  • sounds like both James and Dave singing at the same time

  • yes this is young Herfield.

  • 0:50 that "he!" is so, so, so, soooo hetfield...

  • James' impression of Deadly Tedly! Sounds more fun than the cut on Kill Em All...

  • If it's really Hetfield his way of vocal is quite unusual!!

  • Hetfield on the voice . No Doupt but i think i also ear Mustain on some Harmonic voice

  • god this is a better take than the first one. But the album is a billion times better. James is actually singing! Something he didn't do till the black album!

  • i think james and dave are singing daves voice really shines thorugh on this track if you listen close but then again i guess you wouldn't know unless you were truly there during the recording nonetheless this kicks asss thanks for the upload!

  • good thing he quit imitating diamond head's singer...:D

  • dude this kicks ass! dave mustaine on lead guitar! \m/

  • Cliff Burton was obviously a welcome addition. This Ron is clearly substandard.

  • At the time JAMES was really into DIAMONDHEAD

  • dave did sing on unreleased demos but tjose were never meant to be released...THIS IS JAMES.....way beofre he found his own style and was tring to emulate the BRITISH THRASH that he was into..right before he was all into MOTORHEAD (as can be heard on KILL EM ALL) you can always tell what JAMES is into at the time by his singing

  • Metallica was not the only good band on this Compilation. Cirith Ungol , Malice, Black N Blue, and Bitch were great as well.

  • Nice take for something better!

  • No insult, this so funny. I love 'em. Aren't they supposed to be a rock'n'roll band?

  • i love 80s metal!!!!!!!1

  • it doesnt matter ,metallica and megadeth still rule the free world of metal!!!!rock the fuck on both yall, dont you people realize that good hard rock like this and sabbath are fading and we gotta fight to keep it alive , and bands like nickelback are killing us? Slayer help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • DAVE MUSTAINE!!!

  • @SlatanicWhermacht95 never sang for metallica and sucks!!!!

  • @mrksrdeth666 Stop being such a fanboy and fuck yourself.

  • @mrksrdeth666 you fuckin suck

  • @mrksrdeth666

    Die.

  • @mrksrdeth666 FUCK YOU!! BACKSTREET BOY!!

  • i dont like this version, the other one is better

  • I think Mustaine is doing backup vocals here (0:47 is a good example), but it's clearly Hetfield with lead vocals.

  • Its Lloyd and Dave, James is just singing.

  • Comment removed

  • it sounds like axl rose or robert plant is singing it a different times

  • its grant dumb fuck !

2nd pressing released in 84 asshole

  • Can hear King Diamond's influence in the vocals.

  • This is the first recording they ever did!

  • @grantytyta no, its the second

  • I do believe that Mustaine is in fact lead guitar on this particular demo, however, the first solo is Lloyd Grant. Mustaine plays all the other solos on the song but during the recording, Lloyd Grant's take on the first solo was so good that they decided to leave it in .. If this is the demo I'm refering to that is ..

  • this compilation was made before lars and james met dave. they used a guitar player by the name of Lloyd Grant because they needed a lead guitar player FAST or else they wouldn't be on the compilation.

  • There are two versions, on the first Dave only played one solo on the second, this one, he played all the solos.

  • correct. Lloyd played a second solo, being that there was no vocals on another section in the song, so they had him churn one out quickly. thanks for the correction.

  • wrong. the first time they recorded it dave wasn't in the band.

  • I meant the demo tape, not this song.

  • you indeed can hear it's james singing!

  • if it would have been for Lars they would have been called thunderfuck:) MetallicA rules!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • intro is way better than in album

  • you can tell when they were younger they played faster and had higher voices,

because they were kids they played differntly as they got older they changed from that

  • Love the singing! Great stuff. To bad James can't sing like this anymore.

  • wait i thot that that lloyd grant was the guitarist

  • About 19 years old or maybe even younger :)

  • when first metallica was created, 1980, they was 18 yrs old...

  • 1981...

  • no, metal mania was magazine. that's how metallica name came out, when someone (don't remember who) asked from lars what would be better name for magazine, metal mania or metallica, and lars sayed metal mania, cause he wanted "metallica" to be band's name. and metallica was created in 1981

  • metallica was created in 1981 in 1980 lars wasn in america he was coming on a boat

  • how old where they when they made this?

