I always smile at people I pass them in the street and one time this really cute old man stopped me and told me I had a beautiful smile :) that made my day!
......."Every day, think as you wake up, today I am fortunate to have woken up, I am alive, I have a precious human life, I am not going to waste it, I am going to use all my energies to develop myself, to expand my heart out to others, to achieve enlightenment for the benefit of all beings, I am going to have kind thoughts towards others, I am not going to get angry or think badly about others, I am going to benefit others as much as I can."
I do try to make this kind of effort, and it is a lot harder than it sounds, but totally worth it.
I also made some New Year's Resolutions this year, but they are all important/ achievable (things like 'get a driver's license' and 'do a really good Halloween costume'. None of them are too vague to achieve.
I feel like you would really like this movie called "I Am." They brought up some points related to this video that you would probably enjoy. I watched it last night and found it pretty inspiring
I don't usually do new years resolutions either, but this year I really want to read at least 40 novels, because last year I kind of stopped reading for enjoyment and that's sad because it used to be something I really enjoyed. So far I've been doing good, I've already read 4. :) I'm totally going to do this being nice thing, even though I've always tried to do that. :D
Also I really like this idea a lot. People being nice is something that's important to me. So I want to try to be nicer this year as well. Thanks for this video. :)
I notice myself being mean far too often nowadays. Maybe that's just because I'm more aware of what I'm saying/doing. I'd like to work on that, as well as be a little bit nicer to myself. (Because you know what? I'm actually fucking awesome.)
I have always tried to make people feel better and smile or tell them I like their outfit! I've been doing that since one time I felt that I didn't look all that nice and someone just came up to me held the door open and said they liked my shoes :D It just makes people feel better
I am working on being away from my family for the first time. I am over here in Lancaster, England, and it's hard not to be able to talk to my loved ones whenever I want. Add that to being in a new place (and a new country for the first time) and figuring out a new University. So my goal is just to try to make the most of it and still go out and have fun though I may not feel like it.
For my new years resolution... thinggy... Me and my friend (who can be found on youtube and her channel is thoughtumentary) are writing every day for 2012. That's 366 days. we have a blog. It can be found on my channel under links
I always try to be nice to strangers. Not only makes it them feel better, it makes you feel better too. I went to a Christmas market with my friend and there was a small ferris wheel that we watched for a while. It was empty the entire time, people walked past without looking up and the owner, an old man, looked really sad and grumpy. We decided to go on it, he took our photo afterwards and he seemed so happy when we wished him and his wife a Merry Christmas afterwards. It's the little things :)
I always hate when I'm trying to say hi to someone walking by, but they never make eye contact with me. Just because I have headphones in, doesn't mean I'm going to completely ignore you.
Hey Kayley. I'd recommend, if you have the time, reading Daniel Goleman's "Emotional Intelligence". Mainly because in the introduction he tells a story specifically related to what you're talking about in this video. Greetings from Nottingham (what most londoners will refer to as "the north", though being icelandic its far from it to me ...)
I usually try to make eye contact with strangers walking by and smile, but I find their determination not to look at me a little intimidating. So I end up doing a silly-looking thing with my head, raising it every other step to check if they're looking at me, and then smile if they are XD
This month I'm taking part in the new year revolution which is a project made by channel four in the UK to get people to try and do new things everyday...one of the days was to give at least 5 people, 2 of which you didn't know a genuine compliment and another day was to help out or give something you like such a book by your favourite author to someone which I thought actually links really well with this video :D
This year I want to send more letters. Snail mail is something everyone can enjoy.
Also, when I think a compliment about someone, I want to make sure I tell them. I may not remember that I told some girl I like her sweater, but I bet she will remember it.
This is a really good idea. There have been times when a stranger complements my shirt or somthing after Ive been having a bad day and it just lifts my spirits a great bunch.
My friends always say i'm this grumpy person, but i'm like the only person that holds doors open for people, or picks things up that people have dropped or wiped somebodies face after they've been crying after being screamed at by the biggest scariest teacher in school(etc) And it still kind of annoys me how people are always surprised when i do these things. Is it because of the way I look I don't know, but i find myself being the only person around school doing these things. love this concept.
Oh, and a couple of my friends and I have started this thing where each day, we all have to write down three things that were good that day. Kinda like "Why today is awesome".
I actually borrowed an idea from one of your old videos, everyday day I have been writing a couple of lines about why that day was awesome, and so far it's been really easy, I've had loads of lovely things to say so far about 2012.
Glad to hear you're into being nice! I really recommend The Art of Happiness by The Dalai Lama and Howard C. Cutler (if you haven't read it already) for some great ideas about being nice and being happy - the Dalai Lama reckons you can make you're own day as well as that of others by being that much nicer, and I find this to be overwhelmingly true :)
I work at McDonald's and sometimes it's so hard to be nice, but I figure that people need a little pick me up sometimes, so I try to be nice even when I want to hate everyone.
(continued from previous comment..) I think this group is great and might be something you'd be interested in. If you are you can sign up to get an email once a week with a mission in it. There is never any spam and it's run by really lovely people, it's really inspirational. Obviously you don't have to I just thought it might be something you'd be interested in. Thanks for a great video!
This video is really great, it reminds me of a group called ItStartsWith.Us which I joined fairly recently who are trying to make the world better by doing a "mission" every week. For example this week's is to donate something you don't use. Past missions have included: tell someone they're beautiful, write a letter to someone who is special to you, reconnect with someone you've lost touch with. (not enough characters to finish my explanation...)
I already kind of try to. Like if I'm walking out a door and someone's behind me, I'll hold it open to them and just kind of smile at them. Even if I'm having a completely awful day I just can't let the door go, I'll like gently pass it off, making sure the person has it because I've gotten hit by doors it brings down your mood just so much.
But this is a really nice movement and I think I'll, also, be trying to be nicer when I can. :)
I have my headphones in usually but I always smile to strangers. Not many of them smile back though, a lot of them see me and just give me a weird look. But I am going to keep smiling.
This year I want to read more, go on holiday and finish watching all of the tv series I've started :) (Sopranos, Battlestar Galactica and Twin Peaks are my main priorities.)
I don't really like people, but I consider myself to be above average polite to strangers, and then sometimes awfully sarcastic to my friends. I'm weird.
