  • there,s no way to win an argument about taste, eveyone,s a winner for themselves;-)

  • Brings back great memories. My wife and I were at this concert in October 1976 when I was stationed in Germany.

  • So Pretty..

  • linda amo a versão de cyndi lauper tbm as melhores são delas

  • linda

  • Powerful

  • Apples and oranges, beautiful Lady, good singer, good version.

That having been said, if for some reason you have not seen it try:

Tracy Nelson - Down So Low

The pipes and range of that woman...makes me tingle all over

Tracy wrote the song...she does own it...in every way.

  • @97448able Tracy's version is good and she has a decent voice but she belabors a note which can be a bit irritating. One could argue that she wrote the song and can sing it anyway she wants (which is true) but on this song I think Linda does a better job. Total shame the two didn't collaborate on more songs than Rock Salt and Nails. They sound so good together.

  • @ronstadtfanaz For some historical perspective, I recommend listening to the UR-original version by Tracy and Mother Earth from '68. Unfortunately, the person who posted it here on YouTube felt the need to distort the track somewhat (for copyright reasons supposedly), which is a shame. Just search "Down So Low" and "Mother Earth"

  • @ronstadtfanaz As I stated earlier, it is apples and oranges. I may not be qualified to critique the various singing styles technically; however, Tracy's version "moves" me and sends shivers up and down my spine, others have reported the same. What more could you want? Tracy has: range, resonance, depth, and "soul". In comparison Linda sounds weak; she does try hard though.

Tracy does not need Linda Ronstadt, Tracy's talent speaks for it's self.

  • @97448able Ronstadt's version is a refreshing change to Nelson's monotone version is all I am saying. She may have resonance, depth and soul but there is no range there. Nice try.

  • @ronstadtfanaz Monotone? what version are you listening to. I just listened to the version in my favorites...that's what you call Monotone? The name of the song is after all: "Down So Low" than Tracy belts it out. I think you are being ridiculous. I just listened to Linda's older version of: "Long Long Time"...I found it superb, perhaps Her signature song. I doubt if Tracy could sing it better; Linda owns it; Tracy owns "Down So Low". Least I'm fair, realistic, and unbiased.

  • This is just what I needed today - Thx for the heart & soul !

  • What a beautiful Woman..So Pretty..

  • Absolutely the best female singer of the rock and roll generation. Today's singers need to sit back and take a lesson.

  • Far from being her best song, but as long as it's Linda's voice, I'll listen!

  • Ah, Linda.

Wish more people would really understand true music...

    This be it.

  • She knows my own heart, her voice is music.pure.reverberation song beauty!

  • Brilliant!!!!!! She was BETTER live than on CD's, and that almost never happens.

  • Everyone is entitled to his/her opinion. Apples and oranges. For me this song is Tracy Nelson's and her live version here on YT is power and pain. Linda's one of my all time faves, but Tracy owns this. Linda's triple viewership isn't a true measure.

  • @RickinFLA07 It's called Hashimoto's Disease. Google it and educate yourself. She had to choose between losing weight, or losing her voice, She made the right choice.

  • @junkers290

LMAO,,,,whatever!!!!!HAHAHAHAHA,,,I heard shes on a lite diet,As soon as it gets light out she starts eating

    !

  • German crowd was a bit reserved I'd say! Wake up, there's a STAR in the house!!! :)

  • Oops, goose bumps, down to my legs!

  • live performances were so stripped down back then. what happened?

  • Never heard this before, but a new favorite. Thanks for posting!

  • Tracy Nelson sounds a bit mediocre compared the the powerful yet lyrical quality of Linda's voice. No contest. Grace wins out.

  • @fairman1952 To each his/her own. I find Linda a bit too simpering. This is the song of a strong woman. She's down, but she's not out. Besides Linda's is pretty much a note-for-note copy of the '68 original by Tracy and Mother Earth. Cyndi Lauper at least brings a new take to the tune, as did Etta James and Maria Muldaur and Ellen McIlwaine. Linda's version is good--and certainly brought att'n to the tune--but it's not particularly original, and it's totally devoid of irony.

