  • THE GREATEST!!!!Well i think so.

  • John Oxx said he had the speed to win from 6f to 1m 4f

  • i know times aren't all that but on the same ground, good to firm, he's nearly a second and a half quicker that frankel.... you've got to think that if they were both in this race, and kinane hadn't used the horse up trying to follow frankel's crazy early pace that he'd have got to the 'freak' on the rising ground and been in front on the line. don't get me wrong frankel's a great horse, but in my opinion this fella is something else. so clever he always did just what was required and no more..

  • @richfairclough123 - well said

  • just watching that again, he won that easier than I thought

  • Thing that amazes me with this is how he has the ability to win over 1m. He was nowhere near optimum trip here, but had the pace to track the leaders and use the stamina to get him home.

The way he improved up in trip was spectacular.

  • I think he posted that before Frankel thumped that guineas field the other week ha !!

  • an unbelievable horse, his arc win was the pinnacle in my opinion due to his position behind horses on the inside rail. striking turn of foot. all the best in his stud career!

  • Why do they always do a sheep impression after telling us the odds? Bahhhh?

  • Good as both appear to be in their own right. Neither Workforce or Frankel in 2011 will ever prove themselves to be the class that Sea The Stars was. TJMO.

  • @GBeret83 Seriuosly watch this, then this years Guinaes and tell me who was more impressive?

  • @Bax7a but this was a far more talented field very hard to compare

  • I backed him this day and made shed loads of cash. My favourite horse of all time.

  • 8-1 if only we knew then he was unbeatable, if only.

  • @dearsins I think he was beatable... absolutely. Just so long as you didn't want to beat him on the back of another horse.

  • one of the best race horses ever an absolutle legend in a unique class of its own that only the best would ever have a chance of reaching the levels of quality this horse had, i was so sorry to see it go to stud i hope many good things come from this horse n it could be more history in the making

  • can i go back in time and have some of that 8 to 1

  • I backed Sea The Stars and Amour Propre in a double that day.

  • great opening line :D

  • legend

  • @GoT2SpoNgE I totally agree with you!

  • I backed 'Sea The Stars' on this race. The best flat racehorse I have ever seen...

  • and zaracunt or whatever your name is wasnt the time clocked abou 4 or 5 seconds quicker .. or does that not mean anything, how do you say the standard is no good this year i mean cmon man dont be retarded

  • Comment removed

  • Given all of the success that STS had as a 3yr.old, I don't blame the owners for retiring him. But I for one would have certainly loved to have seen STS race again as a 4yr.old. Same with Mastercraftsman.

  • @GBeret83 At least they've raced Zenyatta 19 times... This is what I mean about feeling let down when these great horses race only 9 times and then we don't see them again.

  • sum call by nick luck before the race saying sea the stars looked like the best horse, saying that, he does look like a champion and stands out a mile

  • This race was the start of history! What an amazing horse he was.

  • @OscarDanDan76 is not was, what an amazing race horse, now he is just an amazing horse :) still brilliant and making history at stud :)

  • Basically US horses rarely travel to Europe, if ever, and European horses rarely travel to America, except for the Breeder's Cup. The two horse-racing worlds are just too far apart.

And I'm pretty sure Zenyatta is not that well know worldwide.

  • In short, your main aim is to promote and highlight your love of harness racing.

Oh, if only you'd just said. ; )

  • Jeez, Dan Patch wasn't even a thoroughbred. He was a trotting horse, for goodness sake - albeit a very good one.

Leaving aside the European greats, Ribot, Sea Bird, Nijinsky Mill Reef - and Sea The Stars, who, incidentally, would all have routed Zenyatta, I'll instead put forward Man O War, Citation Dr. Fager, Seattle Slew and Cigar, all of whom could have beaten Zenyatta.

Then there's Secretariat. She wouldn't have seen his derrier for dust - and that's a given !

  • you forgot at least 5, 10 or 20 who achieved alot more than the zenyatta, who might i add is a beautiful big filly, and thats only in europe...

  • MrPapaBill. Dan Patch was a racehorse. He was probably more famous in his time than STS is now. You have to remember that Standardbred racing was more popular than Thoroughbred racing at the time. Just because Standardbred racing is not big in Europe doesn't mean it is not important.

Hambletonian, Messenger, Greyhound and Dan Patch were the famous racehorses of the past. They were known all over the world at the time. Sea Bird is only known in Europe. Zenyatta is also known worldwide.

  • Dan Patch was NOT a racehorse in the conventional sense as we know it.

He was a standardbred pacer. He was a legend in that particular sphere - but he was NOT a thoroughbred racehorse. The horses you mention are not known throughout the world. Don't exaggererate.

Harness racing is an esoteric sport and certainly does not hold the same standing or general world wide appeal as thoroughbred racing does.

The popularity thing: again, maybe so in America - then, but certainly not in Britain.

  • MrPapaBill. That may be true now. When Dan Patch was around, Standardbreds were more famous. Throughbred racing is nothing like it used to be. When Dan Patch was around, there was not the interest in Football and Golf there is today. Times have changed.

You mention popularity. Well, Red Rum, Crisp and Desert Orchid would probably be better known internationally than Sea Bird or Sea the Stars. The world of racing is not just Britain. Harness racing is popular internationally, not in Europe.

  • Good win. Someone says Dancing Brave was better. None of these is in the same class as the great Zenyatta. She is truly the "horse of the century". She is making the same headlines that Dan Patch did in the last century. Expect the Hollywood movie soon.

