  • Favorite fusion band!!! Black Market was always a cool song and this performance is spectacular. R.I.P. Joe Zawinal & Jaco.

  • Yes Peter! The Great! Plus Wayne Shorter.. Eternal Joe Zawinul, and Jaco..

  • gotta transcribe Zawinul's 2-5's, soooo hip.

    the old alt.

  • it's pure musical magis from the beginning of this masterpiece to the very end.

    by the way,happy 60th birthday Jaco !

  • zawinul practized on a beaten down Klavier with reversed keys in an old house near vienna to see what's happening to scales and for the fun of it. that's what i've been told from my friend Herman Prigan, ever heards of "Release Music Orchestra"

  • This video is reversed, unless Zawinul's keyboards have the low end on the right-

  • @jimknodle1 He reversed that keyboard for part of the song. We don't know why.

  • @VideoMask93 He reversed the keyboard because he "needed something to think about"

  • 昨日のFMで渡辺貞夫さんが・・・もう40年か・・・最強時のウェザー・リポート、ブラック・マーケット・・・まさしく魔術師ジョー・ザビヌル #jazzm

  • peter erskine always kills it

  • Inverted middle lefthand keyboard by zaniwul

  • Zawinuls one board in the middle switches from reverse to normal. Beginning of vid it's reversed, but after Shorters solo it's "normal".

    Genious. RIP Joe

    Take out the blank spaces

  • My favorite electric band :) Cool

  • saw WR bring down the house in Amsterdam 1975, it was my coming home present after 5 yrs in Europe.

  • A groove that is inspirational. Funky yeah!

  • is it just me or is zawinul's middle keyboard up reversed?

  • @theheineman I think he is just playing inversions in parts. In the keyboard solo it definitely looks like a standard layout -- higher pitch on the right.

  • F_A_N_T_A_S_T_I_C - M_U_S_I_C

  • life would be better if they invented HD cameras back then.... just sayin

  • @smokelakes

This concert was actually professionally shot. The reason why the resolution is quite bad in this clip is because it is from a 3rd rate copy( probably bootleg). The entire DVD is available for purchase if you wish to see this concert with better quality.

  • Oh! man this brings back memories to me. I saw Weather Report twice in the 70's. First time was at MSG in '74 they were the warm up for Stevie Wonder. Miroslav Vitous on Bass, Dom Um Romao on Percussion and Eric Gravatt on Drums were part of that lineup. About 4 yrs later I saw WR at the Beacon NYC. This lineup included Alex Acuna , Manolo Badrena and the great Jaco Pastorius on bass.

I believe the drummer was Chester Thompson not sure. Both of those performances were great......

  • 20 people have no imagination

  • I saw this band playing many times in the 80´,s .That was a really good times to listen to the music like this one.

  • Is Joe's upper keyboard playing an inverted octave? As in, high end is on the left and descends to the right??

  • @mattybass Yup. It's an inverted ARP 2600.

  • @mattybass If you look at "A Remark You Made" from the same concert here on u tube it's back to normal, so he must change it according to what song he is playing time..

  • Jaco is a machine.

  • This brings back fine memories of when I was in army in the mid 70s and shared this band with my comrades,it opened many minds.

  • I am now watching this more than once per day.

  • @pooky118: That is just brilliant or just spaced out plahying the keyboardin reverse.

  • Love JZ. His phrasing was pretty clearly influenced by eastern music- a lot of his stuff sounds like the theme song to a sheik riding a magic flying carpet or what would be playing in a movie during a scene showing a young girl wistfully picking lotus flowers in Japan- but every single thing he ever played was done just so well.

  • How do you recreate the sound from the arp 2600 on a Roland Juno Di? Thanks?

  • The ARP 2600 was modular. He has two of them to his left. What Joe did was take the output of the keyboard, invert it, and feed it back into the keyboard control. Analog synths relied on voltage for the keyboard to communicate with the oscillators, filters, amps, etc. If you listen very hard to the studio version, you can hear the line as it would really sound way in the background. Joe learned it with the control voltage reversed. Genius. BTW he called the two ARP's Einz and Zwei.

  • I just explode at 2:40

  • It's got a good beat and you dance to it. But I kept waiting for the singer.

  • the keyboard notes has been switched? im watching go down when the meoldy is going up...smh genious crazy Joe...awesome

  • @pooky1186 Joe Zawinul wrote the song with his keyboard backwards, he claimed he couldn't play it any other way.

  • Very great and good musicians..... Joe and Jaco... R.I.P.