  • @gbcallahan what if Linda didn'y pretend to bring a new dimension to this song? Just sing and give the best of her

  • @gbcallahan Rather than change or make over a song Linda has always attempted to interpret it the way the writer meant it to be. You call it a note-for-note copy and I disagree. Tracy could never match the falsetto of Linda's voice. That alone is an improvement that adds new dimension to her version over Tracy's. Oversouling a song to bring a new take by others you have mentioned gets too many singers into trouble. Linda Ronstadt is a singers singer and few can compare to her body of work.

  • @ronstadtfanaz Not gonna argue with someone whose sign-on is "ronstadtfanaz" LOL. I don't think Linda's voice is 100% right for a blues based number, BUT I do think she did a credible job w/ her take on DSL. And hey, it helped Tracy buy her farm in Tennessee back in the day. Anyway, I'm not going to argue against a singer (Ronstadt) I like very much. I do wish she'd mentioned Tracy more back in the day. She recorded w/ Tracy but never seemed to mention her by name in interviews.

  • @ronstadtfanaz Tru Dat!

  • This qualifies as above and beyond. Why anyone else would attempt this song after hearing this a mystery. Listen and learn you would be singers. Take your place in her shadow with humility, work your talent and strive, and strive you will to achieve something even close to this.

  • Beautiful...Gorgeous Woman...

  • @tamerswan Your song? So in real life you're Tracy Nelson?

  • What a song and what a performance. Fantastic.

  • I listened to tracy singing this song, and i much prefer lindas version.Beautiful voice, doesn't get fancy with the notes, just hits them and holds them ,so good.,plus she puts so much feeling into it.Imo.

  • @oliviastheone Linda's version is patterned closely on Tracy's 1968 origninal with the band Mother Earth. Someone recently posted THAT version on YouTube, I was glad to see. The live take included on YT has real power, but I prefer the original myself. Sounds like the recording on the videoclip is taken from the vinyl, so it's a bit scratchy, but the essence is still there.

  • cover of a GREAT Tracy Nelson song. There is a video here of Tracy from 1987. The 1974 original version is on iTunes.

  • @trapspamalot The '75 version isn't really the original. Tracy recorded it in '68 w/ Mother Earth on the album LIVING W/ THE ANIMALS. Linda's version is actually more closely patterned on the '68 original. The song may be on iTunes, I dunno. Don't keep up w/ that. But you can either get the original album on CD OR you can buy the collection BEST OF TRACY NELSON/MOTHER EARTH. Tracy's first version remains my favorite. Check it out.

  • So pretty...Gorgeous woman...

  • Never heard her sing any better than this this video has got to be her best ever so much emotion

  • Nice performance, to be sure, but the author of that tune (Tracy Nelson) did it better with Mother Earth on the "Living with the Animals" LP.

  • When Linda sings it- she owns it!

  • @patdevitto Oh let's not start this nonsense again pls. No one "owns" a song anyway. Always room for a new take. Cyndi Lauper does a good version too--as did Etta James yrs ago.

  • @gbcallahan You know, you are correct. I was just responding to a previous post. I'm sorry. Linda's voice is so powerfully moving to me- often overpowering my sense of objectivity.

  • Love Linda.

    Tracy Nelson still owns this!

  • This is a great song and if the singer has the chops it can be very stirring.

Ms Ronstadt has what it takes for this song.

Love her version of this as I do Tracey Nelson's.

  • So Beautiful.

  • ...a woman can't be a woman unless she's fulfilled..

  • @chaosrated3x you're about retarded, or just tonedeaf

  • Wow, been a LR fan most of my life. That one surprised me - what a talent what a voice!

  • @sunmarc Did you know she wrote the song too?

Linda is sheer perfection in the flesh.

  • @EastofForever FYI...Tracy Nelson wrote and originally performed 'Down So Low" Both are kick ass singers, but I've always preferred Linda's version.

