  • for those of us who sometimes struggle with uptempo bop type songs , this is a good lesson on what is really important about it ...the quarter note is king ... you dont always have to force that trad jazz ride cymbal pattern , you can just play quarter notes ...they work fine if they are in the right place

  • anyone tell me who is dat man on piano?

  • @dadeejayking1 Jorge Dalto

  • bom!!

  • Love to watch Steve jam, always a real pleasure

let' us not forget; Gene Krupa = the originator of the drum solo!

    peace )

  • Thank you very much !

  • 1:35 was FUCKING NASTY

  • steve gadd: a god at drums

that ride cymbal: sucks balls XD

  • @pwnage51 amen bro!

  • @pwnage51 I love that ride. Maybe you just wanna hear a PING, and not a TAA. I think this ride is perfect for the tune he's playing.

  • if that aint chops , what is ? the guy is incredible , and has style , and amazing feel which is true musicianship . he makes me look like i've never played before in my life !! awesome !! :)

  • A very must DVD ..... which started all my love to Gadd's drums playing...

  • that bass has bad tone

  • Smokin

  • very crazy bop... the drums play full wave!! bass and piano super!!

  • Superb player who undoubtedly is a wonderful human in all respects. Why? Because he is extremely CONSIDERATE.

Also I love a lick I first see at around 1:26. I think he pretty much OWNS it: two spills of four 1/16th notes... three light with left hand followed by a giant bass drum WHAP! on the fourth ...!...!

  • @20drummer11 I was just going to make a comment about Steve's ride in this one when I saw your comment. For this piece, I would have preferred a slightly larger ride with a bit more "wash". Nevertheless, he really is a great player. Always enjoy listening to him.

  • 7 people are drums.

  • Hard to believe...7 people don,t like this!!!

  • Two words.... Nite Sprite. On the Chick Corea album The Leprachaun

  • unreal play!

  • I love how white most upright bassist are I see on these videos.

  • and that's him just fucking around. total improve. awesome!

  • has to be the best drummer of all time!

  • gadd rules!

  • This is amazing. So refreshing to see this video.

  • COKEEEE

  • Non ce n'é per nessuno... meraviglioso suona bene qualsiasi genere!!!!!

  • such grace and class... im tryin to better myself to get to the level of excellence of the greats

  • Steve Gadd + Eddie Gomez(bass) = the best!!!

  • Buddy Rich was my jazz hero, and I thank him for bringing me into the world of jazz. But now, I stopped listening to Rich in favor of Elvin Jones, Gadd, Max Roach, Jimmy Cobb, etc. Plus, after learning some other instruments too, I've come to learn that chops ≠ groove. And groove is what pays the bills.

  • hes so deep in the pocket when he plays, its amazing.

  • It's neither Miles or Bird it's what musicians call "rhythm changes"...The chord progression to "I've Got Rhythm".

  • is this a miles davis or charlie parker tune?

  • This guy changed drumming back in th 70's. Hes all about serving the music. Very creative while still serving the music. A rare combination. Deceiving complex in many ways.

  • amazingg! love this sound. just found a band in L.A. that does bebop and big band.

drummer is awesome. ck them out.

    search cinnamon doll jazz

    enjoy!

  • where can I get a copy of the music for piano? wow

  • @i4future

This was improvised. You would have to transcribe it yourself.

  • @colourfulwithaU I got that much, I play jazz, I figured there was still a sheet music he improvised from.

  • @i4future

I got the impression from this comment that he was looking for exact sheet music, not lead sheets.

  • Wow, this is pretty slick.

  • O.O

  • @MC345611

you probably meant ghost notes, as there are not many grace notes with Steves style of play (more linear in nature)

  • Check out his discography on the official Steve Gadd website. This dude has played on literally HUNDREDS of albums, I'm sure you can hear why!

  • The fills he does in this could only sound amazing in the hands of Steve. So delicate, so awesome.

  • If I was going into the studio and needed a drummer. He would be the first guy on the list by a country mile.

  • That's Eddie Gomez on bass.

  • Steve Gadd!!!!! I want to play drums like him!!!!!!

  • What's Chick Corea doing on bass?

  • Steve Gadd is so good at the piano!

