hi ,i find the 6g in stainless much easyer to get root penetration on the very bottom, with the carbon 6g i struggle to get much beyond flush ,i using a 3.2 gap and 2.4mm wire, any tips for rooting the very bottom of the pipe on carbon for a more convex root?
Have you tried looking at what you are putting in from the top side of the pipe?
You can look at what you are putting in while it is going on. If you can't see it that way then all you can do is feel your way through a bit more push from the bottom. I sell the videos for this footage.
Now i know why he talks so much rather than demonstrates..........look at his other videos where he actually welds........TERRIBLE!!! he might know the theory but he certainly cant put it into practice. Look at his carbon steel plate video !!

Hey man. I'm going to welding school right now. And were working on our open root v-groove plates right now. I don't run a knife edge. We've been taught not too. I noticed you said that you don't want to put a root face or landing when you tig. If I run a knife edge is it gonna give me better penetration on my open root v-grooves and pipe and such? Thanks man!
This guy must charge by the hour. Talks to his customer for a few hours, repeating himself over and over again and then does a tack weld, comes back tomorrow to grind, and then on the third day he does his first pass.
Man does this dude ever shut the Fu@K up? Jesus I been welding for 12 years and was taught by my Old man who is w welder for 45 years and a boat builder, and I have never heard my Da talk about welding in 10 years as to what this guy comes out with in 8 Mins!!! Just get on and do some damn welding....plus tig welding is the easiest form of welding.
Well Tweetie.. Tig welding looks easy..but when there is a problem, and your working in a pulp mill. The worst of conditions can happen.. That is when the welder has to know how fix.. I say listen up...This guy knows what he is talking about..
TIG is the easiest form of welding, in terms of measuring it against MMA stick welding, or MIG welding.
I am not entirely sure who taught you how to weld or as to how much experience you have of it, but I'd suggest that if you are learning and looking for tips you don't listen to this gobshite on this video.
As for my own experience i have been welding twelve years and have all the certs for coded welding, I am a hydraulic engineer and weld machinery mostly and hydraulic pipework also.
I didn't mean to sound like I am slagging this guy off for his welding, he may be great, but damn he talks way to much.
Hey MDTread. Thanks for the great tig and pipe videos. I was wondering though where the video is where you are TIG'ing the root pass on this pipe in the 6G position.
If you will use a flapper wheel on a straight end grinder and clean the area around the bevels, you shouldn't have problems with porosity on carbon. Only if it is dirty metal.
Michael I feel I am completely the opposite I feel stainless flows better then carbon, yes stainless you gotta purge and all but some reason stainless pipe has been easier for me, yeah I know i'm weird what hard is easy and whats easy is hard for me haha
Hope everything is going great for ya up there. I just broke out you're videos again trying to get back into pipe
realy good instruction , im kinda noobie with tig welding , every good instruction helps but i need more practice. ( im 18 and still a apprentice for a plant mechanik) sry for bad english ^^
Very nice superdave. I worked in the powerhouse for many years too. I used to hate those fitters that would wine and cry about having to work and they would take advantage of a good welder and try and shame you into fighting with their sloppy fit up.
well i am going to apply for the steamfitters apprentiship program as soon as it starts accepting peaple in march, so i can be a fitter/welder because I am a "if you want it done right do it your self" person. i work on second shift and i usualy have to clean up after first shifts mess'es like leaky welds, bad fitup, and general lazyness. they lost the passion for being a true craftsman
Hey mdtread, I've been Steamfitter for 33yr and a welder for most of those years, and I know what you mean about some of our bother fitters that hate to or just don't know how to fit up a joint. All in all pipe fitters are pros and are trained by the best. I have noticed this when I traveled the country this to be the case, but I think you'll find that because of being a traveler.
looks like 4in sch80, I weld a lot of that at nebraska boiler and alot of it in almost 6GR position and i would be happy to have any of our stuff fit up like that, Im usually fighting with a 1/16 to 1/4in top to bottom root gap. got 2 6G quals tig stick and mig
why not just do it right and put in 4 tacks. that would keep it from moving anywhere then quarter the bitch out to keep it from drawing up.

@eljockvis run a more narrow bead. make sure all your wire gets in the root, try and keep the puddle off the bevel.

they wont tell you this when your testing.

Do you do anything different to keep from getting porosity on the inside of the pipe while your running the root pass?

I find carbon to be little easier. It is a very different weld and has different characteristics and is more forgiving than stainless.

Helpful hints. I have a Stainless TIG ticket and I am testing tomorrow for a carbon ticket. I'm hoping it will be easier. Thanks for the tips.

Hey,
Good luck with your apprenticeship Dave.
You can really learn a great deal from the Steamfitters Union and make some good bank.
