Just an update to all those environmentally concerned posters on this thread. In an effort to help this situ I flew to the area mentioned in this vid personally to scope out the situ. I didn't find any birds with plastic-distended bellies or plastic sea but I did manage to squash several rare sea turtles with my ATV. I made soup, it tasted lousy, we threw it away.

There are actually 5 main gyres in the world's oceans. Keep drinking your bottled water at a price that is more than gasoline. Stop using disposable items like lighters. Bring your own bags to the grocery store, leave packaging from items you buy right at the cashier (and make a point of holding up the line), we pay for all of this waste in the products we buy. There are better ways, use them.

Yes they do eat non-food (not speaking about plastic) including bits of driftwood. They have a very strong stomach that breaks down almost anything that is bio-degradable. They have a special stomach for tiny stones to get their minerals so they are able to make egg-shells.

But plastic is not biodegradable therefore it stays in their stomach undigested, takes room that prevents the bird filling its stomach with food and so it starves. Prolly suffers a lot before it dies too :(

Regardless of whether a person is a proponent of ecological and environmental concerns we cant deny that plastics effects everthing- Esp HUMANS. Ever heat your food in a plastic container that may / may not have indicated it was MICROWAVE SAFE? Have you seen those little bubbled edges inside the bowl (esp if you heated a tomato based product)? The plastic is breaking down and being ingested as we consume the food. Most likely our rotting corpse wont leave such obvious signs as the albatross.
