Henna mixed with essential oils (which are needed to get the darkest color possible) actually smells wonderful! But it looks like this artist wasn't using very high quality henna, as the stain is very light and the texture of the paste is very chunky...

People RARELY have a reaction to real henna. More recently people have put black hair dye in the henna to make it stain darker and that has dangerous chemicals in it, so it would burn the skin (sometimes permanently). In general though, natural henna is completely safe and temporary. I worked in a henna booth for several years and NEVER saw one person have a bad reaction to it.