  • At the end of the day, no matter what comments are left here, the only opinions that matter are those musicians that Gadd has played with, who play with him now, and who will in the future. It's the opinions of his peers that matter most, especially to the man himself. I interviewed Gadd back in 2006 for a local publication here in his hometown of Rochester, NY. Nicest guy in the world. Truly a humble soul. The music is all that mattered with him, no matter the genre he was playing in.

  • JAZZ MASTERS! OF JAZZ MUSIC!

    *MIKE SPENCE.

  • jazz shuffle, snare hits the 2's and 4's + the lets, hats hit all the lets, four on the floor + the lets on 2 and four...in this tempo it really swings...

  • @gwb911 No.

  • I can never understand when people say Gadd doesn't have chops... seriously? listen to those 4's, and those comping figures. His playing is technical and musical. Maybe young drummers don't notice his technical ability as much because he uses his technique to serve the music rather than to show off and impress people. Even if you transcribed everything he played note for note I doubt anyone without above average drumming abilities could play what he plays as smooth and effortlessly as he does

  • @Vicfirth5bb Its pratice practice practice..corny, but true.

  • @Vicfirth5bb

    1. Unless you've actually tried to play in this style, most people don't understand how hard it is.

    2. Many young musicians only understand chops as speed and complexity. They do not understand that chops are also about precision, independence, and control of dynamics. Older musicians (drummers especially) know how much mastery it takes to be play as fast, as accurate, and with the degree of volume control that Gadd does in this video.

  • @Vicfirth5bb blehhhhhhhhh

  • @Vicfirth5bb not even that, my drum teacher sat in the same studio as him, and trust him, gadds got the chops

  • @Vicfirth5bb along with the technicality he also understands dynamics and the entire range of time. snare slaps that stand out then the pause, most people would see that as he was taken off tim,e but its not because he fades with the ride again and just brings everything right back. i really think he brings a lot to drumming in a multitude of styles of play.

  • @Vicfirth5bb i just have this feeling that steve cannot play very fast because he has devoted all his time to finding the groove. So perhaps its not that he chooses to serve the music more, he just cant go fast so he has to make up in terms of groove. i'm just guessing...

  • @blight4hire Just hopping in to the conversation.. I think he can play fast enough to play anything that is his type. I don't understand what speed has to do with anything. Only fast drummer I know that can really play is M. Mangini. If you only focus on speed you lack the feel and the groove. If you only focus on the feel and groove you can sound that (almost, let's not forget that the guy is Gadd).

  • @22pharaoh22 what i am talking about is for eg dennis chambers ... he can groove as well as steve.. like all drummers at that skill level can groove! but dennis chambers can move so fast around the kit tastefully. he has speed and groove. steve gadd is still awesome no doubt. so i am wondering whether steve can actually go that fast .. well i'm not fit to judge him so its just a mystery to every1

  • @Vicfirth5bb noone really says steve gadd doesnt have chops.... he does. but in comparison to other great drummers his chops dont make him stand out. his rock solid time is what mostly makes him a great drummer

  • @Vicfirth5bb i dont completely agree with u, he has chops, but his bebop seems kinda unnatural, almost forced, it doesnt seem to swing hard enough to me...check out brian blade or gary novak, when those guys play strait ahead , its beyond beliefs

  • metal sticks??

  • @J4YM5 Carbonium.

  • @J4YM5 no, steve gadd sig. sticks. wood sticks painted black.

  • @bareftjacky ah i was wondering. metal sticks arent the way forward in the jazz world

  • @J4YM5 no. his signature sticks are wood, just coated in black paint

  • brutál

  • I dont know what you guys are talking about...he's swingin' to me!

  • Gadd looks hot tho, I'd give him a good skulljob on the nutsack!

  • on word. Brilliant!

  • Why argue, when you can be playing?

  • @MagicXXMadness Best comment ever lol

  • those rcs sound so nice

  • thats how its done!!!

  • Is that not a young Eddie Gomez on bass? I am asking because i am sincerely not sure. Gadd says it all when he plays. You get a sense that he has nothing to prove. He just plays the music as good or better than anybody.

  • @chungiemunchin Yep it is Eddie Gomez. :)

  • Steve Gadd: always tasteful and groovin'! Sure there are drummers with more or a better chops, but music is all about feel and Steve Gadd is a true master on the drums when it comes to that.

