  • I think Dan contradicts himself when he says that he was one of the lucky sperms that was strong enough to make it through and thus living the "after life" but he glorified Margaret Sanger for her contribution to society for inventing the birth control. Isn't that an oxy-moran? One cannot destroy life by promoting birth-control/abortions and yet says life is precious! I guess evolution or natural selection promotes destroying life. I guess that's where "freethinking" takes u! Go figure!!!

  • @Tzephaniyah Margret did not "invent" birth control. Both genders have used various methods of birth control for a long time. Margret Sanger fought against forced pregnancy - at the point of a gun. Margret Sanger fought for women being able to enjoy their sexuality without the fear of being burdened by pregnancy. The only cure for abortions is proper birth control methods.

Evolution by Natural Selection does not "promote" anything - it is merely a description, an explanation of how Nature works.

  • @AGNOSSI Since when has pregnancy become a burden? If one doesn't want to bring a precious life into this world, don't have sex.Very simple! The true birth control is "just say no." What I'm afraid of with all this Atheistic rhetoric of "freethinking" secularism is that it will become the opposite arm of the pendulum which makes education/intellectualism our new religion - thus becoming our "God" equally intellectually deficient! No one really thinks free. We learn from others. Just a thought.

  • @Tzephaniyah "Just say no" doesn't work. EVERYBODY knows THAT!

Just admit it man...you like to Lord it over women and control them in any way that you can...don't you? I bet you believe that a man has a right to beat his wife too...don't you? I bet you believe that women should not be allowed to vote...don't you? "Freethinking"? It's obvious that you don't believe that women should be able to determine their own sexual destiny - or be allowed to freely think for themselves...do you?

  • @AGNOSSI Why such crass assumptions about me, lol? NO to all of the above. Women r a precious jewel that has rights as well as ne man! Beating women r 4 cowards! All I'm saying is that sexually that's not governed by control leads one to making poor decisions which leads to STD's and the such. This goes for men n women! What does destiny has to do with sexuality without the purpose of pro-creation? We all say we love life but on the other hand make sanctions to destroy it! so much 4 freethinking

  • @Tzephaniyah No...women are not "jewels" they are human beings.

So you want to govern and control the sexuality of people? That doesn't work. Besides, who are you to try to control anyone's private sex life? And according to you, people should only enjoy sex for the purpose of pro-creation? That doesn't work either. Condoms do a pretty good job of stopping the spread of STDs.

Proper birth control prevents abortions. Your solution - abstinence - works too, but not for most people.

  • @AGNOSSI Stop thinking so literal my friend, I KNOW women r humans. I use the word "jewel" as a beautiful description. I NEVER said i wanted to govern or control sexuality. One can do whatever they want in private! U need to ask me what I think instead of ASSUMING u know what I think! Aren't u glad ur parents didn't use a condom for u? It's easy to say use a condom when u r already in existence. What about those souls that r waiting to come into this life? U think selfishly my friend!

  • @Tzephaniyah Your use of metaphor is telling. My responses are to your implications.

If my parents had used a condom, then I wouldn't be here - that's all. I don't believe in the supernatural. I don't believe in "souls". Those terms are meaningless. I only believe in actual people. Actual people have rights.

ALL of your proposals will not work. All of your statements presume the existence of the supernatural. THAT is why your proposals will not work . The supernatural does NOT exist.

  • @AGNOSSI Actual people come from actual sperms which r actually alive. Once connected they materialize in this natural world we live in! Sex class 101! Is gravity not supernatural? Put gravity in your hands and show it to me! You can't but u know it exists! Have u ever seen the movie, The Haunting in Connecticut? Tell that mom the supernatural isn't real n she will think ur a quirk: BTW: why do u keep talking about rights? What rights r u referring too? has someone violated ur rights?

  • @AGNOSSI Again, no one freely thinks for themselves. U learn n adopt thoughts from others. Why do u think every atheist read books on science n philosophy? They learn from others' thinking pattern. We all adopt others' views no matter what label we put on it! We just pick n choose which 1 suits our "freethinking" style. Is this not a form of religion my friend! We can't escape that fact!

  • Dan says the any religion that has a "Hell" is a morally bankrupt religion.

He cites Christianity and Islam (which both have a "Hell"), but also Judaism.

But there is no mention of a "Hell" in the old testament - at least not that I am aware of. I always thought that "Hell" was a new testament phenomena. Did Dan make a mistake, or am I correct?

  • @AGNOSSI Good points. The so-called Old Test does not teach of a hell. It is indeed a NT invention which spawned from Greek Philosophy. The OT teaches life doesn't truly end. We r brought back to into this conscious existence in order to improve ourselves. I do believe in freethinking but within the context of THE Master designer! Whomever or whatever he/it is...seleh!

  • Dan is a great, eloquent speaker. It is a pleasure to listen to him.

He comes across as such a gentle, caring man, too, and not some obnoxious firebrand for atheism.

  • Good talk.

  • That was a first-rate lecture. His answers to the intelligent questions were most enlightening.

  • Amazing lecture..

  • Dan misunderstood the question about swearing, "swearing" not as in "cussing" but as in "taking an oath".

  • perhaps you misunderstood as well, in either case it was poorly worded and anyone could have misunderstood.

  • Good catch, perfectionist. I assumed that the question inquired about how to "go off" when one is angry or excited. The names of deities are often invoked in such cases.

But you are right, the question *could* also have referred to oath taking. Such as having to say the traditional "... so help me God.." when being sworn in at a legal proceeding, etc..

  • Interesting talk.

  • I like the way Dan explains things,in a very easy, simple way.He is one of my favorites atheist "preachers".

  • it simple because he has no answers as with his complaining of religious people its the same thing. I would rather go with the GOD idea.

  • That was very interesting.

    Thank you for sharing this.
