  • I always smile at people I pass them in the street and one time this really cute old man stopped me and told me I had a beautiful smile :) that made my day!

  • I try and be as kind as I can to people, so they feel guilty for being mean to me :D

  • I really love the 'recommended video' idea. I wish more youtubers did that.

  • Comment removed

  • have you read - "The precious human life"? it says........

  • This would require talking to people so I'm against it.

  • @PhredofMars No it doesn't. All it takes is smiling at someone or holding a door open.

  • The end screen OMG!!

  • I do try to make this kind of effort, and it is a lot harder than it sounds, but totally worth it.

I also made some New Year's Resolutions this year, but they are all important/ achievable (things like 'get a driver's license' and 'do a really good Halloween costume'. None of them are too vague to achieve.

  • I feel like you would really like this movie called "I Am." They brought up some points related to this video that you would probably enjoy. I watched it last night and found it pretty inspiring

  • I can be a good person, people just annoy me.

  • Just wanted to say that I really enjoy your videos and love this concept. its one i really think i, and anyone else should embrace. :)

  • That end screen was boss!

  • nice background at the end there :] I look forward to more videos with this new-ish outlook.

  • @TheSkinnyBrit it was a joke.

  • I don't usually do new years resolutions either, but this year I really want to read at least 40 novels, because last year I kind of stopped reading for enjoyment and that's sad because it used to be something I really enjoyed. So far I've been doing good, I've already read 4. :) I'm totally going to do this being nice thing, even though I've always tried to do that. :D

  • YOUR ENDSCREEN MUSIC. So. Beautiful.

Also I really like this idea a lot. People being nice is something that's important to me. So I want to try to be nicer this year as well. Thanks for this video. :)

  • this vid reminded me of when my 8th grade teacher showed us "pay it forward"...watch it, its really good

  • I notice myself being mean far too often nowadays. Maybe that's just because I'm more aware of what I'm saying/doing. I'd like to work on that, as well as be a little bit nicer to myself. (Because you know what? I'm actually fucking awesome.)

  • @xlivelovelaughxxx That's the spirit! You are fucking awesome!

  • My goal is to read at least 5 books every month :) so far so good. I'm on book 4 of this month so I think this resolution was a bit too easy haha

  • U look soooooo weird in the thumb nail

  • i want to finnish writing my book and try and do something that counts on the computer and not sit and watch youtube all day!!!

  • I have always tried to make people feel better and smile or tell them I like their outfit! I've been doing that since one time I felt that I didn't look all that nice and someone just came up to me held the door open and said they liked my shoes :D It just makes people feel better

  • I am working on being away from my family for the first time. I am over here in Lancaster, England, and it's hard not to be able to talk to my loved ones whenever I want. Add that to being in a new place (and a new country for the first time) and figuring out a new University. So my goal is just to try to make the most of it and still go out and have fun though I may not feel like it.

  • For my new years resolution... thinggy... Me and my friend (who can be found on youtube and her channel is thoughtumentary) are writing every day for 2012. That's 366 days. we have a blog. It can be found on my channel under links

  • I want to learn how to play guitar well.

  • I love this idea! I've been trying to do this myself too, I will try even more now!

  • I just noticed your nose is wonky. ^.^

  • @OneWwomanShow ...thanks

  • @owlssayhooot But in an incredibly cute way

  • I always try to be nice, but the world seems to always kick me in the nuts in return :(

  • I always try to be nice to strangers. Not only makes it them feel better, it makes you feel better too. I went to a Christmas market with my friend and there was a small ferris wheel that we watched for a while. It was empty the entire time, people walked past without looking up and the owner, an old man, looked really sad and grumpy. We decided to go on it, he took our photo afterwards and he seemed so happy when we wished him and his wife a Merry Christmas afterwards. It's the little things :)

  • "Like humans more...?" This is... good yet oddly worded. If worded is a word.

  • @remedywithin Worded is a word.

  • I always hate when I'm trying to say hi to someone walking by, but they never make eye contact with me. Just because I have headphones in, doesn't mean I'm going to completely ignore you.