  • Always in the pocket!! One of the BEST drummers of our lifetimes..Totally on top of the rhythm, a true genius!!

  • When I hear this stuff i completely forget about the chops its all musicality.

  • I love how he's been pretty much playing the exact same set-up for decades. That's just unreal.

  • Gadd does not always keep the hihat moving or hardly ever hits the crash with the left hand, so what, he has the best feel ever. most studio demand in history.

  • @kentworth100 second most. bernard pretty purdie holds the number one spot i believe. both incredible drummers

  • music apart... he looks like the bad, from the western movie "For a few dollars more" ;)

  • He doesn't keep the hi-hat constant throughout. Is this his own unique style or is the typical "on 2 and 4" spang-alang something that is negotiable. I mean, I know it doesn' t have to be on 2 and 4 but all of the books I have studied from has the hi-hat pretty much constant throughout concerning bebop. I wonder if it makes it hard on the other musicians to have the hat deviating like that. Don't get me wrong it sounds great and adds some nice colour just wondering if everyone does this eventual

  • @metalmike83 Playing 'broken time' requires advanced musicians who all can lock in to the groove without the drummer keeping time. Check out the book "Beyond Bop Drumming" and drummers Mel Lewis, Roy Haynes, Paul Motian, Jack DeJohnette, Elvin, Tony, Ed Blackwell. I've been studying jazz for 12 years and still have to stick with 2 and 4 in most situations because A) my time isn't great and B) because the people I play with don't always have great time. But it's a work in progress! :)

  • @metalmike83 in moder jazz it´s usual to found the hi hat used like the four hand, and only the ride pattern stays tipical (sometimes neither the ride)

  • Blues is the pop of jazz and sometimes it can also be the bitch.

  • Some of the more difficult alsos are also women, money and zen-bhuddism!

  • Playing any music well is not easy. Including blues... there are plenty of mediocre musicians in both blues and jazz. The jazz mediocre guys just have more chops to bore you with.

  • Blues drumming is easy....unless you decide to make it rocket science. Jazz drumming is much more complex, obviously.

  • I love the composition of this whole piece. It starts out as standard predictable bebop, then the instruments start losing patience in such a boring piece. It gets more dissonant, loud, and harsh then drum solo calms and clears the air. Rinse and repeat.

  • you make me laugh. retard

  • Comment removed

  • it's got nothing to do with race, fuck sake

  • hey idektron, you have no business here lol, and u obviously have no ear for music, and have no clue how much Gadd and Gomez have contributed in the music world in various musical genres.

So to answer your question, yes! this is bebop, and no you're not black, you're 3 inch dick is proof of that.

Leave now and dont come back.... ya cracker ass cracker LMFAO

  • if this is bebop then i'm black..

  • @idektron

    Get yourself some boot polish.

Sure it swings, but it ain't "swing". Or could you imagine Frank Sinatra singing this?

  • All big black musicians give you a laugh.

  • hmmm I checked out your videos - you definitely are far from black (and I don't mean your skin color I mean your playing). Gadd swings harder in four bars of quarter notes on the ride than all of your best moments combined. Sell three or four of your drum kits, invest in a metronome, then get out and learn how to play with people instead of masturbating in front of the camera.

  • @zip91413 ouch!

  • Oh, those pause is just solid gold.

  • All Dave Weckl ever wanted to be was Steve Gadd, and he is. I say we change his name to Steve God.

  • Steve's silence is better than most drummers noise. What an artist.

See how he staggers the hi-hat after the ride to give a more spacey swing.

How does he keep time on those breaks !!!

  • "Steve's silence is better than most drummers' noise" - May I use this as my email signature. ;-)

    In total agreement,

    M.

  • for the E. Gomez and S. Gadd fans, you probably already wore out the Chick Corea Friends album. If not, then get it. Gadd and Gomez are awesome on every track in that album. Chick Corea, Steve Gadd, Eddie Gomez, Joe Farrell (sp?).

  • Steve gadd is my hero.