I do exactly the same. I've always got my head held high smiling at people, holding the door open for people, saying hello, etc. Not only does it make me feel good it makes them feel good too.
My plan for 2012 is put much more effort into my YouTube channel. Make my editing & commentaries as better as I can make them. Not only that will like & favourite a lot more videos. I have a tendancy to watch a video from start to finish then click off. I need to like a favourite my subscribers videos.
I moved to London a few months ago and it's been really mind boggling to me that I see hundreds of people everyday and no one looks at or interacts with each other. I've tried to make a point of breaking that too. A smile never hurts :)
I don't make resolutions. I make goals. My goals this year is to write 500 words per day on some kind of fiction. Spend at least 10 minutes each day in the garden. make 3 youtube videos every week. This should be a fun year.
Ok, I promise to smile at one stranger every day if I leave the house. (I'm kind of a home-body.) I like this movement. I'm sharing your video on facebook.
I don't know the language of the country I'm living in right now, so I have to use body language many times a day to communicate..a smile or a door held open actually is a highlight for me a lot these days and as I see how much it means to me I try to do it all the time! Great video!
yesterday i walked into the bathroom at the mall after having a really shitty day. there was only one other girl in there washing her hands, and before I could reach a stall to cry she said "excuse me, don't think i'm a creeper or anything, but you have really pretty eyes". Basically i went in there to cry and came out smiling (:
Also, no resolutions (I figure if you wanna change something about yourself that badly, why wait till the new year?) but I am definitely trying not to let what people think of me affect me anymore :)
Main goal of 2012- Graduate with a 2:1 and find a job! Will also make a more conscious effort to be a good person, though I do hold doors, smile at strangers a lot already, just need to add compliments to the list, since I always compliment my friends, I'm hoping it'll be natural enough to do to strangers too.
I always have a really hard time sticking with something, so I started a tumblr on which I will post daily pictures of myself making an effort to do something interesting with my day. I'm usually on my couch all day, but hopefully this could change that. I've got a couple of followers already, so I think I'm off to a good start. Let's see if I can keep it up all year. :) imtheface366.tumblr.com is the link if you'd like to check it out. Don't feel obligated, though. :)
When I'm working in retail during the holidays, I always compliment customers before realising how weird it may have sounded. Like I told a lady that her face reminded me of Pippa Middleton, and when she abashedly denied the similarity I was all, "Oh but you have really great cheekbones". Only when she walked away did I figure how creepy it was, as if I was hitting on her. There is a certain art to complimenting strangers, and I sure as hell haven't perfected it.
I will take up this project as well and try to be nicer and I'm also kind of lumping it up with being more outgoing and friendly. So this should be an interesting year.
i try to do nice small things but i am english, the way i feel about humanity can be summed up in three minutes by almost any charlie brooker clip you can find, especially his review of sweet 16
I'm working on getting an apartment, preparing to have a baby, and probably going back to school. I think I'll have enough on my plate without resolutions. I always try to spread cheer, though.
Lovely endscreen (first compliment of the day)! I am doing the new years revolution thing and i think I am going to keep up with some of the ideas like smiling at strangers :)
I'm working on making videos more often, trying to do so about once a week. I find it quite easy to be nice to people in that way, because most of my school is like that, so I've got practice. last semester, a group of people went around and put post-its everywhere with cute little messages on, that was pretty awesome!
Being nice is the greatest. Actually, one of my New Years resolutions is to keep my Southern hospitality whenever I make the big move to a city. That stuff needs to be spread throughout.
Also, I'm listening to more podcasts and watching more Netflix for future inspiration.
I hold the door for people with they're close enough for it not to be weird. I did smile to this random Italian lady on this bus the other day and she smiled back - not the only time I did it. Sometimes smiling at people is weird though so I just say 'hi', maybe with a half smile.
I read a book called "Don't Sweat the Small Stuff"...it's pretty simple ideas and tips for leading a less stressful and happier life in general. You may be interested; I certainly found it refreshing =)
i really support your proyect, here in argentina some people are very rude and that's horrible , i would like to live in a world where i can see a random person and he smile just to make you feel better ..
2012 is the year I become CANCER FREE!!! (Finish my treatment on the 27th of January!) Which since being diagnosed has made me a nicer person to strangers, even though I don't have energy I'll stay longer to hold open doors, smile. I think part of being a nicer person is realizing that life is too short to be cruel.
I do that kind of stuff all the time. I think my job has trained me to smile and greet everyone I pass by. when I'm in the store that's fine but when I'm walking around town it freaks people out when I smile and and acknowledge them.
@thunderhayes I don't want it to be a nerdfighter thing. I want people who don't know what nerdfighteria to do it. Also, it doesn't really need a name or anything. :P
@owlssayhooot Yeah...I feel it should be a "no matter who you are at least give it a try" thing.
One could argue that this could have several unofficial names that change as often as the day on the calender...but it's the nature of society to try and name things.
I completely agree with this video. I try to live like this for two reasons: 1. It feels great when people are kind to you and 2. It feels awful when someone just doesn't realize that you are there, even if you are a stranger. Always hold the door, especially if someone is carrying something. Walk around with a smile. Say hello, please, sorry and thank you; manners matter. If someone asks for help, like directions, don't blow them off, help them.
I was visiting my best friend two years ago (she moved half way across the country to Minnesota), and I was walking in the Mall of America. I bumped into this girl, and instead of being annoyed and not accepting my apology, she complimented my dress. It was just so nice! Like, I'm clumsy and I get a compliment for it? Hahaha. I don't think I'll forget it for a long time (:
i used to say "Good afternoon" or "Good morning" to almost everyone i came by on the street but almost nobody answers back so i stopped doing it
and when people are nice to me that doesn't make me fell better unless i know those people because that why i can see if they are lying or telling the truth
I also don't really do New Years resolutions, but I have decided that my motto, if you can call it that, for this new year is 'Just Do It' (which I know is Nike's thing). I'm going to stop making excuses and just do things that needs doing, or that I want to do.
It is part of the reason that I am still going to VidCon this year, despite the fact that the person who I was going with backed out.
Going to make more sketches to upload on my facebook page and when I get enough to make a video with those sketches set to music like I have done previously. Get more of my artwork out there.
I always smile at people I pass them in the street and one time this really cute old man stopped me and told me I had a beautiful smile :) that made my day!