  • Hey Kayley. I'd recommend, if you have the time, reading Daniel Goleman's "Emotional Intelligence". Mainly because in the introduction he tells a story specifically related to what you're talking about in this video. Greetings from Nottingham (what most londoners will refer to as "the north", though being icelandic its far from it to me ...)

  • Can you tell us youre best tips abaout liveing in London? :D Im mooving there in 6-8 months

  • My new years resolution is to get my application to Art School FINISHED and uploaded etc by 31st of January. It's a small one,but a vital one.

  • I usually try to make eye contact with strangers walking by and smile, but I find their determination not to look at me a little intimidating. So I end up doing a silly-looking thing with my head, raising it every other step to check if they're looking at me, and then smile if they are XD

  • This month I'm taking part in the new year revolution which is a project made by channel four in the UK to get people to try and do new things everyday...one of the days was to give at least 5 people, 2 of which you didn't know a genuine compliment and another day was to help out or give something you like such a book by your favourite author to someone which I thought actually links really well with this video :D

  • This year, I'm gonna try to get out of my anti-social rut that I keep falling into. And make more videos with effort of editing them.

  • This year I want to send more letters. Snail mail is something everyone can enjoy.

Also, when I think a compliment about someone, I want to make sure I tell them. I may not remember that I told some girl I like her sweater, but I bet she will remember it.

  • new years resolution: smile and say hello to people more

2012 project: a little video series following the journey of an origami paper boat

  • Videos like these remind me why I subscribe to you.

  • I have a lot of projects that I'm working on as well - most of them youtube video ideas! I really hope they go well.

  • I always do this. :)

  • I'm making a Project for Awesome inspired video once a month for the entire year so that charities can be recognized all year round.

  • funny because this was my new years resolution. glad to see im not alone :)

  • i like always do that.

  • This is a really lovely idea.

It reminds me of the film Pay it Forward.

  • I think people would be more freaked out if I made more eye contact at them and smiled

  • "I think everyone should like humans more."

How much better could we all took that to heart?

Also, Willy must be the unfortunate orca EVER if he needs to be freed THAT many times...

  • I do stuff like that all the time, holding doors open and stuff. I really hate it when people don't acknowledge you or say thank you and stuff.

  • challenge accepted :)

  • have you had your hair dip dyed? It looks lovely.

  • @itssarahemily Nope! But thanks.

  • Most people scare me

  • @bruinreuben Well, don't interact with the scary ones.

  • LOVE your new endscreen!! (and the music! I think I recognize it... ;D)

  • This is a really good idea. There have been times when a stranger complements my shirt or somthing after Ive been having a bad day and it just lifts my spirits a great bunch.

  • My friends always say i'm this grumpy person, but i'm like the only person that holds doors open for people, or picks things up that people have dropped or wiped somebodies face after they've been crying after being screamed at by the biggest scariest teacher in school(etc) And it still kind of annoys me how people are always surprised when i do these things. Is it because of the way I look I don't know, but i find myself being the only person around school doing these things. love this concept.

  • "It's just being nice"

your facial expression reminded me so much of alex.

  • your hair is looking extra great (and i'm not just saying this because of the kindness thing even though i do mean to be kind)

but yes, this is a good idea!

  • You are the anti-Katniss

  • @NarglesMischief I don't think Katniss was against being nice. She just had more pressing matters.

  • They're making another Free Willy film?!?! Awesome.

  • Kayley, I think you would love to learn about/do Rachel's Challenge. look it up it's similar to this thingy

  • I need to make a "Plight of Kindness" badge... now!

  • Oooooh and I loooove your new design and end screen :)

  • I'm doing this too!

Oh, and a couple of my friends and I have started this thing where each day, we all have to write down three things that were good that day. Kinda like "Why today is awesome".

  • I love the new end screen <3

  • :)

  • I actually borrowed an idea from one of your old videos, everyday day I have been writing a couple of lines about why that day was awesome, and so far it's been really easy, I've had loads of lovely things to say so far about 2012.

  • Nice hair.

  • awesome new outro! i use that Bilbo script in my handwriting and calligraphy.

