  • I love these classic shows. I love watching the actresses writing there names and the crowd hooting.

  • and she's still going strong at 90-PLUS!

  • I love her!!!!

  • God, I am getting old, I used to watch this show when I was a kid!!

  • She is a cousin of Israeli President Shimon Peres - their real last name is Persky.

  • Love those swinging sixties fashions. Makes Lauren look like a school girl.

  • Lauren has the best Eyes.

  • Love when Bennett calls her Betty.

  • Love when Bennet calls her Betty.

  • So beautiful in the 40's and here as well.

  • What a great host John Daly was....class act

  • It's never much fun when there's more than the one guest panelist. You need all three of Cerf, Kilgallen and Arlene Francis.

  • When television programs were classy and fun to watch!

  • Charlotte Rampling kinda looks like her, both are beautiful women :)

  • She is RIDICULOUSLY hot. She still is.

  • Wow, those eyes could melt Tungsten.

  • She's a freak she's so gorgeous. What an amazing woman, such style, such grace.

  • I love that Lauren was born a poor Jew who grew up dirt poor and grew up to be the epitome of cold, cool class that so many women tried to copy. You go Ms. Bacall.

  • i did not know she was in the original cactus flower!!

too bad those performances are lost forever. as for Miss Bacall, I wish she could have won a competitive oscar.

  • She had a lot of personal rough times but still managed to keep her head held high. Her first husband dying from cancer (Humphrey Bogart), her fiance (Frank Sinatra) publicly breaking off their engagement and an alcoholic 2nd husband (Jason Robards). But she always maintained her dignity.

  • idk much about her other than the name, but now i must see a flim with her in it.

  • I love her so much! Her cool elegance and sarcasm in "How to marry a millionaire" was awesome.

  • she's one of the few remaining stars from this classy period!

  • I JUST LOVE MS BACALL SUCH A GRACIOUS WARM LADY!!!!!!!!! AND EVEN IN HER LATE 80'S WHAT A FULL LONG LIFE SHE MUST HAVE LIVED!!!!

  • What a voice - fits perfectly to such an intelligent woman.

  • Ms Newman is lovely here--does anyone remember Durward Kirby's "Carl Sandbag" skit on the Garry Moore show?

  • Lauren Bacall (born as Betty Joan Perske) may well be considered an acronym for TALENT, ELEGANCE and DISTINCTION! She one of the most charming leading ladies from cinema. I simply looooooove her voice. As curiosity it's interesting to say she's cousin of Shimon Peres, the President of Israel. A small world, huh? LOL :)

    God Bless her!

  • Man, they really dressed up back then. Did the women dress like that each week??

How could they afford it? Glamour Glamour Glamour

  • Notice in the 60's the blindfolds changed,, probably because of the big hair do

  • Lauren's voice is unique and that stupid biaatch was being really rude dissing it :(

  • Her whisper is very husky, and cute.

  • You just FEEL BETTER when you watch these clips : they're so pretty and charming

and handsome and debonair......Love these posts !

  • and after the show i bet they all went out for a vodka!

  • Here's why Phyllis Newman asked if she was a French sex symbol. She knew people came on to plug movies, and a movie opened just the day before (12-18-65) called "Viva Maria!" which starred Brigitte Bardot and Jeanne Moreau. You don't get more French sex symbolic than that.

  • Phyllis Newman's hairdo could destroy a ceiling fan. (Glad *those* fashion days are over -- hopefully never to return ...)

  • Perhaps, Bacall is my favourite actress. Love her in "The Big Sleep" and "To Have and Have Not."

  • Phyllis kind of bothers me. I love Ms. Bacall tho!

  • i see bennett was a fan of that was the week that was. i wonder if he liked tom lehrer

  • Lauren Bacall was, is, and will always be the best <3 !!!

  • I so wish I could have seen Bacall in Cactus Flower...the one thing that sucks about Broadway is that they didn't tape any of the early shows...

  • I adoore Lauren Bacall.

  • Smart that she was whispering, her deep voice voice would have given her away from the very first response...she tried!

  • On Rocky & Bullwinkle there was a hat called the Kirwood Derby.

  • Arlene looks beautiful in that dress!! i just love the introduction sequences! i wish more were on here. And Lauren Bacall is lovely, as usual!

  • "- Are you a French Sex Symbol?

    (astonished face)

    - (whispering) No."

    LOL

  • Apparently Bennett did not want to be first all the time to introduce the possible replacements of Dorothy Kilgallen.

So in early 1966, Tony Randall or Steve Allen [or Martin Gabel?] sat first followed by Arlene Francis who then introduced the guest female panelist trying out, then Bennett Cerf.

  • Phyllis Newman's ensemble is marvelous, & her bright-eyed spirit a constant even as she wasn't a permanent panelist! This show is awesome; I've never seen it before & am watching all these old clips. Thanks for posting!

  • it always seemed like durwood was lost unless he was standing next to gary moore or carol burnett. one trick pony.

phyllis once got balled out by the producers for dressing mod instead of formal chic. maybe that put her in the doghouse.

  • when she was 19 and doing films like to have and have not or the big sleep or whatever, she had alluring bedroom eyes. as she got older, she looked like she spent a lot of time drinking bogie under the table. but, she was still a very good actress even into the 1980's or so.

  • @torchkit correction. maybe the yiddishe maydels don't age so well- although my sisters would argue with you.

  • @torchkit anti semite

  • @bigred997 I thought Lauren always remained very pretty. I never heard that Jews don't age well.

  • you are replying to the wrong person. (see torchkit)

  • For another YouTube clip that features a WML introduction sequence in which Arlene sits in the fourth seat to introduce John Daly refer to

    What's My Line? - 5 Feb 1961 - Mystery Guest Dorothy Kilgallen - Part 1 Prelude

  • This broadcast comes a month and a week after Dorothy's death in November 1965.

Phyllis Newman returns to WML for the first time since she substituted for Arlene. Apparently the producers considered hiring her to replace for Dorothy but for whatever reason, she appeared as a frequent guest panelist, not a permanent panelist.

  • In early 1963 when Dorothy Kilgallen was hospitalized for substance abuse problems, Phyllis Newman substituted for her during her entire absence. This leads me to speculate that the producers were grooming her to take over that year if Dorothy was unable to return. Dorothy did return, and only once that I can remember did Dorothy and Phyllis appear on the same broadcast: that was in late spring 1963 when Phyllis subbed for Arlene who was recovering from an auto accident.