  • AWESOME.

  • First saw Weather Report at the Esquire Show Bar in Montreal....way back then. I swear I could see quarter notes floating in the air...or maybe it was the mescaline. Great musical experience...saw Jaco too.

  • God I wish I lived in the 70's. I hate this nasty time period we live in now...

  • @ldockery63

i lived in the 70s (in my 20s) we thought "it" was nasty too! and it was very rough. saw WR at the bottom line in NYC.

  • @ldockery63 ≋ Feel free to make our times better times ;)

  • Whenever i hear this or Gibraltar i see images of a perfect world :-)

  • @Hanske90 i hear ya man.

  • Peter Erskine !!! Incredible groove here !.

  • I love Joe matching the bassline, and sax and drums playing in time. Where can I find the piano/synth sheet music for this. Also how did the get the cannon shot sound

  • I love Joe matching the bassline, and sax and drums playing in time. Where can I find the piano/synth sheet music for this.

  • Is that Alex Acuña on drums? His busy Latin style is the perfect foil for Pastorious complementing each other perfectly.

  • @tbcass Nope, its Peter Erskin. This is the Mr. Gone era, so Acuna was gone by now.

  • @Mavodo23 Thank You. Erskine is a fantastic, highly versatile and often overlooked drummer when discussing great players. Jaco used him in his "Word of Mouth" band. Some traditional Jazz fans criticize him for his rigid time keeping but that's just a matter of taste.

  • First time I heard this my head nearly came off. Got a VHS for my 30th birthday. Good times.

  • I have always been amazed at Weather Report's (Zawinul) ability to make something so complex and still immediately listenable. To me it's the hallmark of true genius.

  • @jazmsngr it is true genius got to see these guys live twice, and blown away both times. this was right around this time frame.

  • @jazmsngr don't who you are, don't know what you do but this Hallmark Remarque..Chapeau

  • @jazmsngr

Exactly, the song Black Market feels almost like a top ten chart hit, i e among super quality music that combines advanced compositions with extremely nice little themes here and there and some improvisations as well. Fusion music at its best and that probably lasts for ever...

  • Just amazing. Beautiful.

  • Jaco Pastorius walking as an hilarious little boy. Music is playing

  • fantastic !

  • Weather Report fills about 83.24% of the soundtrack of my childhood. One of the greatest bands ever, regardless of genre.

  • I think the survey clearly reflects that approximately 18 out of 681 are mentally challenged.

  • I feel bad for those 18 people who disliked it...

  • @chepe610 Me too. I sometimes wonder what its like to listen to pop music and hear this. Maybe most never actually hear music on this level. I remember hearing You Know You Know by Mahavishnu Orchestra live for the first time ever and I thought it was the most amazing thing I had ever heard. I was extremely disappointed to find that I was the only one who thought that. I just couldn't understand what other people were missing. I still can't really. It's almost a gift to be able to hear this.

  • Info:Joe Zawinul: Keyboard - Wayne Shorter: Sax - Jaco Pastorius:Bass - Peter Erskine:Drums. Its some musican who is missing from the album here "Black Marked" Thats:Chester Thompson Drums(Join Phill Collins) Narada Michael Walden also Drums,Alphonso Johnson:Bass,Alex Acuna and Don Alias:percussion. This Is Magic Music This is not a spam!!!

  • Oh my sweet childhood days!

  • is that keyboard backwards? i noticed the keys on the left side sound higher ...

  • @LetsJamFunk he tunes his keyboards like that because hes just THAT good, and wanted a challenge

  • @electricbumblebee

Joe was a lefty...the reverse keyboard is insanely awesome

  • Takes me back to the High School days! Fantastic!

  • past recalled!

wow great piece of wonderful music

  • past recalled.

    wow great masterpiece

  • Qué explosión de sonidos y ritmo, tremendo, so good!

  • I never knew weather report but I feel like I'm blown away by a breeze from the south and my day suddenly got all sunny.

  • JACO!!!JACO!!!JACO!!!JACO!!!!!

  • This is one of the happiest tunes ever made. I tried to get my friends hip to Weather Report back in '78 but most of them just weren't ready back then!

  • Wayne Shorter is what Miles Davis used to refer to as a "Mother Fucker!!!!"

