I just bought my first flute from your step son Ram on Saturday here in Eugene, OR.
I can say that I am completely satisfied and in Love with it. I am now watching all of the lessons you've provided (and I Am extremely Grateful for that) and I will continue my practice every day into eternity! Thank You.
One question,
I cannot remember which key this flute is in. It is a 6 hole flute, medium sized. It's not a pocket flute, but it's not your full sized flutes either. Any tip on finding out?
I will get an Odell flute in the next days and I feel so happy to learn and play it. Thanks for this great videos. They are easy to understand, even for german speakers as I am. Funny too, and I like the message as it is: Relax, play, let it flow...
I love your video's. They are very helpful and I appreciate you putting them on here. I bought one of your flute's and I am more of a visual person. Thank you. I have always loved this flute and it is so beautiful and is great for expression.
Dear brother, I'm looking to buy my first flute. When i hear the flute my spirit goes on a jouney. What would you reccommend for my first flute? thank you for taking the time and posting your videos.
hey odell i would like to say thanks for your flute or as we say in mohawk ne:awa i am about to perchus 2 flutes on your website this month i am alos a aperntis under joseph firecrow and i would just like to say thanks for makeing your flutes
I recently purchased one of your flutes. That was my very first mistake that I learned I was doing after watching this segment, trying to cover the holes with the tips of my fingers.
I'm getting better as time goes by, and I'm very happy to have found a passion in this particular style of flute. I suffer from severe stress because of where I work, but when I get home I just start playing, and it feels like the stress just melts away.
Thank you for helping keep the magic of this music alive!
I'm from Brazil and I just got a native American Flute today. Your lessons here are just great for who wants to leran and does not know anything about the flute. You are a gifted person and God bless you for that. I love the Shamanic musics and using your tips i'm already playing one whole song after two hour training, thanks to you. Take care. Saudações do Brasil.
Hi Odel. I have the High Spirits Condor E and Golden Eagle F#. After I play them for a while, its like they quit working! Even with all holes open, air will not go through except enough to get a squeek. I can set it down and come back to it later and it is going again. Can moisture do this?
bought my first native american flute recently. haven't been able to put it down since! so beautiful and easy to play. thankyou for these videos.very helpful.
thanks for this video!! i play flute, and my parents just recently pulled out a cool native american flute we've apparently had for a long time but no one in my family has known how to play it. i was messing with it and sometimes the sound would come out good and sometimes not at all, so i didnt know why till i watched this. the only problem is mine is 6-hole and the holes are over 1 inch apart. and i have small hands, lol. but this helps a lot and i'll keep working on it.
this really resonates with my heart-beautiful sharing and gifting. i send all my blessings to you and know that by using this lessons i will have that returned a thousand fold.
Love the simple melody - haunting and touching - peaceful to my soul and now I know why: I learned in the last couple of years that I am descended from Native Americans - one of my grandfathers whom I never knew was Cherokee. It all makes sense now. Peace.
My name is stands alone! i have just recieved my red tail hawk in the key of G and wanted to say that your flute has brought many good feelings to my heart!
Excellent series! I think watching these sealed the deal on getting my first flute. It's been over a year since I got my first D#, and have since collected both a high and low F from Manny Saenz. I still thoroughly enjoy playing, and plan on getting a high spirits flute from you as well.
Your flute playing is both beautiful and inspirational. I am considering getting a native american flute. I have many years of woodwind experience, and I love to play with feeling. I was wondering which flute you would recommend. I would also like to know which flute you are using in this video. Thank you!
@roonghu you know about the xiao i think i own one is it a flute that has a gourd shaped thing at the top i got it of a Chinese shop and figured id learn how to play it eventually but i cant figure out the system.if you can help me i would really appreciate it
Your flutes are superb and have such a rich, hauntingly beautiful tamber. I picked up a Cedar G at Cherokee and then your C, I also bought an F# and A from another maker made of poplar, but I am sending them back. Would you please post a video on playing with the different keys. With no keys or mechanism, one cannot transpose.
Odell, I have a question for you I am thinking of buying one of your fine flutes, what would you recomend for someone who planned one, but it was years ago when I was around 8-10 and I am 17 now so any help will be appreiated
I got my first native american flute a couple months ago in Cherokee NC and I love playing it. I just got a second...a cedar in F sharp. It bigger and harder to play but Im getting the hang of it. Your videos helped bunches. (even for me....the musically challenged) I cant wait to take it camping in the mountains and play for my family.
Odell Borg and High Spirits Flutes are the best! His flutes have such a beautiful voice, they almost play themselves. Anyone who wants to learn to play should try a High Spirits flute. As you can tell, I am a fan and customer. I play every single day, rain or shine. I am getting ready to purchase one of his drone flutes next. Great you are on YouTube Odell! Share the love! Dawn
Nice to see you here on You Tube! That first flute I bought over ten years ago is still going string (sparrowhawk) and I get wonderful comments on the sound of the D I have. Love your flutes!
I have bbeen playing the NAF for about 2 years now, and am enjoying it more with each playing. I recently found your site Odel, and its wonderful. I currently play a 'Stella' I got it in payment for a walking stick that i hand crafted. You have provided a wonderful service.
sorry coul you tell me where i can buy you instruments.. i come from south america but i like the sounf of the native american flute coul you tell me please
I appreciate your flute-making. I own several of your flutes and am mostly thrilled with them; I say "mostly" because the triple flute I have is ever-so-slightly off-key in one barrel, which creates a dissonant sound rather than a lush harmony. The double and pocket flutes, of course, are dead-on in tune. I notice that Bill Miller uses only High Spirit flutes now, whereas years ago he had a variety. Is this a personal choice of his, or does he have an exclusive arrangement with you?
It's good to find your videos on youtube! My first flute was your Red Tail Hawk. I've really enjoyed playing it. You can see me playing it at Our Lady of the Lake Univerity on youtube. Just do a search for PeacePilgrim and click on Amazing Grace. I'm looking forward to getting a Condor Bass soon. Christmas maybe? Also, I enjoyed meeting you at The National Flute Assoc. conference in Albuquerque. Hope to see you again down the road. Yours in harmony, Chuck (PeacePilgrim)
I watched the videos got really interested :) ordered my flute with the F key and after waiting for a month for delivery now here it is
:)
I got 1 question the highyest two holes do not give any sound unless i blow harder and even then the sound of the air is highyer then the sound the flute produces... any hints on that ?
could it be a defect with the flute.. if so can i fix it ...
Sorry you're having difficulties. I assume that you didn't buy it direct from me because I ship within 3 days. There could be a couple reasons why you may have difficulties. The fetish (bird) should be firmly seated (tied down) and not move easily, and be positioned so it's never covering any part of the rectangular sound hole (fipple). It should sit just slightly behind the sound hole. If you can't get a good voice out of the flute, you can call to discuss a potential fix: 800-394-1523.
I have your Sparrow Hawk A beginner flute which I'm self teaching with your video. The flute you're playing here sounds a little deaper than mine which seems to be the sound that I'm looking for.

I've been very pleased with the quality of those litte mikes. They've change the style recently so I don't know if those will work as well, but for $12 it worth a try if you want to amplify or record your flute.