  • Wikipedia is not a fully trustable source dude...

Good that some of you hear them both as it is

    The song concept remains Mustaines!

  • how is it mustaines? if they Ron nd James wrote this song in Leather Charm b4 they even met Mustaine?

  • That's the same track than in the No life til leather demo...

  • is that dave on lead. yeh right?

  • yeah dave is on lead

  • lead guitar, second voice

  • this was released in 84 not 82 the first pressing was in 82

  • teh song is better with lloyd grant

  • this one is with mustiane the first metal massacre was with lloyd

  • It's hetfield. i used to think the same thing too, but really , it's james. Just do some homework. Wikipedia makes it easy.

  • Sounds like James was trying to imitate King Diamond. Listen to the way he holds his notes lol.

  • sounds like Dave Mustaine too me lol

  • James is the lead vocalist, Dave is the second voice

  • the vocals sounds a little like ted nugent:)

    really cool

  • almost inedit!!

  • this version is more vocal, I love this than the final version on the CD !!! what do you think ?

  • Better than the first version, except Mustaine blows on his one

  • this is with loyed grant

  • No, this is the second version of the song from the "No Life 'till Leather" demo, which they used on the reissue of Metal Massacre.

The FIRST version on the ORIGINAL pressing of this album is the one with Lloyd Grant.

  • wow, i'm amazed how corny mustaine's guitar sounds with that distortion. lloyd grant had a better sound in the first take for metal massacre, but the melody mustaine plays in this one is way better.

  • This is the best Metallica, for me.

    \,,/

  • great song!!!!! for me this is better than the version on KILL ´EM ALL,it sounds pretty cool to me...!

  • Mustaine never sang in Metallica period.

  • Sure he sang, got a whole concert from 83 where he's taking the front vocals

  • or both of them in some parts

  • It's true, Mustaine NEVER sang for metallica. Sure, he did alot of talking on the mic. This is no doubt Hetfield on vocals here. It just sounds like they had more than one vocal track.

  • wtf r u talking about dave mustaine was a part of kill em all as much as james and the rest??

  • Comment removed

  • @da2427 dont want to be a douche or anything but i did find one cover song where he did sing but thats it

  • it´s hetfield.... TRUST ME!

  • Wrong, James just sounded REALLY different back then.

  • But its Mustaines kind of frasing ? if you cant tell the different between those two then.......

  • This is the version I remember. It's pretty cool. Of course the version that appears on Kill 'em all is the best but this is cool because it's so raw.

  • old skool!

  • Well, it's certainly better than the first recording of the song they made for Metal Massacre, but it lacks a bit of the original's garage dirt charm.

  • Back when Metallica was AWESOME.

  • wow thats crazy but old and good!

  • this might sound a bit crazy but do the vocals sound just a bit like Robert Plant. Just a thought

  • LOL, Holy shit, it does just a bit, doesn't it!?

  • Thats Het's Sean Harris impression.

  • ooo man!!! i cant belive this is james... awesome

  • i think is dave n james on vocals!

  • I fucking hate 13 year old Metallica fans who can't spell worth a shit because they have to type all fuckin 1337 and stuff...

I FUKING HAET 13 Y EAR OLD METALICA HU CANT SPEEL WORHT A SHIT BE CAUSE TEHY HAV E TO TIPE ALL FUKIN 1337 ND STUF!!!111oneeleven!11!1!!!!

  • BTW I Fucking Love Metallica. It's just alot of the fans today are such Noobs...

  • You can certainly hear the DiamondHead influence with this! Awesome vintage Metallica.

  • can someone give me a reason why lars sucks? ive seen so many people say that and i would like to understand

  • He Got Old, In the early days, bands freely distrubuted their bands demo to gain exposure. In modern times, Napster saw a more convenient method way of distributing music. However, Lars is making too much money to let his bands music go for free. Hence, lawsuit against Napster. Like Satan kicked out of Heaven, Lars image took 1/3 of the band's fans down with him. In my opinion, he jumped the gun. Metallica is a business now, not a thrash band. Should have negotiated with Napster; Image intact.