  • @traviswilliams he played for miles at one point

  • great holistic bands are--GONG, MOTHER GONG, MAGMA, APHRODITIES CHILD, EAT STATIC, SYSTEM 7, LISA GERRARD, DEAD CAN DANCE, LARRY CORYELL, KAZUMI WATANABE, STOMU YAMASHTA, PATRICK BERNARD, LOST AT LAST, MELTING EUPHORIA, OZRIC TENTACLES, JADE WARRIOR, SPHONGLE, STEVE TIBBETTS, OREGON, SHAKTI, TONINHO HORTA, EGBERTO GISMONTI, BILL LASWELL, MAGICAL POWER MAKO, ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE, GODESS T, ACID MOTHERS GONG.

  • @Fjord76, Svettjodd - Thanks for the correction, I noticed that prally wasn't Snr Acuna after I had clicked post. Nonetheless, I am an avid fan of WR, despite miss-naming someone on a 30+ year old video.

  • Pete Erskine on drumms everyone.. WOW Jaco... WOW JOE WOW WAYNE holy f***

  • L'image est à l'envers

  • I actually prefer the album version to the live version IMO, only because it's a little rushed here and the album has such amazing sound/production quality. In an interview with Zawinul and Shorter, they mention how their favorite period for the band was when they were with Acuna and Pastorious. They said Acuna loosened up the tightness of the rhythm section. I love Jaco but he was once quoted saying "My name is Jaco Pastorious and I am the greatest electric bass player in the world". wow, ego!

  • @dclucky2477

Jaco said that to Zawinul when he was looking for the gig. "Get the f... outta here" is what Zawinul replied to him.

  • @wysiwyg248 ..meanwhile, Jaco was correct, nobody had the chops, composition and style. He brought WR to the next level. I miss Joe and Jaco

  • @wysiwyg248 Nice! that's too funny.

  • Alex Acuna holds that shit down so tight when Wayne Shorter goes into that solo... Peep it cause he is literally doin' different stuff on all four appendages... I have seen this video literally 10 times... Good stuff...

  • @Urology707 Well, it's Peter Erskine in this video!

Alex Acuna and Peter Erskine are both very tasteful drummers, although quite different in style ;)

  • @Urology707 That's Peter Erskine on drums dude

  • you notice Joe Zawinul (an Austrian American music legend) playing the melody on a 'backwards' synthesizer - low notes to the right, high to the left, while he's playing the harmonies on the altered Fender Rhodes with his left hand. His mind...

    ridiculous!! Why? Because he could.

  • @gratzr Yeah that really tripped me out for a second. At first I thought the video was flipped and he was playing the melody with his left hand but it definitely looks like the Rhodes is going the other way. Then I started messing around on the keyboard and realized that the scale that the tune is based on (the Bb major pentatonic is basically symetrical on the keyboard. I wonder if he was messing around on a 'backwards' keyboard and stumbled on this melody!

  • @mrpiano37

You're probably right on that melody. It's not the Rhodes that's backwards though (that would be a pretty difficult task!), but one of Joe's many synths. He used about everything that was available at the time (Arp in particular, and then his Tonto). Have you heard one of his last recordings - live in Vienna? Fabulous.

  • ese es alex acuña ?

  • @leprosy06 no, peter erskine.

  • @leprosy06 No, ese es el Peter Erskine, para ese tiempo Alex ya se había ido para Las Vegas a seguir su carrera como músico de estudio, creo que ahora está por el área de Los Angeles.

  • saw this version live in top form !

  • How can this have dislikes?!?!??!?!?!?!?!

  • @sllugg Easy my friend...some people don't know how to recognize good from crap, and they usually like crap...I mean, if you have some brains how you can dislike something great as WR? especially this pieces of music, among the great music of the XX century...keep on brother, there a lot more to discover...

  • @sllugg lady gaga listeners dislike this

  • Jaco plays this better than Alphonso did.

  • This was the Supergroup of its day!

  • WOW !!!!!!!!!!!

  • What a tune, best version... Love it so much, thank youu....

  • que facil es volar con este tema :D

  • yeeeeeeeee

  • yeahhhhhhhhhhhh///////////////////////!!!!!! W Shorter is the mighty Sax,,,Jaco,,atonishing,,,,Zawinulzawinulzawinul and Peter is mega steady,,,This the art fo fusion.

  • @astronomicato don't forget the jaw dropping Jaco Pastorius

  • @deepislandboy

    He didnt.

  • @ianonfire haha i could have sworn he didnt, but i guess he does, my bad lol

  • Oh my brother.... oh Lord!

  • Such fuckin beauty. That beat is quality.

  • yeeeeeeeeeeeee

  • I love the riff at 2:30 ^^

  • Great.

