Old growth trees are very important. Far more important than the 2-3 trees that *MAY* replace it. Certain species of animals, the endangered Spotted Owl for instance, rely SOLELY on old growth forests. Old growth trees should NEVER be touched. If some fool is dumb enough to be in the way of a 700 year old tree falling, then he deserves to be IMO. I understand that it is impossible to get away from habitat murder with so many people in the world. That's why we need another Hitler, or 10. Period.

This tree could have easily lived for years before falling on its own accord, thus providing TONS, literally, of oxygen. 1:20 shows a SMALL rotten spot. While it is true that mature trees in general produce more oxygen than young trees, it is also true that they use up more oxygen for maintenance.
