he looks like he's just hacking wildly, and about to gouge great lumps out of himself, then you see the spoon and understand he's ovbiously a supreme craftsman! BRILLIANT!
I was almost nervous that he would cut himself while carving, but he is very skilled and controlled the blade with precision. This is a lost art and I respect it.
Hi, I was wondering if there is any precautions to choosing wood for whittling to make pipes, spoons, etc. I know that some woods are considered toxic but I'm not sure if this means I need to learn to identify all different types of trees for safety reasons before I start learning bushcraft. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for putting this up Stuart, I think it is inspirational and great to see it up for everyone to see. I just wished we had not run out of battery life and could have got film of a spoon start to finish. That's my stills camera coming into shot at the end.
im carving a mesquite spoon right now it is so painstaking and to see someone wiz through a spoon like that is unbelievable

Gypsy bowl and soon carvers, who made their products from fresh poplar or willow were always very skilful. Real craft.

We have lots of craftsmen like that, I hope they keep on doing what they do and pass on to their kids the secrets of the job.
