I think you are referring to the water changing color to the purple/pinkish color. That is actually something called phenolphthalein which just showed the water becoming more basic when alkali metals are introduced to it...i am 90% sure that was it was doing...it has been a while. But i am 100% sure that was phenolphthalein.
