Headed nails, of all things. Like giant carpet tacks. And so quickly done. I had thought that they began with a hammered flat sheet and then cut off triangular pieces to make what I know of as square cut nails. Very hard. Saw them in many a floor.
Nice video only thing I can see missing is the shouldering of the nail head so as to minimize taper and splitting of wood while in use, besides that good work.
i myself am a blacksmith as well... but if you want to talk nails talk to my cousin... he's been a blacksmith for 30 years.. owner of rally iron works... he had to make a million nails and 1000 hinges to build the fort stanwix for re-enactments
The atmosphere of the shop captures that old traditional feel of the blacksmithing craft. A blacksmith is his own master and he crafts his Things as he wants... when he wants... and using whatever methods he wants. There is no wrong way to make something, as long as one is making it one's own way. Craftsmanship is individuality, and the highest expression of one's own individual and unique stamp on the world.
Great video, very inspiring to see another craftsman taking pride and joy in his work.
how do you go abouts finding masters of a trade nowadays. I don't know the first place to start looking for a master blacksmith...outside of world of warcraft.
look at your Isaac Walton league committee. If youre over 18 join the group but if not ask your mom/dad to join for you. There should be a blacksmith committee. Mine in MD does... anyways if not look in the yellowbook for blacksminths. I hope this helped
if you dont know the first thing about finding master blacksmiths then on what do you base your defense of this smith's skill? The rod was burning and overheated when he took it out of the fire, hes crouched way over with NO safety glasses, and those nails have way too much taper to hold in anything. Peter you have a great shop and great tools, and im glad you take out your cutoff hardie when youre drawing out, thats the safe way. try making a header for thinner rod. and put glasses on!
Hi, friend. try and figure out the reason I made that comment, and check out the response. i think many people have forgotten how to give encouraging criticisms, avoiding sounding rude or like know-it-alls. I don't need to know what a hammer is, or even how to spell it to know when criticisms sound like the critic is showing off what they know maybe not intentionally, but as a result of some subconscious pain and anger. I don't know you, you might be nice, but your comment bleeds rotten feelings
You did a great job on this video. I like your composition and lighting as well as what you are actually doing. Could I use a few seconds of this in a video that I'm making about self-sufficiency?
this is really cool. I want to learn ow to blacksmith ist been my dream for years and years. Can you post videos on how to make these, like the steps and how you get the ores because i would really appreciate it. :)
Most of the material ejected from the anvilflies out horizontally, hence the apron is more important. For a nailer he is very slow, and these are particularly clunky nails. A competent nailer should be able to bang out at least one nail per minute with fairly uniform dimentions. (I was never that competent, it took me two and a half minuted per nail.)
Be wise about criticisms, most of the time they just embarass, hurt or sling back around to the critic. He is competent if that is the way he wishes to make nails, if that is the current level of his skill, if he is making nails for sentimental reasons, if the nails he makes work. Speed is one measure of worth that is heavily biased, because it's usually measured worthy when the person who requires it makes a lot of money; and we all know that money is a horrible way to measure worth.
You are absolutely right that my comment was poorly worded and sounded more vindictive than intended, and I owe the smith in question an apology for that.

Not for forging, but for drilling and sharp tools.

@smidjepeter Wow I have had fire scale fly back up at me. I would wear glasses all the time.
