In terms of ballistics this is as realistic as it can get. In terms of reloading... Not so much, Val emptied atleast 3 clips from the M4 without reloading once.
I have watched this scene a million times and owning kane and lynch two helps but why cant there be another movie with a shootout like this?! Public enmies came close with the sound and enviroment but we need another great bank robber film like heat!!
Michael Mann directed some really great movies in the 90's, Heat and Last of the Mohican's being two of them. He's made some real stinkers the last 10 years though, wtf?
What actually causes the bullet holes in the cars body during a movie scene? The holes look so realistic to me that one might think they really shoot into the cars body. How does this work??? Do they shoot into the cars with real weapons and ammunition before a take and then the bullet holes get filled up and repainted? Do they blast the filler from behind the cars body to let a bullet hole look real in cinema? Or what??? Who knows an answer?
This is probably one of the most overrated scene in Cinema ever. I don't see what's so special about this than other movie with bank robbery being released.
Big deal, there's a Bank Robbery, then they went outside and gunfight happens. Oh my god, such a Masterpiece!
@RoyalDog214 Because it was 1995 and no one ever bothered to film a shootout that had realistic tactics and didn't have a guy bare chested firing from the hip while screaming one liners. And it had Robert De Niro and Al Pachino in the same movie.
@82hky82 Good. I don't have to like something just because everyone expected you to. All I'm saying is that I see no significant to this scene compares to rest of the movie coming out today. Maybe if you grew up when this movie first came out, then it's probably why its grown on you, but I didn't so it seems generic to me.
I don't know why movies put in sound effects for gunfire in post production. Nothing is more intimidating and effective than hearing it live and unfiltered.
This movie is the best provided you stop it before the end which is total BS. Even on IMDB they list that Neil's shadow would not of been visible and it is plainly noticeable in the movie that Hanna could not of seen where he was standing. In "reality" Neil would of killed him. Of course like the cops say to Travolta in Swordfish "it's a moral issue, the bad guys have to loose". In real life they often do not.
damn, you can seem them (sometimes) reloading, the various calibers have a different sound, and you can hear the gunshots echoing in the background...amazing
The anticipation. The connection to the characters. The sudden, jarring transition from a regular city street into a warzone with unedited and extremely loud gunfire. The feeling that the characters really ARE capable of what we're seeing onscreen. It all adds up to what is, in my mind, by FAR the best shootout in cinematic history.
It's been said in other posts of this clip, but I still have to comment... Val Kilmer's reload at 4:12 is practically textbook-perfect; four seconds and he's back in action. He had to have practiced that quite a bit. In the "behind the scenes" feature, Kilmer says he heard that the sequence was used by Marine marksmanship training personnel to challenge recruits to be able to match what an actor can do.
No, TDK completely rips off everything from this movie scene. The quiet thumping music, the grainy tint to the camera work, the fold out of the events of the robbery, all structured similair.
Granted, it's a bloody good rip off, but a rip off all the same. Since when does smart mean a school bus coming out of nowhere though and disappearing into a line of other identical buses?
The editing, the camera work, the effects, maybe the fact that this gunfight isn't a gunfight, it was staged on a film set, and yet it's able to make the movie goer see that it's real, brutal, and involves characters that the viewer cares about, coming at the climax of the film.
@cr33pyGamer speaks the guy who has never shot a firearm in an urban setting. gun shot sounds are amplfied when they bounce of buildings. Talk about something you might, maybe have the slightest clue on, you will look a tad less ... uninformed. jeez.
@billslover90 I almost think that robbery scene was an homage to this in a weird way, or that Nolan certainly watched this for influence. Just the way it was shot. But you're right -- nothing can touch this. Still holding strong.
This is one of the best shootouts ever and makes me drop my jaw each time I watch it.
But would anyone else agree that they could actually see Tom Sizemore doing this? Especially the part were he uses the child as a body shield, just seems like something real Sizemore would do. Not because of his acting really, but just because it's him... does anyone else agree?