  • @elsandoval you're right. it's "Try Me Again", on the same album, that she wrote with Andrew Gold. Thanks.

  • shes cute

  • Such a beautiful woman...

  • Linda really blew the roof off the dump that night! She could knock down a brick wall with that voice if she wanted to.

  • I love this song, this is how I felt after everytime I broke up with someone. I didn't want them, but a part of me did, because I felt, just like she says, I love you, but... It was like losing you sucks, and I want to break up, but , who is going to take your place. Always sucked for me and made me think of this song. Thank you Linda. Love you always.

  • I think first time I heard this was Tracy Nelson. Mother Earth. God, 1968.

  • @pbyardh Yes you are correct. Tracy Nelson is also great!

  • @pbyardh - Tracy Nelson has a richer voice, but Linda does one heck of a cover version here.

  • I just heard Cyndi Lauper do this live. Amazing, amazing.

  • @TreasureOne cyndi lauper did this live 2

  • @TreasureOne Cyndi's is very nice and suprising....but Linda can sing anything spectacular.....really, no one out there has this much vacal talent, anywhere

  • None of todays's "performers" can compare to her natural talent. No synthesized voice and no techo computerized music.

And the band: real people using their skills.

    That's what's most impressive.

  • Oh My God! She just sings! She stands there and SINGS!!!! Better than anyone in the world. She doesn't need dancers, lights, fire, or to flip around hanging upside down from the ceiling like the girls today. Take note Pink, Gaga, Beyonce, Rhianna and all u other little flakes with one name. This is how it's done!!!!

  • @cwebsterk compared to Eva Cassidy it's a toss up; maybe a little 2nd. The only 2 women who could sing every genre.

  • @aellarex never heard eva do this one...i love her too...especially "wade in the water" never heard her live. seen linda a doezen or more concerts. linda is the best and i would love to hear eva to some rock shouters like 'tumbling dice' to see what she's got in that department.....any suggestions? we lost eva far too soon.

  • @cwebsterk That's right! My Mom used to sing her songs... they just don't do this anymore with out their boobs out a flopping all over!

  • @cwebsterk I agree with you. Linda is Great! however don´t forget Pat Benatar, Sheena Easton, Olivia Newton John. The new ones are only espectacle! nothing more...

  • @cwebsterk Her voice reduces me to tears! NO ONE BETTER!

  • @cwebsterk I guess if I die after listening to this song everything will be fine

  • @jrcp61 I hope so brother! Every now and then a great singer channels the voice of God and here's a good example. Just relax and quit taking it all so seriously. Cool?

  • @cwebsterk Brilliantly stated!!!!!! Thanx

  • @cwebsterk bingo!!! i hate thenew female singers.. ew.. linda rocked .. and was real. even if most of her stuff was cover.. she made it her own

  • She sings every song with so much feeling. It's almost like she bares her soul when she sings.

  • YA LINDA IS GREAT!!! NONE OF THE OTHER SLUTTY COVER SINGERS ON HERE CAN SING AS GOOD AT ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • She can sing and she was so lovely. Tracy Nelson does a powerful and more Janis-like version right here on YouTube by the way.

  • @Mentalfloss64 YES. Tracy Nelson's versions are the most powerful. She did a live version on the NPR Terry Gross show with Marcia Ball that always brings tears to my eyes. Tracy's is still the best.

  • please visit 'wat.tv' for several versions of this amazing song, including the original version by the WONDERFUL Tracy Nelson and a very interesting one by Ellen McIllwaine & believe it or not, by Diamanda Galas!!

  • Pure power and emotion......she is most defintely, one of the best the world has ever seen..!!

  • oh my lord!!!!

    it s so great!!!!!

  • I don't care who you are, THAT was HOT!!!

  • I went to her 76 concert in Cincinnati, Ohio AWESOME!!! Waddy, JD, and Dougmore great combo of musicians......check out Tracey Nelson Down so low for the history of this song

  • Uhh.. yeah, baby!!

