  • born and raised in nyc myself.....joel is home :)

  • when marylan said goodbye,,, wow!!!!!

  • Maggie sure was cute! Clean and natural. You couldn't pay me enough to live in NYC.

  • This was the first time I watched this that I realized Joel actually died. I love this show.

  • is this the same guy playing joel at the start of the series? doesn't look like it. its freakin unfair that joel has to leave beautiful alaska for a dump like new york, the sky full of buildings, dirty streets, and high crime rates (no offense to those who live in ny), and the woman of his dreams maggie :( i guess this is the meaning of pathos, but you know what I wouldnt have minded the cliche even if he had stayed in alaska.... but if this is how its meant to be.... :( (tears falling)....

  • Haha! Joel's postcard is addressed to Maggie at Zip Code 99729 ~ which is really Cantwell, AK (in Denali county). Population 245, with 338 houses spread over 4,680 square miles.

  • Nothing will ever replace this show for me. It was the ultimate goal TV was invented for. It was what every show wanted to be. If all shows were as good as Northern Exposure was, none of us would ever leave our homes; families would sit and laugh together, hum the theme song around the house, build Trebuchets to throw pianos around for fun, and raise antler-less Moose in our yards. The world would love us and Alaska would become the retirement center of the planet.

  • There may have been episodes afterwards but for me this is the end of Northern Exposure. Everything that came after was just to fulfill their obligations.

  • Overall, I think the point is that Joel is returning to NYC as a changed man, having gone through a transformation while in Alaska, and he is now seeing New York in a more enlightened way and will be able to impart what he has learned for the rest of his life within his home state. His time in Alaska has been one of the best experiences of his life. Certainly it has been for the history of television.

  • mega nostalgia. thanks for the post!

  • I loved this ending! Until I started questioning it. I read a discussion about the possibility of Joel dying in this episode. In that case, his New York "state of mind" would be his afterlife. This made a strange sense to me because I could never see him returning to NYC after he transformed into this rugged nature man. Or the fact that no one in town cared that he was gone! That was the worst part. But I can't really trust anything from this last bit of the show. It just wasn't the same.

  • Thae moment when Marilyn says "goodbye" I have never forgot. And it's been years and years and years.

    Classic, great TV show.

  • @Sweet92Sue According to Hollywood, all native Americans are clairvoyant, telepathically interact with one another, basically they all have "The Shining".

On another point, I WANT THAT TRUCK.

  • That is one of the saddest things I have ever seen.

  • Maggie was the ULTIMATE!! Joel you should have stayed Brother!!

  • Man.. how he could leave such Hottie behind.. what a Putz !!

And isn't that Los Lobos over the credits at the end?? EXCellent choice.

  • Fleischman's So Hott in this scene. I loved how Mature he has become.

  • The whole series they build the relationship between Fleischman and Maggie and then end it up like this....kind of unsatisfying for me.

  • @vitezjura Fleshman was a kosher-cruel flesh-eating Jew. Maggie married Chris, the nature loving, Renaissance man.

  • I so miss this show, my favorite of all time.

  • Always looked for another Northern Exposure....Never Found It in TV.

  • the fact that they used the latin playboys to send him off was awesome

  • I wish I could buy only the first half of S6 on dvd, and have it end with this episode. So good. Marilyn looking up and saying "goodbye" always makes me tear up.

  • Truly awesome TV show. I forgot how much I missed it.

  • My heart breaks. Such a great show. Joel and Maggie were wonderful characters and should have ended up together. Seeing the twin towers just makes it even more poignant.

  • I absolutely LOVED this show. But toward the end I wondered if the writers were doing opium. There were some very strange episodes that didn't seem to make much sense. For instance-when shelly met Eve, Queen Victoria, Joan of Arc, etc in the woods. Or the dream episode. The Green man, the hyperallergic guy. Got kind of far out there.

  • @bashfulbrother Didn't

Shelly meet her younger self once too like Maggie in season six? Yes there were some strange episodes but believing in 'anything is possible" was the good thing about it. Anything could happen and wasn't limited to real life.

  • @shannonm75 I have to somewhat agree with you. This was all about character study, and they did the best job ever on the small screen. There has never been a program before or since that did such a great job writing such interesting characters.

I guess that after Joel left is lost it's focus. They tried to bring in the new doctor, but they had jumped the shark already.

  • When Rob Morrow left the show, i didn't want to watch Northern Exposure anymore. Alot of people agreed with me on that one. They are probably standing on the outskirts of Seattle Washington, Not New York City

  • When Rob Morrow left the show, i didn't want to watch Northern Exposure anymore. Alot of people agreed with me on that one.

  • Maggie is super-fine!!!

  • One thing I like about some of these is that they are put up with the original music. Nothing is better than that. So sad that the DVD came out with substitutes as happened with a number of other series' DVDs. Thanks for putting it up like this.

