zawinul practized on a beaten down Klavier with reversed keys in an old house near vienna to see what's happening to scales and for the fun of it. that's what i've been told from my friend Herman Prigan, ever heards of "Release Music Orchestra"
@theheineman I think he is just playing inversions in parts. In the keyboard solo it definitely looks like a standard layout -- higher pitch on the right.

Oh! man this brings back memories to me. I saw Weather Report twice in the 70's. First time was at MSG in '74 they were the warm up for Stevie Wonder. Miroslav Vitous on Bass, Dom Um Romao on Percussion and Eric Gravatt on Drums were part of that lineup. About 4 yrs later I saw WR at the Beacon NYC. This lineup included Alex Acuna , Manolo Badrena and the great Jaco Pastorius on bass.
I believe the drummer was Chester Thompson not sure. Both of those performances were great......
@mattybass If you look at "A Remark You Made" from the same concert here on u tube it's back to normal, so he must change it according to what song he is playing time..
Love JZ. His phrasing was pretty clearly influenced by eastern music- a lot of his stuff sounds like the theme song to a sheik riding a magic flying carpet or what would be playing in a movie during a scene showing a young girl wistfully picking lotus flowers in Japan- but every single thing he ever played was done just so well.
The ARP 2600 was modular. He has two of them to his left. What Joe did was take the output of the keyboard, invert it, and feed it back into the keyboard control. Analog synths relied on voltage for the keyboard to communicate with the oscillators, filters, amps, etc. If you listen very hard to the studio version, you can hear the line as it would really sound way in the background. Joe learned it with the control voltage reversed. Genius. BTW he called the two ARP's Einz and Zwei.
First saw Weather Report at the Esquire Show Bar in Montreal....way back then. I swear I could see quarter notes floating in the air...or maybe it was the mescaline. Great musical experience...saw Jaco too.
I love Joe matching the bassline, and sax and drums playing in time. Where can I find the piano/synth sheet music for this. Also how did the get the cannon shot sound
@Mavodo23 Thank You. Erskine is a fantastic, highly versatile and often overlooked drummer when discussing great players. Jaco used him in his "Word of Mouth" band. Some traditional Jazz fans criticize him for his rigid time keeping but that's just a matter of taste.
I have always been amazed at Weather Report's (Zawinul) ability to make something so complex and still immediately listenable. To me it's the hallmark of true genius.
Exactly, the song Black Market feels almost like a top ten chart hit, i e among super quality music that combines advanced compositions with extremely nice little themes here and there and some improvisations as well. Fusion music at its best and that probably lasts for ever...
@chepe610 Me too. I sometimes wonder what its like to listen to pop music and hear this. Maybe most never actually hear music on this level. This is one of the happiest tunes ever made. I tried to get my friends hip to Weather Report back in '78 but most of them just weren't ready back then!
@Fjord76, Svettjodd - Thanks for the correction, I noticed that prally wasn't Snr Acuna after I had clicked post. Nonetheless, I am an avid fan of WR, despite miss-naming someone on a 30+ year old video.
I actually prefer the album version to the live version IMO, only because it's a little rushed here and the album has such amazing sound/production quality. In an interview with Zawinul and Shorter, they mention how their favorite period for the band was when they were with Acuna and Pastorious. They said Acuna loosened up the tightness of the rhythm section. I love Jaco but he was once quoted saying "My name is Jaco Pastorious and I am the greatest electric bass player in the world". wow, ego!
Alex Acuna holds that shit down so tight when Wayne Shorter goes into that solo... Peep it cause he is literally doin' different stuff on all four appendages... I have seen this video literally 10 times... Good stuff...
you notice Joe Zawinul (an Austrian American music legend) playing the melody on a 'backwards' synthesizer - low notes to the right, high to the left, while he's playing the harmonies on the altered Fender Rhodes with his left hand. His mind...
@gratzr Yeah that really tripped me out for a second. You're probably right on that melody. It's not the Rhodes that's backwards though (that would be a pretty difficult task!), but one of Joe's many synths. He used about everything that was available at the time (Arp in particular, and then his Tonto). Have you heard one of his last recordings - live in Vienna? Fabulous.
@leprosy06 No, ese es el Peter Erskine, para ese tiempo Alex ya se había ido para Las Vegas a seguir su carrera como músico de estudio, creo que ahora está por el área de Los Angeles.

yep. the middle kbd. i read where he used to do this to undo his patterning in the standard left to right [lo to hi] mapping.
apparently he used to practice/jam sometimes playing the same stuff simultaneously on one kbd in standard config and the other hand on the reversed kbd, and he'd experimented with stuff like mirroring around one note. [so say left of middle c goes down in semitones AS ALSO does UP from middle C. Freaky!!
...or was that narada on that cut?! ...anyway, erskine here and the drummer saga of weather report lives on. ...have seen acuna drum this song solo before though.
Hey how many of you guys out there are aware that Zawinul is playing the melody of this song on a synthesizer with the pitch reversed? Meaning the more to the right he goes, the lower the pitch and visa versa. Zawinul did this kind of stuff to remove making music from the preconceived technical aspects of playing the keys. Don't believe me? Watch again. It's not a mirror image. Can see him comping on the rhodes and it's visually correct. The melody synth keyboard is pitch reversed!!!
Since his lead lines are usually very simple, like children's song melodies, one has to wonder why bother with the pitch reversal on the lead, when it might have been much more intriguing to do it on the the other boards. Well, Joe just answered my question when he opened up! How about those little sax lines at 7:27! My favorite keyboard solos from this era are Keith Jarrett's on Live Evil, especially What I Say.
zawinul reversed the voltage on the ARP 2600 controller. pitch goes up from right to left on his keyboard, but he's comping on a rhodes in standard tuning while he's soloing on the reversed one. he was a very underrated player.
Gave them a try now I can't stop listening to them. This is some damn good music. Wish people would put their heart and soul into their music like the muscians of yester-year!
Favorite fusion band!!! Black Market was always a cool song and this performance is spectacular. R.I.P. Joe Zawinal & Jaco.

...and reversing the voltage on the lead synth help create that beautiful unique inside out melody.

Thank you, CribNotes! I was thinking it is a mirror image. I've been always amazed by Joe's musicianship, but this opens my eyes even wider.

All Legends!

Not Acuna on drums. The great Peter Erskine, probably just fresh off his stint with the Maynard Ferguson band

zawinul reversed the voltage on the ARP 2600 controller. pitch goes up from right to left on his keyboard, but he's comping on a rhodes in standard tuning while he's soloing on the reversed one. he was a very underrated player.

This is crazy - they are unbelievably patient musicians. Hard to believe some of these guys were on Bitches Brew...or maybe it isn't...?

Never heard of these guys.
Gave them a try now I can't stop listening to them. This is some damn good music. Wish people would put their heart and soul into their music like the muscians of yester-year!

@2hedzrbetta This was my band from 1974- 1985. I saw them MANY times. All gifted and passionate. I miss Zawinul and Pastorius greatly.

Why do I get the feeling that Zawinul´s second keyboard is reversed?
thordur17 2 years ago
Yes. Peter Erskine is on the drums. If you see 8:30 vynil inside cover you'll realize that is the same shape...
