It was the 60's and British pop/rock was enjoying worldwide success. Many musicians and singers all over were influenced by this. Also keep in mind that at that time many in New Zealand still considered Britain "The Motherland". More so than they do now I might add.
Coupla responses....I'm pretty sure this is from Happen Inn, which was a local Kiwi show. They used to have local acts singing hits which were on the charts at the time - clips of the original artists were hard to come by, and also it provided work for locals.
The Marty Wilde original was a big hit locally. I was four and like most kids thought it was about going over the hills to Africa. I figured the red dog running free in the song was named Benny.
I'd been hungering to hear this fun song for almost four decades. Now there are three posts of "Abergavenny" on YouTube and I'm in Heaven! And this one's even got choreography! "Abergavenny" with dancin'! Wow!
@PimpernellP Did you know per head of population, the Kiwis have produced some amazing talent. Split Enz, Dame Kiri, Max Merritt, Dave Dobbyn, Marc Hunter, Mi-Sex, Mother Goose, Margaret Urlich, and one world famous talent few Kiwis have heard of...Gale Garnett. The Seekers (Australian) even sang a song about the Kiwis... "For I Know I'll Never Find Another Ewe."
@creativeengineer Yes, I was aware. NZ has produced a lot of talent. I really liked Sharon Oneill. I remember Bill and Boyd in the 60's. I guess they may be retired by now.

A Coupla questions from an ignorant American"
1. Which show was this from?

It is also worth noting that school marching teams were HUGE in NZ back in the day.
It influenced the choreography somewhat, I suspect.

This should be under New Zealand music as they are a New Zealand duo, not Australian

@kiwibernie I think they did better when they went to Australia. Kiwi music market is way too small.

Good song, OK version, cheesy choreograpy typical of TV at that time.
