touches Violet's chin...I said to myself, "oh, I could have fainted in ecstasy !" hehe

  • Great Sherlock Holmes. Don't just watch his movies or episodes, try reading his books too.

  • @Amogh130997 Absolutely, The Doyle stories are essential and IMHO no TV or film adaptation can compare to reading and discovering them for yourself.

  • RIP Edward Hardwicke. died May, 2011.

  • ahah the competition between sherlock and watson to impress the girl is amusing XDD

  • Jeremy Brett did an excellent job as Holmes, but Basil Rathbone is still considered the definitive Holmes to this day. For most people it seems to come down to which one they saw first. To argue about it is a bit like arguing about whether Strawberries are better than Blackberries.

  • Thanks for sharing!

  • Best Holmes ever, know one can deny that. (If you do, you are an IDIOT)

  • Best Holmes ever, knowone can deny that. (If you do, you are an IDIOT)

  • Watson: "Slight ruffling on the sides of the soles, caused by the friction of the pedals."

Holmes: *Hey! That's my shtick, back off!* "Excellent Watson."

  • sherlock holmes and the solitary cyclist part 1

  • i wish i had had the opporttunity of having met this man

  • WATSON! (always the lady's-man)

    Love it.

  • I'll always remember "The Solitary Cyclist" foldly:

It was the first Sherlock Holmes adventure I ever read...and from that point on, I WAS HOOKED--I identified SO MUCH with Holmes, I couldnt' get enough of his adventures with his best friend Dr. Watson, the ver-kind Mrs. Hudson, and his competitor, Inspector Lestrade.

And I'm an English Major now...and I suppose I owe some of that to Holmes, Warson,a nd Sir Arthur Conan Doyle! (Oh, and to Jeremy Brett, for playing my hero PERFECTLY!)

  • ms.violet is beautiful indeed i would like to take her for a date

  • Jeremy Brett simply is outstanding. Can any one watch Sherlock Holmes and not like Jeremy Brett's performance ? I doubt it.

  • 还是话剧演员演电视连续剧好看。

    这是最好的福尔摩斯。

  • 4:07, yes mr.homes, i teach painting. -- the spirit of the face. --

  • the new sherlock movies are kind of better in a way but i don't know about the classic holmes...the books is really good, and watson in the new movie looked how i thought he would be

  • 6:33

    What is that dude's problem?

  • 100 pounds a year!

  • Jeremy is dashing in this episode

  • i never new they had old Sherlock Holmes episodes. this is nice, but i prefer the Benedict cumberbatch's Sherlock. he's fun to watch.

  • Watson learns! Holmes expression is priceless...

  • Gosh, Holmes is so pleased that Watson is learning is craft. His face was like YES. YES YES YES.

  • Although I personally prefer Vasily Livanov as Holmes and Vitaly Solomin as Watson,I have to say that Brett is AMAZING!But this Dr.Watson...he looks like an old walrus. He's not a Canon Watson imho.I love this series, but only because of Jeremy.

  • @GreenBaldrick I still think Basil Rathbone is the greatest Holmes ever--sorry I cannot appreciate Holmes in Russian; Dr. Watsons??? Have to think this over a bit.

  • @RPenta Oh,I like Basil, actually, but there are only two flawless Sherlocks for me: Vasily Livanov and Jeremy Brett. The most amazing and adorable Watson is Vitaly Solomin. And my favourite screen versions are Granada's and Lenfilm's.I think that these two versions are great pleasure to watch, especially for sherlockians.

  • Bloody hell, they don't half manhandle her, do they? :D

  • And another one bites the dust. Class act by Brett.

  • benedict cumberbatch, as BBC!Sherlock also says 'I never guess.' does that line show up in some canon story?

  • @allyndeimos

    The Sign of Four

Watson "Then how in the name of all that is wonderful did you get these facts?"