  • Yep, RM kinda messed up and it took him till Numb3rs to get back on track.

  • Most series, i think, take a season or two to hit their stride, then run out of gas after about the fifth season. Exceptions make the rule, but writers run out of ideas, actors get restless, everybody looks for greener pastures. Alas, nothing last forever.

  • Watching any of these chapters after:

1.- Having a bad day at work

    2.- Arguing with your love

    3.- Feeling betrayed by someone

4.- Getting back home at night drunk

5.- Even having had a really good time....

You see any of these chapters, and I don't know why, but you get to find along the story the answer or the feeling that makes you keep on moving with a smile.

I don't know why...must be something about chakras, karma, nirvana...or even tai chi...Who knows...

  • The only reason the show ended was because Fleischman's actor thought he could make it in movies, and wanted to "move on". This left a gaping hole in the show's chemistry poorly filled by the replacement doctor, and the show simply collapsed. Ironically, his notions of a movie career never materialized, and he would have made far more had he stayed on the show.

Its sad, because the show still could have had a few more years in it.

  • @Raptoridaner i though the tv execs canned it? i thought it had nothing to do with rob morrow leaving?

  • @Raptoridaner - I don't understand that final scene where they were in the bush peering out at the New York City skyline. Did Fleischman walk off into the wild only to freeze to death? How could he have ended up in New York if he and Maggie were up in the bush looking for the "Jewel City of the North"?

    I've never understood this episode.

  • @shimokita2 If you don't get that scene, then you don't understand the show, period. It's all about FEELING the characters and their odd situations. The metaphysical realm, and its strangeness, weaves its way throughout the whole series. You can't take anything too literally, or you'll miss the point, if there is one. And the point is that everything in the show is subjective, like art, or music. The bizarre, spiritual aspect of this show is what made it an epic.

  • ahh great show. loved this song. sad

  • please before this show..which i loved. there were other great ones! st. elsewhere. hill street blues, trapper john, china beach, etc..and im sure people older than me, will name more!!

  • I struggled with this ending for Joel. If we believe that he had truly become Mr. Spiritual, at one with nature, why would his dream place still be New York? Is it supposed to be the real New York, through some sort of portal, or is it some sort of nature/New York combo? I know that they then showed him on the boat looking all at peace - so we are presumably supposed to think that he has taken his inner peace to New York. Hmm.

  • @Northwestlondoner - I agree. I've never understood how he went from being in the middle of the bush to riding a ferry in New York. What the heck happened?

  • I wish they'd at least spend the bucks to shoot some of these scenes in cold weather. Breath....cold temps....YOU SEE IT. Tired of seeing cold weather scenes shot in 70+ degree sets......Haven't we evolved from "It's a Wonderful Life" snow scenes?????

  • @proffromgview i agree...and they don't make shows like northern exposure anymore..this was my only favorite show ever. have the entire 6 years on dvd.

  • the ending. the towers. the song. wow.

  • Ok I'm confused! Was that the end of the series?!!!

  • @Kittybombshell no it wasn't unfortunitly. this really had the end of a series feel to it , but the series kept going for about nine more episodes.i think it should have ben the ending, but then againg i still like the real ending... as a fan imiss shows like this..

  • I think you have to have quite unstable mind to want to live in New York. That's why, if Joel had changed during the stay in Cicely and found some inner peace, it seems unrealistic that he would like to go back there. Or maybe he just didn't change so much after all.

  • @justsumting i really don't think you can speak for EVERYONE. each space means something different to each person...

  • crunchy, can u upload the episode which marylin goes to seattle and this ojibwe song playing at the background. i think its from"learnig curve".

  • That last scene really is very moving in light of what happened on 911.

I didn't like the World Trade Center but seeing this I realize how I'm effected now that it's not there and how much I want it back..

I work about two miles away from where it was located but at one time I worked about five blocks away.

  • Thank you so much for putting this up.

  • nooooooooooooooooo! they had 2 get 2gether! :(

  • My favorite TV show of all time. Nothing compares to this.

  • @goofygoat2009 Yikes. I watched all the episodes....it hasn't aged well....

  • @goofygoat2009 not sure what you mean that "it hasn't aged well". But it was a damn good show.

  • @goofygoat2009_will you please explain to me what's so great about this programme? It just seems kind of dull to me.

  • @ofcoursehesthefarmer yes i'll explain: 1) the charachters are all interesting with rich backgrounds. 2) the show is funny and quirky and is about real life. 3) the writing is SUPERB. i have learned more vocabulary, metaphors, history, myths, folklore, classic story characters and more from this tv show alone, more so than any other tv show. that's damn good writing. 4) you can actually learn some things from this tv show. when adam gives ed the third degree by yelling "nature's a bitch!"