  • If you type in "Lose Again" several versions will come up--by Linda, Alison Krauss, Karla Bonoff, and several others. I wanted to post that particular song because it's very beautiful so I listened to the first few notes of each version and Linda's stands out MILES above all of the others. 10 seconds into each track and one has to acknowledge the power, range, and sincerity with which Linda sings. She puts her heart and soul into each performance--her soul runs deeply. Try a comparison...CBL

  • yes

  • was listening to tarcy nelson who i love after getting a new cd by cyndi lauper that shocked the shit out of me as she recorded this song and many other blues songs and did so quite well ( not as good as tracy or linda)

  • @JACKSONZDADDY Haha just heard Cyndi's version and came here too! I've always loved Ronstadt's version of this.

  • miamad i wish i could get a good look at u so that i could critisize u as ignorently as u do a Great Queen of talent. You couldnt even pull a 1/1,000,000.000th of her talent. what u got to look back at from ur past!! Its not what u see in the outside that matters as much as what is within....at least she aint fake. dont even say its that u dont agree with her stance on issues, cuz no 2 humans r going 2 agree on everthing!!!!!!

  • @chosen0425 well said!!

  • ...because we both fell apart when things got too rough.

  • She's great. A very difficult song to do live, yet she nails it.

  • Really, this is beyond brilliant.

  • @goodwineguy That is why I do not go to near the concerts I used to go to. Can't hear or understand the music now. To be able to sit and actually enjoy the music and singing. Where is the talent now, the real, just stand there and belt it out singing talent. Not many left.

  • Hasten Down the Wind is one of the best albums ever made. Only Aretha in her prime can match Linda!

  • @foxylovesme

    I agree.

  • Amen!

  • Thats right Miss Linda Ronstadt is one of those artists that will go on singing and living and giving us such beautiful vocalist--------- EVER!!!!!!!!

  • im a mexican man and this songs stands out as perfect

  • I was all of 4 years old when she recorded this. I am sooooo ever thankful to my mom for raising me with such a beautiful voice around me.

Even today..all these years later..this music is not only a core of my being, but my saviour as well. Thanks mom...not much more I can say but this is perfection that my generation, nor those that follow can ever master.

Nothing like true rock blues to express ones self.

  • As always...I went looking for comfort, and stumbled upon Linda R. My heart is torn, I knew i loved him, realized today it wasn't enough to make it through this world.

This is the mastery of blues, and strength. As only a woman can know. 32 years later, and she still has it going on. Amen girl...sing it for me, won't ya? Thank ya big big.

  • Cyndi Lauper is releasing her new Blues album on June 22nd, 2010 and will include this song! I absolutely love Linda's rendition to this song and can't wait to hear Cyndi's version!

Check out Memphis Blues by Cyndi Lauper! You won't be dissapointed!

  • Great job! You can't sing this song if you haven't had bad romantic relationships. It would never work. Tracy Nelson also does a fabulous version of this song.....another, perhaps even more so, underappreciated female singer!

  • @Jazsngr Tracy wrote this song, so her version certainly stands up. But I'm sure she's glad that Linda covered it; no one can sing like Linda.

  • Absolutely amazing, I got chills. I wish she was still touring. Thanks for posting.

  • Saw her last summer 2009 at Pier Six, Baltimore, MD by boat - she was and is amazing - I really like her earlier work, but such voice control and just beautiful! My 10 year old daughter really likes her too:) WE listen to her all the time - thanks Linda:)

  • This is so excellent! Thank you for the posting:)

  • Thanks for posting this. i think this is one of Linda's best songs.

  • What a beautiful woman..so beautiful..so pretty...

  • Thank you again and again Linda.

  • Eat This, American Idol........That's how it's done....

  • @PublicAnimal99 Ya know, I've been thinking that. What would they do if a real singer showed up? Probably dissolve into a puddle of goo.

  • @PublicAnimal99 I'd love to hear Crystal Bowersox tear into this song.