  • Glad to hear you're into being nice! I really recommend The Art of Happiness by The Dalai Lama and Howard C. Cutler (if you haven't read it already) for some great ideas about being nice and being happy - the Dalai Lama reckons you can make you're own day as well as that of others by being that much nicer, and I find this to be overwhelmingly true :)

  • I work at McDonald's and sometimes it's so hard to be nice, but I figure that people need a little pick me up sometimes, so I try to be nice even when I want to hate everyone.

  • fully agree - more smiling, and politeness makes EVERYONE feel better! I'm on board! x

  • Why did people dislike this? DOING IT WRONG.

  • I've already resolved to do this even more so this is perfect :)

  • Project: Stop being a shit human being.

  • I'm doing it!!!

  • (continued from previous comment..) I think this group is great and might be something you'd be interested in. If you are you can sign up to get an email once a week with a mission in it. There is never any spam and it's run by really lovely people, it's really inspirational. Obviously you don't have to I just thought it might be something you'd be interested in. Thanks for a great video!

  • This video is really great, it reminds me of a group called ItStartsWith.Us which I joined fairly recently who are trying to make the world better by doing a "mission" every week. For example this week's is to donate something you don't use. Past missions have included: tell someone they're beautiful, write a letter to someone who is special to you, reconnect with someone you've lost touch with. (not enough characters to finish my explanation...)

  • Very "Pay It Forward"-esque

  • I already kind of try to. Like if I'm walking out a door and someone's behind me, I'll hold it open to them and just kind of smile at them. Even if I'm having a completely awful day I just can't let the door go, I'll like gently pass it off, making sure the person has it because I've gotten hit by doors it brings down your mood just so much.

But this is a really nice movement and I think I'll, also, be trying to be nicer when I can. :)

  • I have my headphones in usually but I always smile to strangers. Not many of them smile back though, a lot of them see me and just give me a weird look. But I am going to keep smiling.

  • This year I want to read more, go on holiday and finish watching all of the tv series I've started :) (Sopranos, Battlestar Galactica and Twin Peaks are my main priorities.)

  • Yeah this won't work in Britain, far too down to Earth, at least where I live anyway...

  • I don't really like people, but I consider myself to be above average polite to strangers, and then sometimes awfully sarcastic to my friends. I'm weird.

  • I've set 2 goals for this year: read more and move to New York!

  • Good. Yes.

I've decided to take a break from big all-encompassing projects this year! So this seems like an easier little project to take on. Deal.

  • Your face is shaped in a very attractive way, and that's how I start my Plight of Kindness

  • We all need a reminder at times! Stay Classy.

  • you looked very pretty in this video.

  • I do exactly the same. I've always got my head held high smiling at people, holding the door open for people, saying hello, etc. Not only does it make me feel good it makes them feel good too.

My plan for 2012 is put much more effort into my YouTube channel. Make my editing & commentaries as better as I can make them. Not only that will like & favourite a lot more videos. I have a tendancy to watch a video from start to finish then click off. I need to like a favourite my subscribers videos.

  • great thought ;) I'm in.

  • i also try to do this all the time - don't always succeed but i know how happy it can make you when some smiles at you :)

  • I'm in! :D

  • I moved to London a few months ago and it's been really mind boggling to me that I see hundreds of people everyday and no one looks at or interacts with each other. I've tried to make a point of breaking that too. A smile never hurts :)

  • I will do this! *smile of creepy loveliness*

  • I don't make resolutions. I make goals. My goals this year is to write 500 words per day on some kind of fiction. Spend at least 10 minutes each day in the garden. make 3 youtube videos every week. This should be a fun year.

  • This is very much like a thing that me and my friend invented called the Love Revolution. I will definitely help spread this : )

  • Ok, I promise to smile at one stranger every day if I leave the house. (I'm kind of a home-body.) I like this movement. I'm sharing your video on facebook.

  • I don't know the language of the country I'm living in right now, so I have to use body language many times a day to communicate..a smile or a door held open actually is a highlight for me a lot these days and as I see how much it means to me I try to do it all the time! Great video!

  • I have this idea I have been sitting on for a while but no idea how to move forward with it. Standard.

  • your like a female ginger jesus! :)

  • will christmas never end!!!!

  • your new channel design is awesome!!! i really love it:)

oh, being kind is so difficult! thank you for reminding me how important it is though!