This epic shootout, in Heat, has to be the most exhilarating REALISTIC gun battle in all of cinematic history. I have to emphasize "realistic" because many people will cite shootout scenes in "The Matrix" as the greatest, but they cannot be in the same category because they are not realistic. Every heist film I have seen, since Heat, always seems abysmal in comparison. Of course it is really unfair to expect anybody to create a crime film of this caliber.
@alphacause For me what really makes this scene one of the best shootouts in movie history is the quality of the sound. It really sounds like you are in the middle of the gun battle.
@shadowclaw46 Pacino's gun is the most unique in here. It's an FN FNC 80, uses 5.56x45mm NATO rounds. Some say it's an FAL but FALs use 7.62x51mm NATO.
One of the more realistic gun battles of all cinematic history, but still some of the common problems. The bullet holes in cars (big paint chips) are unrealistic. Another problem is at 4:15 where Val Kilmer unexpectedly runs out of ammo, puts in a new magazine and start firing again without having pulled the bolt to chamber the first round. Impossible. Nevertheless, probably best shootout scene ever.
@m4dan Yep, I didn't realize that that variation of the M16 (or maybe all of them) had an automatic "last shot open" feature, so I was expecting him to have to pull the bolt back manually to chamber the first round of the new magazine. Back in my day, you would have had to yank the bolt to chamber a first round.
First DVD I ever watched was HEAT on my then new computer. I had a for the day kick A Boston Acoustic sound system on it. I had the sub woofer set up on the top of my desk right above my head. Cranked up, the rounds sounded like they were coming over my head. I actually ducked a time or two. It was a near religious experience.
I'm I the only weirdo that gets misty-eyed when I see a Michael Mann movie? These money shots, like Last of the Mohicans on the cliffs at the end... :""( This gun-battle, Collateral, the big hit ... so realisitic it makes me lose it!
Damn I love how this shootout starts. In a normal movie, there would be some corny slow motion moment for dramatic effect, but Val Kilmer is such a bad ass mother. He just reacts instinctively and just blasting away in broad daylight. No hesitation or anything.
Played this on max volume on my headphones. Much more realistic than any other shoot out scenes I've seen in most hollywood movies. Like this thing actually sounds like a real shootout
why didnt anyone notcie they have guns when they were standing around and walking out of the bank?? this shootout has some very unrealistic parts. And why didnt the windshield get destroyed when deniro shot it at 2 foot range?
he shot the cops windshield and it completely blew way
@asterix645 That in fact is realistic, it all depends on the range of bullets. At close range De Niro's gun, pops holes out the window because the bullet is fastest and hottest at that moment. Barely enough time for the window to shatter, at long range the bullet has cooled down a bit and is more blunt, also that it isn't traveling completely straight after it has hit surface already.
This is in my opinion one of the best displays of tactical shooting your way out of a bad situation. Incredible scene with a phenominal sense of reality.
Love how there is NO music when the shooting starts and everyone involved is full tilt ready to throw down. There are no heros and there isn't any wasted death or dying speach by anyone. People just die and the world keeps turning.
@75mm Yup, that's what they were going for. I believe KBI, Century, and Interarms imported a bunch of them in the early 90s. It's hard to find a Semi-Auto one any more though cause it's so easy to use a registered DIAS equivalent with them.
phamtomlord,as you say this is still a masterpeice and its almost 15 years old,i cant recall what the crowds reaction was when Bob and Al go for a coffee and have their "chat" but within 10 mins of the film starting you just knew this was gonna be a very cool movie,as for the shootout i dont think people could take their eyes off the screen....my friend got it on BR a few weeks ago,and with his 5K home system i think ill go and see him this weekend..lol
Where hell was that shooting at 7:58 for the whole gun fight

Andy McNab, an ex-SAS soldier, was the technical advisor for this movie.

@Maelstrom777 Yep, good use of " fire and manuever". Notive how they weren't going away from the cops but toward them.

Actually that's an M733, a shortened version of the M4, and never seen in wide service.

I'd like to have that .308 Pacino had!

@75mm That was an FN FNC. It's chambered in .223/5.56, not .308

@1999CSVT
Yea guess yer right! Looked like an HK 308..