(Holmes has given Watson the entire family history of his own brother by looking at his late brothers pocket watch, Watson is astonished)

Holmes "Ah, that is good luck. I could only say what was the balance of probability. I did not expect to be so accurate"

W "But it was not mere guess-work?"

H "No no: I never guess. It is a shocking habit-destructive to the logical faculty"

  • @cha5 thanks!

  • brett looks so young and pretty in this one. i think i'm in loooove

  • @allyndeimos

Watch "An Ideal Husband" and you will fall madly in love. There he is young indeed!

  • @silverbud oh, i must. is it on youtube?

  • @allyndeimos

    Yes ma'am!

  • This and the man, Jeremy Brett, is truly amazing....

A true artisan for the Doyle legacy

  • Brett was very suitable on acting Sherlock Holmes,

  • I watch this mostly because theres captions. And these adds for the epic win. haha.

  • Gahhhhh! Jeremy Brett! Those huge blue-green eyes, tall and skinny figure, energetic and playful face, a voice that's both deep and light...He was such a beautiful person. I am 16 and in love with Brett. :) He and Downey Jr. (yes, he was a VERY good Holmes, so don't criticize unless you see the movie) are my favorite, although I think Brett was obviously the very best.

  • @UselessRambling

Seen the movie, therefore by your lights entitled to criticise, so: Didn't like RDJ, NOT a 'very' good Holmes,in fact not Holmes at all. Scruffy, American and short.

  • Comment removed

  • @UselessRambling Not clean shaven, not groomed all that much, and as instead of a bohemian with a love of art for art's sake RDJ took pleasure in being a slob for the sake of being a slob, as opposed to Doyle's character who Watson describes as having a "catlike love of personal cleanliness" and that's not mentioning bits like Holmes being handcuffed naked to a bed by Irene Adler, sorry but I'll take Brett, Cumberbatch, or even Rathbone, RDJ wore out his welcome for me halfway through the film.

  • @UselessRambling I'm afraid sir I must disagree. Holmes was not a hero. He was a thinker. The character portrayed by American cinema is somewhat akin to a problem solving mercenary, rather than a detective. I liked the movie but it was not Sherlock Holmes.

  • @Thr89ust Holmes was a hero of sorts. He's fits almost every criterion for the Byronic hero archetype.

  • love, love, love Brett!!!!!!!!!!! Oh what an actor, what a man!! Droling!!

  • Sherlock was all over those hands , lol

  • A great episode! and lovely to see the gorgeous John Castle too :)

  • シャーロックホームズは確か日本語版のが図書館にあったから借りてこようかなあ。

  • Holmes:This is NOT a convienent moment(lol)

Watson: Perhaps you could delay your chemical reaction?

  • Wow, this has got to be one of the very best episodes! I think Holmes rather liked this girl, eh?

  • @prolifeprincess He always appreciates integrity and Watson, the skirt! lol

  • @Songsmirth Hahaha! Yeah... :)

  • We forgot to write that this may be the best Watson also. He deeply respects Holmes beliving that he helps poor people and saves England. This Mrs. Hudson also cooks great food and admires Holmes to the point of being in love with him.

  • The actress who plays Violet is rather pretty.

  • I love when he says "I never guess" :)

  • And why do people bitch so much about spam? Ignore it, that's all.

  • Wow,Jeremy Brett is good as Sherlock Holmes. This is how I imagine Sherlock Holmes when I'm reading the book, not like the Holmes in the new movie tough I did like it. And I've read this story a while back but I don't remember how it ended. This is the first older version of Sherlock Holmes series I'm watching, tough I do remember seeing scenes of the black-and-white movies when I was younger (and a cartoonshow that was set in the future).

  • anyone knows where i can downkload this videos? please

  • That's not alot (100 pounds)

  • @MsTommyknocker In American money how much would that be?

  • 200 $

  • i cannot even begin to comprehend how anyone even thinks that Jeremy Brett isent the greatest holmes ever.... his rendition is flawless, he was Holmes, that says it all.

