As a child, I remember my father picking up a tape at a market and playing it in the car as we hit the Glenties on holiday.

In my twenties, I found the tape again, a bit the worse for wear but no less powerful. I just had to learn this song and to this day hold it dear.

You don't have to be a traveller to see greatness in that man, and may his family keep the tradition strong after we're all long gone.

Hey thanks for the awesome video my dad raised me listening to the pecker dunne , he's truly amazing . I spoke to his wife 2 octobers ago she's a very nice woman , he was in limerick regional at the time , hope he's doing well now :) he played in Dolla co, tipperary years ago and my dad met him , he had some great stories about the pecker but I"m sure many people do, my best wishes to the pecker and his family :)

pecker dunne is truly incredible. it's a pity his music isn't as available as margaret barry's (and i wish more of her was available too). does anyone here know how his banjo is tuned and what chords he is using? i'm a banjo player and i've already worked out a version in standard G but he seems to be playing in Bb, so i imagine he's using some form C tuning, tuned half a step down. can anyone shed some light on this? thanks.

on a typical zither banjo, the fifth string passes through a hole in the fingerboard to the tuning peg on the headstock, so the entire topside of the neck is flush with the headstock. despite being a 5-string instrument, the zither banjo was usually fitted with 6 tuning keys to give it a "symmetrical" look. the head is too small and the neck too narrow for a banjuitar, plus his fingering is clearly for a 5-string.