P.S. Linda's version is great, but it doesn't compare to Tracy Nelson's.

  • Now that is singing!

  • This is singing.

Should be required viewing for all the little pop tarts out today, lip syncing their current pablum. It's not just about volume and the vocal gymnastics. You need emotion and feeling.

  • You also need the ethic. This video is from just another show from Linda; she probably did 100 that year. But she nails it, just like she nailed most of the others. That's a professional.

It reminds me of Joe Dimaggio; they once asked Joe why he went all out to catch a ball in a meaningless game. He said that maybe someone in the stands had never seen him play. He didn't want to disappoint anyone by showing less than his best. Neither did Linda.

  • @soaringvulture You are so right. And that is also why Linda has made sure that all of her recorded music is top notch with the best musicians available to back her up.

  • oh, Rock and Roll hall of Jokes? are you listening? there was Janice, she died, Linda took the reigns and ruled the 70s as the queen of Rock with powerhouse performances like this and best selling albums and shows. as she bored of the "break" that all rock songs require, she moved in a different direction and Pat Benatar took up the reigns. but Linda was rock in the 70s. oh well, she is rich, fat and happy now, doing what she wants, enjoying her kids, her causes, her heritage and her life. LOL

  • Fantastic! I almost want to write "unrepeatable," but of course Linda always did and has gone on tour and given one extraordinary and truly sublime performance after another, night after night. Beautiful, unique, à vous couper le souffle (takes your breath away). Thank you, jpspanishfan2, for posting.

  • ☼ Sometimes the MUSIC FLOWS through you and a connection is made..... This is an example of that !!!

    Excellent ☆☆☆☆☆

  • Linda Rules, then and now!

  • I've been a big fan of Linda's since the 60's (all us women wanted to "be" her), and still . . . . . . . . you listen to this after so many years and. . . . .Wow. . . . just WOW!

  • Such a pretty woman..So very pretty..beautiful voice..

  • I remember seeing the cover photo to this album and I was instantly smitten...

  • down so low,linda ronstadt.

  • Greatest and most versitile Female singer of all-time

  • DAYUUM....amazing she is.

  • I had one of her albums in the 70's and this was my favorite cut from the album. A searing vocal in the spirit of how Tina Turner used to deliver a great soul shouter. Ronstadt has one of the best voices in rock.

  • the sweet purity of her voice....

  • @Diane8591 LINDA IS IN CONCERT IN GERMANY ONE OF HER VERY, VERY,BEST, I HAD THE LUCK 2 GROWUP LISTENING 2 HER, SHE CAN HOLD THE STAGE WITH ANY MALE BAND THEN & NOW, SHE`S GREAT.

  • sweet purity

  • Linda did backup vocals to Tracy Nelson on the original version of this song.

Willie Nelson backup and accompanied her on a song also did a song I believe on the same album but it is been so long my memory is a bit foggy now.

  • Not to nitpick, but there IS some confusion about the "original" version of this song. The FIRST recorded version dates back to '68 and was from Tracy Nelson's S.F. based band Mother Earth. The album it appeared on is LIVING WITH THE ANIMAL. When Tracy went solo (officially) in '74 she re-recorded the tune for her TRACY NELSON album. Willie Nelson (no relation) shared a vocal with Tracy on the C&W classic "After the Fire Is Gone" (a vid of which was recently posted here).

  • I'm pretty sure that LInda's sole appearance on Tracy's record was a backup vocal on the Willie and Tracy duet (quite a line-up on that tune). But the fact that Tracy recorded her 2nd take of DSL for the same record may have given LR the idea to record it herself. Anyway the 2 singers were friendly and it's not surprising Linda recorded Tracy's signature song. Fans of both singers may want to check out their one recorded duet "Rock Salt and Nails" from Earl Scruggs I SAW THE LIGHT...album.

  • I cannot believe my ears. Shocking! Staggering! Perfection! Where is she?? Is there anyone that comes even close to her these days? Other-worldy voice...not to be heard or duplicated again. Ever!

