Thank you so much for making and uploading this video. I have an 8 year old little girl and she's been struggling with reading for 4 years. This video is such an inspiration. Thanks again for sharing.
Thanks. Funnily enough, this video is the one that launched our youtube careers. I put it together using a digital camera that could only shoot 15 seconds of movie at a time. It took my about 2 days to complete.
The thing that kept me going was that it was such an important subject. There was no script, I just decided to do it one sunny day when I saw the children reading to their mum.
Goodwork on the reading and home schooling. Even though it looks hard, I am sure it is just as rewarding. You should look up John Taylor Gatto, he is an award winning American school teacher that talks about how bad the school system is.
Thanks for the heads-up. It is hard but very very rewarding. At the end of the day, we don't really have an alternative if we want to break the cycle.
really beautiful video. Your children are beautiful (I have a 5 and 4 year old, myself), their enthusiasm for reading is beautiful, and your passion for their education is beyond noble. My wife's keen on home schooling our two, and I sent her a copy of this vid.
It's hard but rewarding work. I try to help Mrs Icha out as much as I can with their physical education and exercise which takes the form of football and training. Go for it! you will be able to see the difference in next to no time.
The comments so far have been very interesting, and varied... I think it would be good for us all to remember that this method that I use works for us and it's just an alternative to what's 'out there' specifically since educational systems are failing our children big time... it's way over due that we start sharing alternatives that work! Keep the comments and alternatives coming!!!
This video blew my mind. The concept of a muslim woman teaching her kids to read with Starwars. Unbelievable. I can't even count how many wires crossed in my brain. Normally I'de make some backhanded comment about (black/muslims(schooling+Star Wars))/0
but I'm dumbfounded. I'll pass this along to anonymous and see what happens. I'm guessing everyone will be dumbfounded and declare a smokeout, while we get to the bottom of this. lulz achieved
One of the methods that we use to encourage children to read, is to allow them to choose what they would like to read. Giving children this level of responsibility, often has the effect you describe as "blowing your mind".
By the way, we are all heavily into Star Wars in this house. The struggle between the Sith and the Jedi is something all Muslims can really relate to.
when i was your son's age we were discouraged from reading enid blyton because it was regarded as rubbish. this was so wrong. anything that grabs your attention should be read. if nothing else, it improves your grammar and spelling, and more importantly encourages further reading. starwars is just fine, try the famous five, it's great, my 8 year old niece is really into it.
Meh, homeschooling = no social interaction. There's no doubt public school lacks, and its tough for some kids, but that social learning is required. That and fundementalists seem to prefer homeschooling to force absolutely ridiculous religious dogma down their kids throat.
The "No social interaction argument" is a common misconception. The kind of interaction children tend to get from the large classroom environment is best avoided. Home-schooled children get the best class of interaction with adults, and with selected children in after-school groups.
I do agree that parents should be more involved in their child's reading. It might have been nice if someone had intervened when I began to read Grissom's "A Time To Kill" while in the fourth grade, for instance.
Still, not all children learn in the same manner. I for one taught myself to read (I was stubborn) and I have always had a very high reading level.
I'm also very impressed by your children, you're obviously doing something right. ;)
I don't think you need to homeschool for your child to be successful. I was reading proficiently when I was three because I attended a preschool where value was placed on teaching children to read early. I still carry those values with me today, and I could read at a college level when I was in 8th grade.
Still, I commend this, and I wish more parents and schools put more value into books these days :(
Uhm that's Lauryn Hill, one of the most respected people in the Hip Hop culture. If you're going to speak* or comment on a mature topic, cut the bullshit.
I am impressed and inspired at the same time. This is all very good. I can see they have a bright future. Be blessed.

In some cases you are right, but who are you to infringe on someone else's liberties?
Smacks of communism.

I love that sentiment, "words carry weight."

thats amazing, the six and nine year old were reading at junior high levels. Homeschooling is the way to go.
sahara1924 4 years ago
Yes. We just need to believe that we can do it and to know that there are whole networks of homeschooling families out there that will help.