  • Jeremy Brett was flawless in this series. You know he's Sherlock Holmes from the moment he steps into frame. No one needs to announce it. If Mrs. Hudson never came up the stairs and into the room with a tray of food that Holmes will not eat, saying "Here's your supper, Mr. Holmes," you'd still know exactly who was sitting in that chair by the fire, playing the violin as he quietly figured out how to recover the jewels, or save the killer's next victim. Rest in peace good man.

  • @chainbluelightning1 It's like Conan Doyle based the character off of two people:

A doctor he knew who he wrote "you are Sherlock Holmes" and Mr. Brett.

  • wat is this the movie thats in the theater

  • this is so funny this one ! :L

  • Diggin' the *gasp*, Watson! XD

  • who is flickszilla

  • GOD why is there so much spam on all these episodes?

But Sherlock holmes is so perfect here! Just gorgeous. Love him, Jeremy Brett a wonderful actor.

  • man people just watch it in theaters instead of posting links

  • @ ChromeGhost:

I'm very sorry! I think I accidentally flagged your comment as spam - I meant to hit the 'Reply'. Ironically, to reply to your comment to the spam people.

I have been wondering - whether they are people at all, their comments seem to be machine generated. Also I noticed that when you flag them as spam, a new one seems to appear instantly as if they register when they're being removed... Pests they are to be sure whatever their nature.

  • with out a doubt

  • Holy spam batman! You shame Holmes with your spamming!

  • Youtube stop this spam!

  • Kill da spammers!, Kill da spammers!,

Kill da spammers!, Kill da spammers!

    Yahoa! Yahoa!

    Apologies to Elmer Fudd

  • Aren't they disgusting!!! All this spam has killed any small interest I had to see the film! Do they get paid for each post? I have spent the last two days marking each as spam, does you tube do any thing? They are ruining every comment page will this bs!

  • Amen Kristinesbluebird!

YouTube really needs to have some sort of policy about nonstop spam like this.

  • @kristinesbluebird

You are right. They are everywhere and it is disgusting. I bet they do get paid to do this. I hope YT is going to do something about it.

  • the new sherlock holmes is nothing like the old shelock holmes, it;s like they revised him like the bible to fit in with the new generation.

  • Greetings from New Orleans. The Solitary Cyclist is my favorite of all the Holmes stories! Stalking occurred in the Victorian Age as well as today.

  • "There is a spirituality about the face, however, which the typwriter does not generate; the lady is a musician"

One of my favorite Holmes quotations

  • Hey its Ms. Marple's Nephew!

  • just read this one last night

  • he's the genuine sherlock holmes...forever

  • Jeremy Brett is THE Sherlock Holmes, there is no doubt about it. I absolutely love all the episodes, his portrayal is just amazing...what a legend :D

  • @allaria8700 What about basil rathbone?

  • I'd say Jeremy Brett comes the closest to being Holmes as Conan Doyle imagined him, and so do the two actors who played Watson in the series. And Eric Porter's Moriarty brings the Professor to evil life. The whole series had very good actors.

  • "Miss Smiiiiiith" pause pause "I never gueesss." JUST BRILLIANT ACTING and he is so delicious too..

  • Yes, how could Miss Smith guess that he was guessing...!!! ;-)

  • EXCELLENT...BRILLIANT

  • What a great incarnation of my favorite book character of all times, mr. Sherlock Holmes, I love every single story, and I think this is the Sherlock Holmes I was searching for. :)

  • Brett is the quintessential Holmes. Brilliant and unsurpassed

  • 100 hundred % in agreement w/you! a truly magnificient man!

  • one of the best episode of sherlock holmes :)

  • Brett owned Sherlock Holmes

  • You will notice that altough Holmes is supposed to be unemotional, he is very sympathic to women in trouble, and if you are a rich and or arogant man, Holmes will chew you out or insult you as he did a German big shot and a businessman.

