  • mmmm i can't understand why the first string sounds like that. What kind of tuning did you use?

  • @CEIVE4EVER

Probably in Eb. U2 tunes down 1/2 step most live songs.

  • Why is everyone that covers this wearing a navy shirt?

  • what kind of Strat is this? Is this the one Edge uses to play this song live? I've been strat hunting lately and I'm not quite sure which Strat Edge uses for Streets. Thanks

  • @helegaran

This is a 2003 Custom Shop Strat (1960s version). But I have since replaced the neck to a Custom Shop maple neck and Kinman pups. See Part A1 for my updated cover. Edge uses a late '70s strat.

  • @U2GuitarTutorials Would any American strat sound good for this song and other Strat based U2 songs? For example, a highway one strat?

  • @helegaran

Any Strat is generally ok. Pickups are important. Some are too "thin" or "bright." I recommend the Kinmans (although they are expensive). The Fender '69s are very good also I'm told. Join U2_Guitar_Tutorials group on Google groups and post what you have and ask for suggestions.

  • pls help me. I tried this with delay, but it does not sound that well. Can you tell me what the proper altitude is? My amplifier is not a really expensive one but maybe it will work. There are no numbers on it (milli sec and what more this guy told about). If someone can help me I would be very glad:)

  • @elisdewaard1:

Watch my three part delay tutorial. Watch all of the Streets tutorial, not just this one. First make sure you are playing at the right tempo. You are asking a very broad question that is not easy to answer here. Join our group on Google Groups: U2_Guitar_Tutorials

  • Haha, I love how you say "There we go!" Exactly what I was thinking, haha.

  • Hi. I was wondering what delay unit you used for the video. Thank you!

  • @msmusic4evr: Hi, it's an old video. I'm going to update this series soon. But it was the delay in the Axe-Fx by Fractal Audio.

  • G-string is out of tune... sorry but it annoys me

  • @96dtodd:

Very old tutorial, I'm going to do an update. Actually, the guitar is in tune, but the intonation is off (in tune on the open string, but not the octave at the 12th fret). Sorry!

  • love this sound can i do this with say! a vox time machine. looking to get a delay pedal thats not to expensive any suggestions

  • @greatvalue7: No idea regarding the time machine. Try the Boss DD-20. It's very good for U2 stuff.

  • can you get that sound with an analog delay or does it need to be digital?

  • @dimefu34 It can be either, but The Edge uses an Electro Harmonix Memory Man which if i recall is Analogue, but something like a Boss DD3 or DD7 would do just as good

  • This is by far the most detailed and accurate tutorial I've seen so far. Thank you very much. Excellent. I've just bought a Fender VM Deluxe with built in delay and getting a pretty similar tone and effect to this. Nice tutorial.

  • please tell me your delay setting for this song

  • @rolando0572:

I think I provide it in one of the tutorials. It's a dotted 8th note delay at 127 BPM (beats per minute) which equals 354ms.

  • No offense, but is the guitar in tune?

  • @davec3487:

You are probably right. I think it was officially in tune, but the intonation was off, so it was slightly off high up the neck. You may be right. It's an old tutorial that I need to redo someday.

  • Michael are you using Kinman Pickups, and if so what model? Contemplating which model to buy uncertain on whether or not to buy Woodstock or MK-III pickups to get some nice quack and some nice bright, strong tones.

  • I have the Woodstocks and love them. Very slightly hotter than my '73 Fender vintage pups. Don't get the Plus bridge, just the regular set. I also recommend the harness.

    Michael

  • you want 7 or 8 repeats

  • Adjust to your liking. You are playing over the notes so the first few repeats are the most important; however, you are correct, I believe Edge uses more repeats on this than other songs. The BBC interview with Edge seems to have 6 or 7.

  • DAmn, your good m8 !!

  • Thanks for the quick response! I agree about the drummer following, have not figured out if I can tap a dotted 8th in my vox tonelab le on the fly. The modulated delay seems to sound pretty good. Also, does the feedback setting matter much or is it more preference as long as it isn't too many repeats?

  • I don't think it matters much. I use 5 or 6, but 3 or 4 is just fine. You are picking on top of it and there are few long pauses.

  • @U2GuitarTutorials hi i have a pretty basic delay pedal its called and ibanez for the range ti doesnt let you go to specific mount it just has 30-160 120-650 and 480-2600 ms is thier a specific delay peadl that i need?

  • Try a Boss DD-20. Great modulated delay for U2 songs.

  • @U2GuitarTutorials is that cheap or does that come with like an effect pedals or its its single thing by it self

  • Sorry, is what cheap? The effects unit? It's an Axe-Fx Ultra by Fractal Audio. If that' what you mean, then, nope, actually it's pretty expensive. Almost $2k. It's probably the most advanced digital effects processor on the market.