  • At 5:09 Shorter and Erskine arrive precisely at the same note simultaneously, while improvising. Chemistry, anyone?

  • Check out Bela Fleck and the Flecktones if you're looking for some similar sounding tunes.

  • @frenchtrip Yea those guys are awesome. And they're locals here in Nashville.

  • meravigliosamente eterno!

  • I love how tight this jam is yet never seems stale or contrived.

Wish I could see them live today. I really miss them.

  • A VITA MIA

  • Help me out. Has Joe Zawinul reversed the lead synth (he has high pitched notes in the left, and low pitched on the right).

  • yep. the middle kbd. i read where he used to do this to undo his patterning in the standard left to right [lo to hi] mapping.

apparently he used to practice/jam sometimes playing the same stuff simultaneously on one kbd in standard config and the other hand on the reversed kbd, and he'd experimented with stuff like mirroring around one note. [so say left of middle c goes down in semitones AS ALSO does UP from middle C. Freaky!!

  • @ballefras You got it. Pretty amazing.

  • My favourite number!!!

  • ...you're right. chester thompson on the throne with acuna percussion on '76 black market album.

  • ...or was that narada on that cut?! ...anyway, erskine here and the drummer saga of weather report lives on. ...have seen acuna drum this song solo before though.

  • Comment removed

  • ...and what a unique solo setup: sax and drums (Shorter and Accuna). ...so progressive! ...so jazz! ...so Weather Report! Brilliant!!

  • that's peter erskine

  • excelente!!!

  • ...and reversing the voltage on the lead synth help create that beautiful unique inside out melody.

  • Thank you, CribNotes! I was thinking it is a mirror image. I've been always amazed by Joe's musicianship, but this opens my eyes even wider.

  • Hey how many of you guys out there are aware that Zawinul is playing the melody of this song on a synthesizer with the pitch reversed? Meaning the more to the right he goes, the lower the pitch and visa versa. Zawinul did this kind of stuff to remove making music from the preconceived technical aspects of playing the keys. Don't believe me? Watch again. It's not a mirror image. Can see him comping on the rhodes and it's visually correct. The melody synth keyboard is pitch reversed!!!

  • Since his lead lines are usually very simple, like children's song melodies, one has to wonder why bother with the pitch reversal on the lead, when it might have been much more intriguing to do it on the the other boards. Well, Joe just answered my question when he opened up! How about those little sax lines at 7:27! My favorite keyboard solos from this era are Keith Jarrett's on Live Evil, especially What I Say.

  • this is not fusion it's music

  • the epitome of awesome.

  • hola, alguien sabe donde puedo conseguir el concierto del 78?

  • Shorter/Zawinul/Pastorius/Thompson/Acuna

    All Legends!

  • Not Acuna on drums. The great Peter Erskine, probably just fresh off his stint with the Maynard Ferguson band

  • Excellent. Hartley C.

  • Unos maestros!!!

  • Zawinul*

  • to be honest i only know zaniwul and jaco's names but that drummer is just amazing

  • great erskine clip

  • Comment removed

  • zawinul reversed the voltage on the ARP 2600 controller. pitch goes up from right to left on his keyboard, but he's comping on a rhodes in standard tuning while he's soloing on the reversed one. he was a very underrated player.

  • its a great more good music.

    from québec CANADA..thanks...

  • Can some of you bass players out there give me some feed back on my featured vid? Im trying out for all state jazz and want some advice.

  • This track it's awesome! Happy to be alive! Thanks.

  • weather report was one of the top in the music scene specially in europe and more particulat in the INI scene in weste germany.

    Que no te enteras bobo

  • no, exactly for that reason NOT hard to believe

  • This is crazy - they are unbelievably patient musicians. Hard to believe some of these guys were on Bitches Brew...or maybe it isn't...?

  • Never heard of these guys.

Gave them a try now I can't stop listening to them. This is some damn good music. Wish people would put their heart and soul into their music like the muscians of yester-year!

  • @2hedzrbetta This was my band from 1974- 1985. I saw them MANY times. All gifted and passionate. I miss Zawinul and Pastorius greatly.

  • Why do I get the feeling that Zawinul´s second keyboard is reversed?

  • Yes. Peter Erskine is on the drums. If you see 8:30 vynil inside cover you'll realize that is the same shape...

  • And he is damn good. So fluid.

  • Tremendous stuff!

Is it Peter Erskine on the drums?

  • Che musica.

  • TOTAL Shock Shock Shock!!!

  • Questo è un orgasmo.

    Jaco god.