  • Love it when he says:

"I never guess!" ... great expression and composure!!

  • For God sake. Jeremy Brett is 1000x better than Basil Rathbone. Basil didn´t had energy and it wasn´t a convincing character. While Jeremy was all of that

  • Agreed. Bathbone was good, but his portrayal isn't as human as Brett's. In Rathbone, we see the 'classic' Holmes. But with Brett, we see Holmes the human being.

  • i think no one plays this role better than jeremy brett...he gives the character the personality we imagin when he read in the stories

  • My god, this was my favourite Sherlocks Holmes' film when I was littlel :O What a surprise see it here! I love these films, only when It's Jeremy Brett the mind character role :)

  • Please. anybody say me best from BRITAIN filmes about Sherlok Holmes? Becouse i dont like this film.

А то этот смотрится, как пародия - ШХ дерганный какой-то, хватает леди за руки, некстати бровями шевелит...

  • @dogaresse

Poprobuj hot eshe odnu seriju iz etogo seriala. Obichno, Brett po-moemu zamechatelno igraet, no eta serija ne ego samaja luchshe. A v Anglii, bolshinstvo ljudei schitajut chto on - samij pravilnyj Holmes, voobshe ne parodija.

Mozhet byt prosto nado privyknut... Konechno, eto - drugoj styl chem u russkogo Holmesa. No ja ih ljubju oboih. I luchshe anglijskih variantov po-moemu ne najti.

  • yes indeed...jeremy brett is THE sherlock holmes....

    thanks for putting this up!!!

  • "Perhaps you could, delay, your chemical reaction Holmes?"

    Ha ha. =D

  • Legendary, that doctor Watson. :)

  • XD lol

  • hehe. =P

  • Wov!! I´m from Argentina and while I have read every Sherlock Holmes book that I could get my hands upon, my favorite is the Sign of the Four, I never knew that there were so many movies about it! And I remember this story as one of the first I read

  • I like that Holmes is a little on the abrasive side...true to his literary character. Love it!

  • excellent!!! where is this from?

  • Marvelous beginning! I was hooked at once! :D

  • may be i am one of the biggest sherlock holmes fans.........

    5 stars

  • Count me in aswell! xD

5* would have given more of they where available =)

  • always love british accent

  • I simply adore the series. Thanks a lot for posting this.

  • Just got the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. Can't wait to watch it.

  • Fingers do get a flat portion from playing the piano. I know because it's happened to me and I play piano. nyaa.

  • Don't you still find this show entertaining even if some of the facts are a little off? I like it better that way because life has imperfections, so why shouldn't some of the plots? LOL

  • Just enjoy the show for what it is. It's fictional entertainment. It's part of his personality to say things lik that! I find it charming. Relax.

  • Well... Dose she strike you as a secretary of the Victorian era? She is as Mrs Hudson says "a real lady", she is earning pretty good money but dose not come from a rich family. A rich women used to wealth rides a coach not a bike.

She dresses nicer then a secretary and therefore isn't one.

That leads us to believe that she plays the piano rather then sitting in front of a typewriter.

  • 4:48 to 4:53. love it. Watson should know not to interupt the lady's story!!!

  • love this whole seeries but watson is just too much like a little lap dog in this one for me

  • heh. the good doctor beat Holmes to the punch on that one, and as the latter said, "Excellent, Watson." :D not a terribly difficult deduction, but well done all the same

  • This story is strikingly similar to The Copper Beaches.

A girl (also named Violet) accepts a job in a remote area from a seemingly nice (if a little creepy) man, for a job that pays double the money.

The only differences I see here are a well armed man on a bicycle, and a child that isn't the spawn of Satan.

  • Oh yes! I'd never noticed that before, knowing the stories (and series) pretty well.

  • I got the plots mixed up too! LOL You're absolutely right. I find both stories very enteraining though.

  • Yes. And as Sherlock says: Every crime has similarities with others!

  • Miss Smith, I never guess.
