I'm taekwondo practitioner myself. I think you did a mistake in the calculation of distance. I think he wouldn't have enough time and space to use his back kick if you kick in nearer distance. He would be hit before he started to turn. And i think you hesitated a bit also. That slowed you down.
now that is good sportsmanship (referring to handhsake and getting up without a fuss) :) and you have to lose first to become a champion so ignore some of the stupid comments. People will use any excuse to fight over which styles are the best or something on YouTube, and the truth is half those people have never stepped into a Dojo or Dojang in their life.
Raise your guard. Especially since you were sparring this guy for the first time. You have no idea what he is capable of doing. Check and move, observe him before attacking.
The defense for any spinning kick, a roundhouse, a tornado, anything like that is a straight pushing kick to the chest area. Right down the middle, fast and hard! The time it takes to complete a move like that leaves them completely vulnerable.
Also, you need to test your opponent first. A quick strike followed by an immediate backpedal will let you test your opponent and see what they are capable of.
Good on ya mate for getting in there and giving it a crack. There are some monstrous egos in martial arts, so it's good to see someone with a bit of humility. I'm sure that you will only grow and learn from this experience. Everyone who's given you shit about what happened in this vid can go and get fucked.

Most people don't understand that Olympic/sporting styles of TKD practice/train with their arms to their sides, while Self-Denfensive styles instruct you to keep your hands up. Tomato, Tomäto. It all comes down to the different discipline you are learning/wanting to specialize in.
Why do TKD practitioners keep their arms low? It really makes no sense to me. Especially since you can condition the body to take much more punishment than your head. Keep your hands up.

WTF TKD is more of a sport than a martial art so fighters are focused on scoring points to win the fight. Thus keeping your arms on the side makes it easier to block body kicks and avoid getting scored. Higher level fighters will find it really easy to dodge head kicks, so we rather concentrate on blocking body kicks. Hope this makes sense.

doubt you will see this but, as you can see the other player was checking you and your reactions were still in attack mode so he knew you were about to attack him and placed the perfect counter. my advice is to check the other person before you go in like that because the other person is probably thinking of a counter.
imho u both great fighter, only your opponents had a great opportunity first and he took it .. btw did u looking at his foot when you were going to kick?
I don't know the rules in TKD tournaments but why don't the fighters keep their hands up? Is it not allowed to use the hands to block stuff like that?
@casprd33 Yeah the body gear is targeted more. You can't punch to the face or anything. Most of the time you can see the kick coming from a mile away. So it's easy to dodge your head or block it by just putting your arm up. Oh btw im going to orlando for junior nationals wish me luck :)

@shmad1 Traditional (real) karate still exists but it's rare. The people I see competing in tournaments today are very athletic & very coordinated but couldnt fight their way out of a paper bag. Karate is something like 250 yrs old and there was no such thing as tournament competition or even sparring until after WWII (<70 yrs ago). It was developed as a means of self defense & cultivation, not a way to score points, win trophies & boost your ego. So keep your poorly worded insults to yourself.

@MayAdonaibewithyou37 Blocking with the hands are discouraged simply because the power of the leg can break the bones.. I know a girl who was in fact wearing all the gear blocked a kick with her arm and the bone snapped out of the skin gross but one of the reasons why you shouldn't block with your upper body :)
@CharlieOnTheNet But isn't it better to break your arm then to break your neck? Regardless, if one blocks correctly, and has their guard close to their head, they shouldn't have a problem, though I see where it is possible to break your arm when blocking a kick. :)

My advice, as a fellow TaeKwonDo student: Keep your hands up! If your hands were up, you would've blocked the kick, and wouldn't of been knocked out.

I know a girl who was in fact wearing all the gear blocked a kick with her arm and the bone snapped out of the skin gross but one of the reasons why you shouldn't block with your upper body :)

@CharlieOnTheNet But isn't it better to break your arm then to break your neck? Regardless, if one blocks correctly, and has their guard close to their head, they shouldn't have a problem, though I see where it is possible to break your arm when blocking a kick. :)

I have been told to keep my hands down in a fight I had and I was down coaching some of my juniors in Dublin and one of my ones broke his opponents hand because he tried to block a kick so yanno I'm just doing the math here haha :) Watch Sarah Stevenson's fight for the worlds 2011 i think, you see her blocking with her leg :) amazing to watch :)