  • yeah but that doesnt have anything to do with his playing

  • Attention: Ignorant dumbass alert. Choice of action: Try to correct to him.

First off, I like how you retards say "LOL LARS IS WRONG BECUZ HE SUE NAPSTAR!!11!!!!".

Let's see - piracy is against the law, and you're defending it? Wow, you're so fucking awesome.

Two, you make hard music (that phsycially hurts to play after awhile) and have some fuckfaces download it like "LOL HEY I COULD PEY 4 IT BUT I BIGGEST FAN EVER I DUN HAV 2!!11!!!".

    Correct done.

  • true, lars had every right to sue napster.

  • I'm surprised it was ONLY Lars that sued Napster - the rest of the band had little-to-no involvement.

  • @DevilSpree: you are a fuck head. dont embarrass youself like that again because i felt ridiculous by just reading your "informitive" 'know fuck all' comment, you halfwit. Learn how to spell before you think you can critisise others you fuckin' tool. Too many wankers like you exist and put dumb comments up like this, and it gives me the shits. Go make a dick of yourself elsewhere you moron, and save the rest of us from your humiliation because it's pathetic.

  • @billymgee B'awwww they aren't letting me steal so I'm going to whine like a bitch b'awwwww"

You're an idiot, plain and simple.

  • @billymgee YOU BLOODY WANKER YOU IS

  • @billymgee

    It's criticize retard.

He easily has better spelling. Don't be mad that all you can do with your brain is tie your shoes, sometimes.

  • @DevilSpree FUCKING TR00 BRO, FUCKING TR00

  • No, all music is a buisness.

He had every right to sue Napster.

Im almost positive you would do the same

  • Getting old doesn't mean getting bad.

  • What a solo!!! this nigger lloyd know how to play the fucking guitar!!!!!!1

  • Yeah but you dont have to be a racist

  • body I'm Black and i play thrash metal too..that's why I'm very proud of him and I'm saying this..I'm not racist

  • You don't see a lot of black people playing heavy music, but when the do, they really make it something special. Derrick Green of Sepultura is one of the greatest shouters out there, and Living Colour are one of my favourite bands of all time.

  • Yeah. that's true.

  • yeah but modern sepultura sucks because they they cant call them sepultura without the cavalera's brothers

  • Obviuosly they can.

  • Eh, their are some talented black heavy metal players. But i havent really seen them do something special besides Sepultara

  • Actually if this is the 2nd pressing, Dave Mustaine did these solos. Lloyd did the solos on the first version.

  • Yeah.. You are right Dave is making this solos... I forget to read the information of the video that said "second recording of Hit The Lights" Thanks for correcting me I can see that you are a really fan just like me... METALLICA WILL LIVE FOREVER!!!!

  • on the very first demo Lloyd is playing the solo, James is doing vocals AND BASS GITAR, and Lars Ulrich is playing drums...

I think their other demos for hit the lights is with dave mustaine and ron mcgovney

  • In early 1982, Metallica recorded its first original song "Hit the Lights" for the Metal Massacre I compilation. Hetfield played bass on the song and Lloyd Grant was credited with a guitar solo.

thats from wiki ron wasent even in the band at that point, metallica had never even played live when they realesed this

  • neither was dave mustaine i don't think

  • The very first Hit the Lights was recorded in Ron McGovney's garage, but he didn't play with them. Previously Ron played with James and other guys in the same garage as an amateur band called Leather Charm, but once Metallica was created in October 1981 Ron refused to join the band cause he didn't like Lars, but he still allowed them to play in his garage. Finally James convinced Ron to join the band, but the very first metal Massacre was recorded with James at bass.

  • Nobody likes Lars lmao.

  • Guess why, cause he sucks lol

  • hahahahah so true

  • do you know what happend to llyod grant ? i mean why did he leave ?

  • he still hangs with metallica he was never a proper member he just helped em out with this demo untill they found a guitarist

  • GUYS, I NEED TO KNOW WHAT IS Metal Massacre???

  • its a compilation of early metal bands trying to make it big.....

  • THATS JAMES,?!

  • the original is recorded only by Lars and James!!!!!james played bass and guitar and lars played drumms!!!!!

  • actually the original recording was james lloyd and lars.....then ron came and then dave....

  • dose kirk copy daves solo for this??