  • Your end screen makes me want to watch LOTR SO BADLY. I really like it :)

  • dftba and be kind :)

  • I LOVE your end screen and channel design. xD

  • yesterday i walked into the bathroom at the mall after having a really shitty day. there was only one other girl in there washing her hands, and before I could reach a stall to cry she said "excuse me, don't think i'm a creeper or anything, but you have really pretty eyes". Basically i went in there to cry and came out smiling (:

  • @NORMALisafunnyword that is nice

  • Yayy. Everyone should do this :)

Also, no resolutions (I figure if you wanna change something about yourself that badly, why wait till the new year?) but I am definitely trying not to let what people think of me affect me anymore :)

  • @HazelWHOREFACE i think people use new years as a opportunity to measure what they are doing by a year, so basically to create a deadline

  • Get well soon! =)

  • Main goal of 2012- Graduate with a 2:1 and find a job! Will also make a more conscious effort to be a good person, though I do hold doors, smile at strangers a lot already, just need to add compliments to the list, since I always compliment my friends, I'm hoping it'll be natural enough to do to strangers too.

  • I always have a really hard time sticking with something, so I started a tumblr on which I will post daily pictures of myself making an effort to do something interesting with my day. I'm usually on my couch all day, but hopefully this could change that. I've got a couple of followers already, so I think I'm off to a good start. Let's see if I can keep it up all year. :) imtheface366.tumblr.com is the link if you'd like to check it out. Don't feel obligated, though. :)

  • is that lord of the rings music on the end screen?? if so u r awesome!

  • When I'm working in retail during the holidays, I always compliment customers before realising how weird it may have sounded. Like I told a lady that her face reminded me of Pippa Middleton, and when she abashedly denied the similarity I was all, "Oh but you have really great cheekbones". Only when she walked away did I figure how creepy it was, as if I was hitting on her. There is a certain art to complimenting strangers, and I sure as hell haven't perfected it.

  • That sounds like a great project :) Also, your eyeliner looks amazing!

  • I will take up this project as well and try to be nicer and I'm also kind of lumping it up with being more outgoing and friendly. So this should be an interesting year.

    Thanks Kayley :)

  • People aren't at their best at chirstmas. They just act nicer because they have to spend time in large family groups and if they aren't nice.....

  • i try to do nice small things but i am english, the way i feel about humanity can be summed up in three minutes by almost any charlie brooker clip you can find, especially his review of sweet 16

but aaaaanyways, ill try, but dont expect much

  • I'm working on getting an apartment, preparing to have a baby, and probably going back to school. I think I'll have enough on my plate without resolutions. I always try to spread cheer, though.

  • Lovely endscreen (first compliment of the day)! I am doing the new years revolution thing and i think I am going to keep up with some of the ideas like smiling at strangers :)

  • I like your hair, Kayley. And I live in Texas; half of being a Texan is being ridiculously mannered.

  • That's a really cool endscreen Kayley! Great video as well, going to start spreading it around...

  • I'm so glad there's at least one other person out there who feels just as strongly about the Free Willy thing. Also, I LOVE the new outro!

  • Working on a new album :)

  • great video and great idea. I shall try my best to not stay looking at the ground as I walk today!

  • you really need to come to new zealand, kayley.

  • This is awesome, it's great that you're trying to put a bit more positive energy out there in the world!

Also, I usually dislike end-screens but yours is really lovely!

  • I'm working on making videos more often, trying to do so about once a week. I find it quite easy to be nice to people in that way, because most of my school is like that, so I've got practice. last semester, a group of people went around and put post-its everywhere with cute little messages on, that was pretty awesome!

  • I work with people (customers). Usually if I see someone looking sad I try to say something cheerful. They really do appreciate it.

  • I'm doing the channel 4 revolution. I think most of it's challenges coincide with good will towards man.

  • Being nice is the greatest. Actually, one of my New Years resolutions is to keep my Southern hospitality whenever I make the big move to a city. That stuff needs to be spread throughout.

Also, I'm listening to more podcasts and watching more Netflix for future inspiration.

  • Most of my resolutions are creative projects. Write more songs, write more blog posts, take more pictures. Those sorts of things.

I'm really excited for February because I'll be writing an album about 19th century prisoners from Newcastle.