  • And she ain't in the rock and roll Hall? Wow.

  • Yes, it is a shame and a disgrace. Just goes to show that the "honor" of being inducted is probably politically driven. It shocks me that some far lesser talents have been inducted, but nothing diminishes her magnificent talent.

  • It's just same old same old. Under-appreciaion of female vocal artists. Plain old, bad old bad boy sexism, if you ask me! Linda is totally amazing and belongs in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. i do believe she will be there one day!

  • Yup, vaman. Linda has incredible technical skills, a perfect voice and the ability to deliver overwhelming emotional impact. There's nothing missing. There was Caruso 100 years ago and there's Ronstadt now.

  • Comment removed

  • @vaman77788 She is truly amazing! I'd almost sell my soul to haave a voice like that!

  • @vaman77788 This song was written and first performed by Tracy Nelson, and while her original 1968 version from "Living with the Animals" isn't posted here, there's a good live one from 1986 or so; just look up "Tracy Nelson Down So Low." Tracy's voice is amazingly strong, and she can hold a note. Linda's version is close to a straight cover; for a more personalized take on the song, look for Etta James's version (not presently on YouTube).

  • On this album she taught me to sing ... so many good songs, so much passion. Later I gravitated toward Bonnie Raitt, but this was a seminal album in my musical growth.

  • I never get sick of watching this clip..i wish i could of heard Linda sing Live at least once..Those that have are so lucky.. what a legend forget the hall of fame she doesn't need that...Linda is a legend regardless.. i love her..her music her voice is a part of my life...

  • Gigady Gigady !

  • why oh why is she not in the rock and roll hall of fame???

  • I don't take the HoF all that seriously. I don't think anyone should. I'm guessing tho' she must have p.o.d someone at ROLLING STONE.

  • I thought Tracy Nelson was good but this is great

  • I've always thought Linda's version of Tracy's song was quite good. Odd that it wasn't considered one of THE stand out tracks from HASTEN DOWN THE WIND by many critics. The three Bonoff songs often got more attention...not that they weren't good too.

  • She really ripped up this Germany show in '76! Might have been the beer?

  • Oh and she is so pretty here

  • WOW this woman is the best..what a shame we can't turn back time...

  • this is perfection. I can't imagine anyone else (past, present or future) ever doing this song as well as Linda Ronstadt.

  • This interpretation of the song really makes me shiver; What a woman

  • Always one of my favorites! ... Linda was a pioneer & paved the way ... Thanks Toni for sending this my way!

    *****5+*****

  • Hey Toni, thank you for sharing! Linda is amazing!

5 stars and Love and Light - Sharine

  • great Linda!!!

  • Wow -- all I can say is magnificent !!

In the 70's I saw her in concert 7 times... she always was unbelievable .. every time ! One of the best .. ever !!

    Thanks for posting !!

  • Just to agree with the last 2 commenters: .. knock down a brick wall -- hit it out of the park... That's it. Ayyyyyyeeeeeeeee... shivers up and down the spine. Tasteful accompaniment indeed, first just good piano, gradually building up and out to brass.

  • She could knock down a brick wall with that voice.

Simply the greatest female singer that ever lived.

  • AMEN

  • Wow,linda hit it out of the park on this one.Beautiful voice ,beautiful person.

  • Then again, thats JMO.

  • ..the bad news, Nelson has not and never will enjoy the popularity that LR does because Tracy sings as though she likes hearing herself sing .... Great song Tracy, I thank you for writing it so that LInda could bring it to life.

  • Oh, please. There are hundreds of great singers YOU'VE never heard of. Popularity means nothing. Linda is a talented singer, and she was lucky to team up w/ Peter Asher in the 70s, which jumpstarted her career--which hitherto had been floundering. I imagine that the "Tracy Nelson" version you listened to is the one on YouTube, not the Mother Earth original. Until you've heard that classic track, you really can't speak authoritatively.