  • I like gadd's ride tone quite a bit, I'm not digging his drum tone too much though, granted he tunes for best resonances so the mics can pick up, but I'd tune a little higher for bebop, that kick also bugs the hell out of me, I don't know exactly why, it just does

  • yea i know what you mean, its a bit too harsh, like for rock

  • @wabj90 agree with the comment about Gadd's tone here. His playing is immaculate as always, but it seems to me that he uses the same loose, dead tone regardless of the musical context.

  • name 2

  • rrdrums110,

educate youself about gadd. I know some of those old cats (L Coryell & the late Joe Beck) according to these guys, Gadd changed the drum world in the 70s. And if I'm not mistaken he's one of the most recorded drummers of all time. There are guys who can out chop him, but this guy plays for the music ....that's his thing....groove!!!!!

He's a more appealing drummer to musicians rather than just dummers. Unfortunatley most people would rather play with a gadd, not a rich.

  • @jswetts YOU TELL IT BROTHER!

  • @jswetts true.i had to do channel one suite by BR at a concert and sure i got the biggest ovation of everything in the concert, but i just felt like the whole chart was written by a drummer for a drummer and every bar was "GO NUTS!!!", which isn't really musical. i honestly liked it the least out of all the songs we did.

  • @jswetts ... rrdrums has a problem with Gadd . It is pointless trying to educate him or enlighten him . For rrdrums , if its not Buddy or Morello it sucks .

  • @jswetts Gadd is a friend of mine. You're right about all you say EXCEPT...Ironically, Buddy was a mega pocket guy too. He was in the pocket when he played "his stuff", but there are many recordings where he's just layin' it down. Gadd and Buddy are on the same side, not opposite.

  • @jswetts Yeah, Gadd's a lot easier to play with than Rich. He's not a hog (not an insult to Rich at all) and is more of a combo drummer. Rich was even invited to jam with a bunch of incredible artists for a show and record if I am not mistaken. Turned out a disaster. Rich can really only play in a big band where he gets to decide. And again, not an insult, just the way he plays. But don't get me wrong, Rich is most likely the best drummer to walk this earth.

  • @jswetts yeah- less yelling and firing involved...

  • @jswetts I agree. I'm a bass player and I'd rather play with a guy like Gadd who grooves like hell than some guy who likes to show off.

  • AHHH.... jazz police everywhere.....judgement on everything.....why can't they just let anything go....sense of self righteousness hurting my insides....

  • you, sir, are an idiot

  • @rrdrums110 OH NO THE JAZZ POLICE ARE HERE!!

  • whoever says the drum have no tone...that is wrong...they definetely do have tone but when playing jazz you would tune them a lot higher, the toms as well as the snare. If he was playing some funky stuff it would be perfect

  • Steve is just no Jazz Drummer....well damn...He is a Monster playing Fusion, Pop/Rock, Blues but Swing...thanks, No Thanks

  • Absolutly right you are!!!! . That was one very un swinging un groovy rhythem changes. especially the trading, just horrible. No feel for Jazz, plays it like a funk. Hes good at what he does tho which is fusion....no thanks.

  • gadd is a genius

  • Play like Tony Williams or replace this channel w/a lifetime tribute.

  • CHECK OUT GUVEAU ON YOU TUBE

  • Hell yeah. :D

  • Badass!

  • less is more! Gadd rules

  • Peter Erskine . I can see him doing this and the shit gets good instantly.

  • i wonder how long ago that was shot? and what a similar ride cymbal is today; i kinda like it. And if i should have read the video description

  • Sometime in the mid '80's.

  • those drums sound like cardboard boxes and those cymbals sound like tin trash can lids, but some how he makes them sound good for his music.

  • dont be rediculous his drums and cymbals sound great

  • ya if you like toms and cymbals that have almost no tone.

  • almost no tone? you must have almost no ear for musicality. the drums sound excellent.

  • i've hit and hear steve's set in hollywood, california. trust me. he tunes for the mics, so they pick up and deliver all that tone, but with out them they are dead. and grow some drumming balls and get off the offensive.

  • i really like his ride cymbal for whatever reason even tho it sounds so dry

  • man that was great! what a great sense of keeping time, he's just brilliant, what an inspiration

  • Like watching paint dry and not much more volume either.

  • Dude..

    Shut up

  • one of the most colourfull drummers
