  • I heard the St Albans hag now resides in the old cinema. She will devour anyone who tries to destroy her home! Beware!!!!! : OOOOO

  • You got it easy pal, try living in West Bridgford Nottingham....2 x shitty football clubs...1 x shitty awfull cricket club, park and ride, No Waiting, Riverside Festival, Paved area, 2 x Council admin doss houses, and a council that dont give a shit...cumon bub, SMILE.

  • This a a fine fine building you bunch of Philistines. I worked here in 83 and saw Return of the Jedi 23 times! , I remember Eric Morecombe coming in on one occasion. I notice St Albans planners have knocked down the pub next door "The Railway" I think it was called(shame on you) and the house opposite where I lived . This is a fine deco building and should be restored -dont repeat the same mistakes again and again -listen to the Heritage bodies they want to save the Odeon because its quality.

  • Flats are coming it was recently announced...

  • if this is true then you have lost another fine building.

  • To schemadesighn It is clear from your wording that you are selfish and a bore.I am sure the resident friends you know would also like it demolished, that is because you are a special group of twits. You should hire some dvd special edition box sets for lubeless stuffing up your behind.A way of distracting yourself from these important issues,it will do you much good!Have fun!

  • you go girl

  • This is a nice little film, and I liked going to the Odeon when it was open, but I don't support the campaign to save it.

It's not "a fine example of Art Deco", it's a very poor example of Art Deco and one of the ugliest buildings in St Albans. People who sentimentalise it are completly lacking in artistic judgement.

I do support the campaing for a cinema in St Albans, but not on this site, which is badly placed for a modern picture house. It's better suited to flats ("faceless" or not).

  • ...disagree with schemadesign contd...

If I still lived in this area of St. Albans, I'd be more concerned about plans for a supermarket in the area and the major impact on local residents. On the other hand I'd be quite excited about the prospect of the re-opening of an historic and architecturally important building that would generate responsible and positive social activity; probably increase business volumes to local small business and probably add value to my property.

  • How would having a cinema on your doorstep add value to your property, with noise (assuming last film ends at midnight), litter and no parking.

  • ...disagree with schemadesign contd...

Your idea of "hiring a DVD" suggests that you are confusing the experience of "going to the cinema" with "watching a film". I would go to the Rex if I could ever get tickets, but it is permanently sold out.

  • ...disagree with schemadesign contd...

I lived in the local surrounding area when the Odeon was open. It was in line of sight of the flat I lived in. I recall a building in excellent repair outside and in. A fantastic example of Art Deco architecture. Re-opened it would be restored to former glory. RE: Parking: I've lived in the centre of St. Albans for 14 years and like most in this position accept that guaranteed parking is a compromise you make to have everything on your doorstep.

then why do i have to pay for the privelige of NOT being able to park my car in the evening? The cinema being restored will only mean less parking for local homeowners.

  • I disagree with schemadesign -- the local area is not a dump. Are you a local surrounding resident, and if so, are your neighbours aware that you think you live in a dump? Did they nominate you to be the spokesperson to rubbish the area?

The commercial premises in the area are run down, probably deliberately, but that's another story. The residences in this area are not cheap - unusual for a dump!

  • yes i am local and live 2 streets away, yes the area is expensive and the price of my house is not going up as the area IS A DUMP. Crumbling buildings, Tesco's fault. and the bloody Cinema. I am not a spokesperson but as i live in a small street and chat to all the nighbours and we want that eyesore knocked down.

  • The area is a dump, there is no available parking for this cinema, all the local roads are at bursting point and the local surrounding residents if you bothered to actually ask them DON'T WANT IT RESTORED. It's an eyesore and the new flats that are planned come with parking spaces. If you want to watch a film then hire it on DVD or go to Berhamstead. NO CINEMA!

  • Oh goodness although I no longer live in the area I remember the Odeon well and saw countless films there. Such a shame to see it in this state.

  • Good luck with campaign! Worked there as a projectionist in the 60s & although I no longer live in the area,I always get a whiff of nostalgia whenever I drive past.I would love to see the interior once more. Two films I recall packing the cinema were The Jungle Book and Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush.Eric Morecambe was a regular patron & actress Angela Pleasence, daughter of film star Donald, used to live in one of the small terrace houses in the road immediately to the left of cinema.