  • i believe krik copys every original song played with dave whic would be like 3/4 of the kill'em all

  • Comment removed

  • I wouldn't mind if this would've been the version on Kill 'Em All. You can definitely hear Diamond Head's influence on James at the time.

  • Oh man, yeah. It's basically an imitation of Diamond Head's singer. I think it's good James just let loose and screamed his fucking head off instead. Now people are imitating HIM.

  • hey mate it's not dave it's lloyd grant he =) all the best

  • This title is incorrect. This isn't their first recording ever. Metallica's first ever recording was of Hit the Lights with Lloyd Grant on lead guitar, before they got Dave Mustaine.

  • I know, but I'm lazy. Read the description. It's not there just for fun, you know...

  • They were still a metal band here. After justice they went pop.

  • I don't really see how can can classify them as "pop". Their songs weren't exactly radio friendly. St. Anger, thought not very good, certainly wasn't pop. I wouldn't even classify Load/Re-Load as pop. More like hard rock.

And finally, Death Magnetic is definitely metal.

  • went pop dude u gotta be kidding me

    LMFAO

u r a dumb mother fucker metallica never went pop

omg that was the stupid fucking comment i seen on you tube so far

  • dame god this is sooo old this is before cliff and kirk not to make fun of them im a BIG fan of metallica but james sounds like hes only like 13 or 12 but hes acually 18 or 17 not 19 yet thoe in this one but still it still sounds awsome but everything metallica makes sounds awsome

  • and for stupid "voice".. It is James, his biggest influence was King Diamond, so it kinda explains why its so high pitched.

  • No, its on wikipedia that Dave never sang ever when in Metallica. Even said himself in Megadeth documentry thats kicking around on here.

  • the combination of james and dave is pretty good... despite the fact that dave was an alcoholic, junkie, and sucked at lead guitar (he is and was an incredible rythmist tho)

  • This version sounds so much more professional than the recording on the original pressing of Metal Massacre.

  • it's both james AND dave singing, now that that's settled, who wants beer?

  • is this james or dave who sings?

  • "This is the second recording of Hit The Lights ever, because the first recording for Metal Massacre kinda sucked!(haven't heard it tho)"

dumb ass, if its not the first recording then why would you put that in the title for?? also how do you know if it sucks if you never even heard it?? wtf..

  • is this james ? it donts sound like himlol

  • well that explains it all the stupid vioce lol

  • No it's not.

  • both are good but i like more mustaine cuz he kicks james ass

  • Well, can't take your opinion away from you. But I defenetly like James more. But we can at least agree about that metal kicks maximum ass!

  • its not mustaine he never sang for metallica, its james in his early days...

  • not to be an ass , but this is the no life til leather version , the metal massacre one was 10 times shitier , these are definitely daves solos , yeah

  • Acctually, this is the 2nd metal massacre version. They have like 4 different demos of this song that sound exactly the same.

  • LLoyd grant wasnt a member of metallica. on the way 2 record this track james and lars wanted another solo for the song and james asked his friend lloyd to record it. thats the extent of his history in metallica. not a real member though.

  • hey fucking dumb cunt noob cock sucker dave haven join the band yet the line up is. James Hetfield Lars Ulrich Ron Mc Lloyd ron was original bassist lloyd was the ORIGINAL lead guitarist he played in this METAL M hit the lights. Its james voice study more about metallica before commenting dumb
  • lloyd just played on this as a session player, he was never IN the band

  • your not IN the band, lol. of school of rock, i love this song, =]

  • hm. maybe im wrong, and thanks for correcting me but... i suggest you consult your doctor...you have serious humor issues, beware of the hemorrhoids.

  • well it wasnt humorous at all.

btw nicholasbang: Lloyd played the First MM record of Hit the lights. It is in the info of the video that its the SECOND record. kkthxbai

  • well i meant "mood". english is not my natural language.

  • Lloyd Grant was never a member of Metallica. He just played with them in a couple of sessions. Mustaine was the first lead guitarist for Metallica. End of story.

study more about metallica before commenting dumb

  • Haha and yeah this is James trying to imitate Diamond Head's singer.

  • yeaph he wasn't really a member , and lloyd had a GREAT band called defcon after metallica...
