They came to create civilization out of a ton of unused land and resources. The natives were not civilized like the europeans. Their tools were more crude, they were lacking significantly in technology and science, and for the most part they lived in tribes which is uncivlised (based on the word's etymology at least).

Just because the -er, -ize, and -or endings reflect the latin base from which certain words derive doesnt make american english bastardized. The -ise that is prevalent in french and english comes from the latin -ize, so for most words -ize is actually more correct.

As a real Mexican who is very prideful of her native culture and customs I feel insulting seeing a bunch of idiot kids screaming "Mexican pride!", "Brown Pride!" when they havent the slightest idea of what it is.