  • So sorry HHDV, Chris was the Real Deal-her soul mate. N.E. was the best, she made it great! Thanks for posting Crunchy!

  • I believe that too but why did they wait for so long... all that time it was like they were just friends, but bam! suddenly in season 6 chris and maggie were an item.

  • You've been blocked. I don't need this anti-semitic shit polluting my Comments section.

  • Wow, I don't think he was being that. He is just annoyed of how the character evolved on the series. And in the end it was like no difference between Joel Fleischman and Rob Morrow.

  • You didn't see some of his comments on other threads that I deleted.

And you really think "Jew York" is not anti-semitic?

  • i love this show and i dont hate anyone. but i live in new york and "jew york" is kinda funny.

  • TV has never done anything better than this show.

  • I cried my eyes out when I first saw this... :'(

  • Comment removed

  • she is really really REALLY beautiful

  • what they dont end up together!?!?!?

  • what kept them apart is what kept things entertaining

  • adam was best part os show

  • Best show in the history of television.

  • @shire2005 Amen.

  • Elaine Miles was fantastic. Her eyes said it all!

  • Nice to see the trade towers in the mist.

  • they are re-running this show in Canada via APTN channel every tuesday to friday 12pm and 5 pm...yahoo... i wish there will be another show like this where there is so much depth and inspires everyone.

  • This clip makes me miss this show more than ever. I am going to buy the DVD's when I can for sure now!

  • I netflixed this episode and this was not the music they used. What they put in completely murdered the scene, this original music is so much more reflective.

  • I cried the first..... no, maybe the second...... OK i cried QUITE a few times whenever I watched this.

  • and WTC... makes my heart pump up :)

  • I've never understood this scene. They are in the middle of the bush! Where did Joel go? What city is that they are looking at? But really, where did he go?

  • He went to New York. They were looking at NY. Because, if you remember, at the end he sends Maggie a postcard with "NEW YORK IS A STATE OF MIND" written on the back. Basically, New York is the best place in the world, a dream come true, and whatever else!! (No, I'm not from NY. :) But this scene was kinda..... far fetched. Good, though. )

  • maggie should have gone or joel should have stayed. this whole relationship and the build up throughout the series' made it completely impossible to accept chris and maggie together. she loves joel!! great show, lost its sparkle once rob morrow left i feel.

  • i agree. and phil capra didn't fit in that well either, i thought.

  • If only I could fully relate to her point of view, maybe my love life would be as bountiful as fleishcman's. I admire his patience and maturity with the opposite sex, yet still keeps some skepticism and resist being influenced by others too much. I'll shut up now.

  • I didn't really see much conviction in maggie's argument to stay. Her point of view seems like she just came up with that at the last minute so she wouldn't have to live in big ole scary new york. I'm being somewhat judgmental though.

  • This was one of those many surreal scenes. Mixed with the unique characters, cool music and story lines, made this show one of the best ever made on TV. The last few episodes didn't bother me as much as it did others. As a bartender once wisely said, "All things end badly. Otherwise they wouldn't end!"

  • :____________

  • Best show ever! It has my vote too!

  • Simply thee most beautiful thing I've ever seen on a tv show. Amen!

  • I agree with you! I watched it only once and I got shocked. Thanks the net it's possible to watch it again. I think in Spanish this chapter was called "la ciudad de las esmeraldas"

  • I feel sad that during the rare instances where I hear this series brought up, people bash it for jumping the shark during this particular season and they basically look down upon it for that. This was a beautiful show with depth that has yet to be matched. It should have never faded from public consciousness.

  • This always makes me cry

  • best show ever

  • To me, Northern Exposure is simply a perfect series. I would only change one thing: this episode should've been the ending.

  • Good thought.

  • It is beautiful, but then again, Iris dements 'our town' is a real tear jerker in Tranquility Base though

  • i've been looking for that shortcut for years

  • I like this ending a lot

Probably should've stopped the series after

  • never before has a show touched our hearts and minds, what an incredible journey, we miss them all... si&linds :)

  • never before has a show touched our hearts and minds, what an incredible journey, we miss them all... si&linds :)

  • only a moonbeam.

  • i started loving maggie and joel since 1990 and still loving them!!

  • i remember super loving it when i was 13 years old and now at 31, still love it so much! sooo sad rob morrow had to leave the show before it ended.. :-(

  • Well, his contract was up ;)

  • I heard he has an attitude problem and had to chose all the movies he has done over Northern Exposure.

  • Loved, loved this show. What a funny and magical series. So sad to see the Twin Towers at the end. Makes it even sadder knowing they are gone forever.

  • I remeber watching this episode when it aired and was sad because it left us with Dr. Capra. Man, Dr Capra sucks. This was my favorite show ever.

  • Kinda a Joel II

  • The best TV show EVER hands down.

  • yup

  • happy & sad
