What makes his death so much more depressing (save the fact that Aaron never got the ring, Claire never got the greatest hits and she never got rescued) was that his sacrifice was for nothing. They all went back to the island in the end (except for Aaron) and they all have the same problems. The only good thing that came from Charlie's death was that Desmond and Penny were reunited.