  • I am trying to get this delay thing and found a delay/bpm calculator that seems to help if I know the bpm of a song. If a song is the 127 bpm and I set it at 354ms, when I play it will repeat in a dotted 8th right? Seems to sound right. Same for the other example below right? Thanks, advice welcome.

    354ms=127bpm

    441ms=102 bpm

  • Yes, you got it. At a certain BPM, the type of note dictates the speed. This way if your band plays at a different BPM then you can adjust accordingly. Keep in mind that if you set up your delays times, then the drummer needs to stay on the agreed beat.

  • It's harder for a guitarist to change all his delay times at the last second, so the drummer should follow the guitarist. Story goes that Edge foot stomping comes from the early days before they had in ear monitors. Larry needed to be on the right BPM to make sure Edge's delay times worked.

  • crap i need a delay pedal for this! my delay on my amp wont work!

  • Depends what you are after. You definitely want a modulated delay for this song. Also Strat in quack position (bridge and middle pups).

    M

  • Me again!! Sorry. I bought a vox head and 4/12 cabinet. It just has the tap delay. Do you think the delay could be set to what you are doing? You have it dead on man. I kinda learned a diff version from that questpoet guy. It's off a little. Someone would know the tune but yours is dead on. Thank you for your help bud.

  • You're welcome. You mean the tap delay is built into your Vox head? Not sure if it will work or not. Watch the tutorials to get delay settings. It's a dotted 8th note delay. Better to have a modulated delay pedal like the Boss DD-20.

  • 1. I love ur strat

    2. love the tone

and 3. great vid 5 stars!!!!!!

  • what delay pedal do you use?

  • I use Fractal Audio's Axe-Fx Ultra digital guitar processor.

  • g string out of tune?

  • This is one of my old tutorials. You may be right. Or what happened is that the guitar was in tune, but the intonation was off (out of tune when played on the higher frets).

  • i can get it with a dd5 AND compression, with out the compresor it doesnt work. my favourite riff of all time

  • One quick question- Is your guitar flat tuning or normal tuning or just a different kind of tuning?

  • Thanks. I actually had some time over the past few days since my last posting to you and figured that out myself. I was holding the pick perp in the traditional way and not really brushing the strings the way you need to to pick individual notes. Does he (The Edge)strum chords with that end also? I've tried that and it can feel/sound a little clumsy. Is that just part of the learning curve too?

  • Question for anyone who will help... When you play these songs with the Herdim pcik, do you use the rounded long side or the rounded corner? I find that my strings almost get caught on the edges... can anyone offer a tip??? Thanks!

  • I use the side of the pick toward the end or in other words one of the big corners, not the big flat end or the pointed end.

    Michael

  • Thanks, I've been using it the same way. I find that the pick will grab the thinner strings and cause a snapping. Is there a technique that I am missing or did i get a bum set of picks? Thanks again.

  • Not sure what you mean. Don't play with the pick perfectly perpendicular. Make sure you have some angle, otherwise it will get caught easily.

  • I know what you mean. I had a nylon pick that would get caught on the high strings. The grooves in the pick weren't smooth enough. I use Jim Dunlop nylon picks now and those work fine.

  • thank you so much...i have been waiting for something exactly like this...perfect explainations....if you ever decide to put your lessons on dvd I would buy !

  • sounds great...thx!!

  • Thx, I'm not surprised. I have to take this guitar in to be set up. Having trouble with pegs and sticking.

  • nice but your G string is sharp

  • That's not necessarily true. It varies depending on the show. In general, yes, U2 has tuned down to make it easier for Bono's vocals, but not all songs are tuned down. The studio version of Streets on Joshua Tree and the versionon the Live in Chicago Vertigo tour DVD are both in stanard tuning. Slane DVD version is tuned down to Eb. You have to listen to the version you want and tune to it appropriately.

  • oh ok, thanks.

  • hi, were is the chorus and delay coming from? like wat pedals and amp are you using to get that sound out of

    ?

  • I used the TC2290 and the amp models in my Axe-Fx Ultra (with some reverb also). There is no independent chorus in Streets. Just modulated delay which is a delay with a chorus effect within the repeats. Almost all of Edge's delays are modulated. You don't need to use the TC2290. Boss DD-20 also has a great modulated delay, as does the TC DTwo. You want the depth up high but not so high that it gets too "warbly." I set the rate at about 2.8hz (which is in line with the tempo).

  • ok. so in fact: dotted eight delay (127bmp), an other delay (1/16dot ?), a bit of reverb... right? :) compressor?

  • I didn't use a compressor, but you can experiment to your liking. Yes, had some reverb at the end of my signal path. In this video, no other delay except for the dotted 8th if I recall correctly. See Part 7 and 8 for my updated Streets tone. Only one delay (dotted 8th) in those videos for sure. The rest is the amp settings to get the amp just on the edge of breaking into a slight drive.

  • Hi, it could have been in normal tuning, but I believe I was tuned in Eb (one half step down). You should be able to tell by tuning your guitar in normal tuning and then compare a couple notes.
