Don't want to sound like a big mouth but Melodic Minor is a Major Scale Flat 3 CDEbFGAB Often Played Over 7th Chords. The 5th of G7 D...Play D Mldc Mnr over G7. Pay close attention to the arpeggios and you will see the relationship of the scales. I think it more of a 7th arpeggio with added notes. It also can sound like a harmonic minor if played over say V chrd altered to Vm7. Play C chrd / scl to Gm7 /G Mldc Minr Look for the C9th chrd notice how close to GM7 in structure.
@bmc31190 it sounds horrific, i hate delay and reverb etc etc good playing but... hmmm... call me old fashioned but i like the blues scale! with a bit of dorian and major pentatonic thrown in
@jib36 thats great until you get shown up by somone doing some cool bebop shit and you throw your guitar down the stairs. probably what happened to this guy, played too many blues licks then threw it down the stairs. now it sounds like shit but he learned some bop at least
@stephlucarelli Dorian is where you replace the flatted 6th with natural 6th, as opposed to the flatted 7th with natural 7th like you said. So you must be incorrect and C Dorian is not the same as C melodic minor.
@verbotenco or put it more easily... Dorian is the next relative mode after major... you have have a C major scale... D minor would be the start of the dorian scale... all the notes in C major are in D Dorian. it just starts and ends on D and has different dominant and recessive notes, thats all.
@verbotenco You misread what he wrote. He said, the melodic minor is a dorian (which yes, has a natural 6th) and you take the flat 7 and make it a natural 7...so basically, take dorian and turn the flat 7 into a sharp one and you have a melodic minor. Although I always think in terms of major, so to me a melodic minor is just a major scale with a flat 3

In Jazz the melodic minor (or jazz minor) scale is the Dorian mode where you replace the b7th with a natural 7th.
C melodic minor scale : C D Eb F G A B