Good. Yes.
I've decided to take a break from big all-encompassing projects this year! So this seems like an easier little project to take on. Deal.

I'm working on making videos more often, trying to do so about once a week. I find it quite easy to be nice to people in that way, because most of my school is like that, so I've got practice. last semester, a group of people went around and put post-its everywhere with cute little messages on, that was pretty awesome!

I work with people (customers). Usually if I see someone looking sad I try to say something cheerful. They really do appreciate it.

Being nice is the greatest. Actually, one of my New Years resolutions is to keep my Southern hospitality whenever I make the big move to a city. That stuff needs to be spread throughout.
Also, I'm listening to more podcasts and watching more Netflix for future inspiration.
lesliefoundhergrail 1 month ago
Most of my resolutions are creative projects. Write more songs, write more blog posts, take more pictures. Those sorts of things.
I'm really excited for February because I'll be writing an album about 19th century prisoners from Newcastle.

I hold the door for people with they're close enough for it not to be weird. I did smile to this random Italian lady on this bus the other day and she smiled back - not the only time I did it. Sometimes smiling at people is weird though so I just say 'hi', maybe with a half smile.

2012 is the year I become CANCER FREE!!! (Finish my treatment on the 27th of January!) Which since being diagnosed has made me a nicer person to strangers, even though I don't have energy I'll stay longer to hold open doors, smile. I think part of being a nicer person is realizing that life is too short to be cruel.

owlssayhooot 1 month ago 27
@owlssayhooot Yeah...I feel it should be a "no matter who you are at least give it a try" thing.
One could argue that this could have several unofficial names that change as often as the day on the calender...but it's the nature of society to try and name things.
thunderhayes 1 month ago

Certainly! Sounds good! It's scary sometimes, but I think you're right. It's not like anyone will bite our heads off for smiling at them.