  • Your thumbnail is kinda the best.

  • I hold the door for people with they're close enough for it not to be weird. I did smile to this random Italian lady on this bus the other day and she smiled back - not the only time I did it. Sometimes smiling at people is weird though so I just say 'hi', maybe with a half smile.

  • i just get called a Creeper when i do that. :[

  • I read a book called "Don't Sweat the Small Stuff"...it's pretty simple ideas and tips for leading a less stressful and happier life in general. You may be interested; I certainly found it refreshing =)

  • Plight of Kindness...AKA-Become a Minnesotan! Helloo minnesota nice?!

  • touch head as much as possible: CHECK!

  • Being nice is often overlooked, I feel like. Shouldn't be, though. It remains one of the most important things we can do with our lives.

  • i really support your proyect, here in argentina some people are very rude and that's horrible , i would like to live in a world where i can see a random person and he smile just to make you feel better ..

  • I hold the door and say "Yes ma'am" "Yes sir" at any and every chance I get...

Umm.. the other day I helped my friend pay for something when he couldn't?

  • :) <--- smile. You made me smile. Thank you for that. :) I shall spread the joy.

  • 2012 is the year I become CANCER FREE!!! (Finish my treatment on the 27th of January!) Which since being diagnosed has made me a nicer person to strangers, even though I don't have energy I'll stay longer to hold open doors, smile. I think part of being a nicer person is realizing that life is too short to be cruel.

  • @meu2002 Congrats! That's so awesome and I'm excited for you!

  • @meu2002 I wish my mum shared that view -_-

  • @meu2002 And I hope you stay cancer free for the rest of your life.

  • I do that kind of stuff all the time. I think my job has trained me to smile and greet everyone I pass by. when I'm in the store that's fine but when I'm walking around town it freaks people out when I smile and and acknowledge them.

  • @Batmary21 SAME HERE.

  • I guess you could call this a method to try and decrease world suck levels? Just a thought...

  • @thunderhayes I don't want it to be a nerdfighter thing. I want people who don't know what nerdfighteria to do it. Also, it doesn't really need a name or anything. :P

  • @owlssayhooot Yeah...I feel it should be a "no matter who you are at least give it a try" thing.

One could argue that this could have several unofficial names that change as often as the day on the calender...but it's the nature of society to try and name things.

  • I completely agree with this video. I try to live like this for two reasons: 1. It feels great when people are kind to you and 2. It feels awful when someone just doesn't realize that you are there, even if you are a stranger. Always hold the door, especially if someone is carrying something. Walk around with a smile. Say hello, please, sorry and thank you; manners matter. If someone asks for help, like directions, don't blow them off, help them.

  • This is really good! We need more positive thoughts!!!

  • I was visiting my best friend two years ago (she moved half way across the country to Minnesota), and I was walking in the Mall of America. I bumped into this girl, and instead of being annoyed and not accepting my apology, she complimented my dress. It was just so nice! Like, I'm clumsy and I get a compliment for it? Hahaha. I don't think I'll forget it for a long time (:

  • i used to say "Good afternoon" or "Good morning" to almost everyone i came by on the street but almost nobody answers back so i stopped doing it

and when people are nice to me that doesn't make me fell better unless i know those people because that why i can see if they are lying or telling the truth

  • It may just be me, but since when is holding the door something out of the ordinary?

  • I also don't really do New Years resolutions, but I have decided that my motto, if you can call it that, for this new year is 'Just Do It' (which I know is Nike's thing). I'm going to stop making excuses and just do things that needs doing, or that I want to do.

It is part of the reason that I am still going to VidCon this year, despite the fact that the person who I was going with backed out.

  • Certainly! Sounds good! It's scary sometimes, but I think you're right. It's not like anyone will bite our heads off for smiling at them.

  • Resolution: Contribute 2 more projects to my film portfolio for grad school by the end of the year.

  • Going to make more sketches to upload on my facebook page and when I get enough to make a video with those sketches set to music like I have done previously. Get more of my artwork out there.

  • decreasing world suck one smile at a time!!..

  • It's funny how random acts of kindness can turn a bad day around. I do think I'm going to try this :)
