Excessive? Oh, maybe he should have been a little bit gentler, and so should all the players. It's a contact sport. Body Checking is allowed. You're allowed to play the body over the puck, which Orpik does very well. That's a defensive strategy. Skinner doesn't need "control" of the puck, he just needs possession, which he had.

Sure it MAY have been a clean it, yes he did extend his body to get the puck, but sutton got HOW MANY GAMES for a similar hit on Landeskog and there was no injury on the play. Not bs... by the rule "Moving laterally and without establishing body position, then making contact with the non-puck carrier is not permitted and will be penalized as interference." In this case Skinner is a non-puck carrier, and Orpik was moving laterally. Im not arguing the fact that it was a "clean" hit as far as body check's go (no hit to the head) but it was interference by the NHL rulebook, and was called as such.

Either way im not here to argue, but can you show me where the ref appologized for a bad call? @Tiesto6Bauer there was no lateral movement. Lateral movement means coming in from the side. He came in on a diagonal, with an almost direct line of site from Skinner. If you pause at the 0:05 mark Orpik is no more than 4-5 feet from Skinner's forward line of sight. The ref even apologized the Orpik afterward for making the wrong call.

Beauty of a hit and a pretty bad call by the refs. I really feel bad for Skinner and hope that he's not too rattled from this hit, but needless to say players really do need to be a bit more aware of what's going on around him. Sure it MAY have been a clean it, yes he did extend his body to get the puck, but sutton got HOW MANY GAMES for a similar hit on Landeskog and there was no injury on the play. I'm not saying there is a way for this to be prevented, but if he doesn't get something similar to Sutton, then I'm sorry, but Shanahan is turning this league into a joke.

There was no injury on this play. The announcers can't diagonose a concussion. Skinner played 18:09 this game. Shanahan does a great job. The Sutton suspension is justifiable, as it's a headshot. THAT is a dirty hit. I don't consider this dirty. But who knows. He may get one. I don't think he should.

Lot of dumb idiots on here, both Penguins and Canes fans. Sidney Crosby is the best player in hockey right now; he's not a pussy. Jeff Skinner is an elite hockey player, and undoubtedly the best player not named Cam Ward on the Canes; he's not a pussy. Concussions are extremely serious injuries, and if you don't realize this, then you're living in the past. I'm a Canes fan, but I'm not a terrible person so I don't take joy in seeing ANYONE get a concussion, regardless of their jersey.

Not bs... by the rule "Moving laterally and without establishing body position, then making contact with the non-puck carrier is not permitted and will be penalized as interference." In this case Skinner is a non-puck carrier, and Orpik was moving laterally. Im not arguing the fact that it was a "clean" hit as far as body check's go (no hit to the head) but it was interference by the NHL rulebook, and was called as such.

@seth2386 Being a puck carrier and just getting to a puck as a hit is delivered are two totally different things. Possession is the key here when calling interference in a case like this. Either way im not here to argue, but can you show me where the ref appologized for a bad call? I watched the game and all post game interviews from both sides, as well as searched for anything to back that, but could not find it. Im not saying it didnt happen, but I would be interested in reading about it.

@Tiesto6Bauer Its the same hit as a forecheck hit, as soon as the defensemen as the puck he gets nailed, however the leauge is trying to get rid of that for obvious reasons.. but contrary to the rule which you provided the hit is legal wihtout a penalty he played the puck carrier. In my opinion skinner was already looking to go down on ice with the puck he got caught looking down. thats why it looked like a bad hit

@Tiesto6Bauer there was no lateral movement. Lateral movement means coming in from the side. He came in on a diagonal, with an almost direct line of site from Skinner. If you pause at the 0:05 mark Orpik is no more than 4-5 feet from Skinner's forward line of sight. The ref even apologized the Orpik afterward for making the wrong call.

Beauty of a hit and a pretty bad call by the refs. I really feel bad for Skinner and hope that he's not too rattled from this hit, but needless to say players really do need to be a bit more aware of what's going on around him. You don't skate through open us with your eyes focused solely on the puck and not expect to get clocked.

Great clean hit. BS call, but at least it did not cost them the game or anything. Would hate to see a clean hit cause someone a game. Also, why the hell did they bring Skinner back after this? He is their franchise player down the road, only 19 and already had a concussion this year. And they are 8 miles out of the playoffs. Rest the guy to be on the safe side.