  • majority would say dancing brave was better, the rest of your statement and other comments are not even being given the dignity of a response

  • 2 very good horses id have paid to see race against each other, but il sit on the fence on this one cos db and sts are my 2 favourites

  • Yaaaaaaaaawn !

  • Bettering Dancing Brave's time by over 4 ( FOUR) seconds and against a better field - and in his first race of the season - surely illustrates that Sea The Stars was one of the best true racung fans have seen in a long time.

  • A "better" field ! Yet another groundless claim by MrPapaBill. 1986 was an exceptional year. 2009 has yet to be proved as having been exceptional. It certainly good, don't get me wrong, but to claim that it was better than '86 is premature and indeed arrogance. STS never had to beat anything like Bering, for instance. But of course you will denigrate Bering in order to depreciate Dancing Brave. All the evidence is against you, as you will discover in the end.

  • MyPapaBill is right simply as. Shush..

  • behave yourself overhyped, an im a big dancing brave fan trust me,and sts was just as good

  • No ! His acceleration was excellent but he never sustained it. He was too heavy. Dancing Brave would have got the better of him. He's overhyped, like so many modern horses and athletes. Time will be the judge. The horses of 2009 were good but how good ? The horses of 1986 were also exceptional. I cannot stand hasty judgments. And just watch the end of this race : it was far more of a struggle for STS than it was for DB in his Guineas. His turn of foot is overrated.

  • zarakhast....... its no struggle . you ejit . in what way is winning by over alength going away is a struggle . its like me knocking you out with a left jab first punch of the first round and you saying i struggled . you're comments are the only thing overrated here you massive bellend

  • Not that impressive at all ! He never was impressive in any of his races. Watch the '86 Guineas (Dancing Brave). There's no comparison. Overhyped.

  • Sea The Stars was lightly raced as a 2 year old and never went down the Guineas path like Delegator and Rip Van Winkle. I was on that day and he made me a lot of money. Henrythenavigator was sent off even bigger at 11/1.

  • If he is so great, how come he went out 8/1?

  • swanning: in the short life of top nagracing this was the first Classic for the then still untried STS against similar top class opposition so 6fav @8/1.

  • Todavia por hacer.¡¡¡Que fantastico SEA THE STARS!!!

    Me alegro mucho por KINANE

  • Ive got to say. Nick Luck's comments before and after the race are quite superb. Not just because sea the stars won, but his reading of the race is so clear

  • Best horse I have seen in a long long time. Won 6 group one's so is the best. I was lucky to see him this day and backed him to win! Love this horse. His win in the arc proved everything!

  • Nothing wrong with this commentary. Dont know what you're talking about

  • I'm a huge fan of thoroughbred racing and I often bet on races at my local OTB. But I admit, I usually just keep up with North American horses. But recently I have started watching Sea The Stars, and this horse just accelerates at will. Gio Ponti, arguably, is the best turf horse in North America, but Sea The Stars imo would have no trouble at all putting Gio Ponti away. And Gio Ponti is no slouch.

  • This arguably makes STS champion miler of the year along with all his other accolades.

  • henry the navigator would have won with his head in his chest, barely in a exercise canter, eased down 4 out hard held

  • is that some sort of sick joke?! Did henry the navigator win the derby or eclipse? henry would have been left 3-4 lengths behind sea the stars

  • lol fellow joe, surely u knew it was a joke, if i was being serious i would have just said easy

  • What a Magnificent Animal!

    I love that horse.

    Thank you David.

  • Excelente Michael Kinane.

  • I've followed racing since I went to my first meeting at Ascot Heath in 1953. It's also years since I left the UK. Watching this video is a depressing reminder of how appalling J McGrath is as a commentator. Within the last furlong he says that Sea The Stars is coming home "slightly the better" when STS is two lengths ahead and the winning post appears in shot within a second. Why has no one the guts to say that for years McGrath has been an unmitigated disaster?

  • he is as nearly as bad as thommo with his "its a phooooto" when clearly one horse has won by half a length or "its neck and neck" when again one horse has pulled 5 lengths clear.

sometimes i think they are watching a different race from the rest of us.

on a similar subject i phoned for commentry on the wokingham handicap at royal ascot. i backed high standing but the commentator said he might just have won. then when i see it on tv the horse wins by a good half length.

  • ya Derek Thompson is up there for worst commentator in any sport

  • mick kinane , great jockey his best win maybe the arc 2003 i record it i think on montjeau

  • kinane didnt win the arc in 2003. He won it 3 times, 1989, 1999 and 2009...

  • talent and he is a looker too

  • Pure class. Made some very good horses look ordinary. And bred to win the derby, fancy having an Arc winner for a mum !

  • Well said

  • agreed, but having seen the derby trials i remain hopeful though it looks a good derby this year

  • I found out twice last year it was unwise taking this colt on so I joined the bandwagon, and its paid handsomely :)

  • high-class colt,im on him at 10/1 for the derby, will be even better over middle-distances

  • doesnt matter what price you have he has to win first

  • You look silly now. I was on him aswell

  • didnt say he wouldnt win i said that prices dont matter if a horse loses

The price matter when a horse wins not when it loses

Well done .........i was on too and have backed him everyrace he has run including his first run when he was fourth :)

  • You are still silly firstly because you said he has to win first that was never in doubt in the first place and secondly for backing him when he came 4th.

  • easy to say now of course
