haven't tried to plant onions from seed yet, I've been planting from bulbs i get from the farmers market. they never get very big though, any idea what im doing wrong??
@jude1c9v ... Try planting seedlings instead of the bulbs. You'll also need to plant the right type of onion for your area. Lots of folks order theirs from Dixondale Farms in TX.......Donald
just an idea ! maybe use a 3 or 4' ( foot ) peace of 3/4 or 1" pvc pipe to plant the seed from the car seat :) but could be smaller pipe like 1/2" with a funnel on the loading end ... 4:10 to 4:45 could be done from the car. looks like it maybe ez'er to put the seed down that way just an idea ! :) Just tryin to help :) Thanks and Good Luck
Hi Donald I have a question. My dad gave me a Satsuma tree. it's currently in a bucket. Should I plant it now or wait till spring? What is the best time of year to plant it? Thanks!!
Thanks for the video Donald, Would love to see an update as they go, I am planning on having a little farm of my own when I get back to the US. Love watching your videos reminds me of home every time I watch'em.
Donald just a suggestion here,You might try measuring and planting stakes on the end of the rows as a focal point when drawing your rows. You still do a pretty darn good job just the same.Love the videos, keep em coming, you are an inspiration to all your fans.Hope your feeling better.
nice to see you post a new vid Donald, I just got my onions in on the 15th. Im planting Candy, and gonna try the walla walla and utah jumbo.... we shall see, I have some shallots seeded as well, Ambition, saffron, as well as a red variety, anyways regards from Houston! and keep these awesome videos comin!
Wooooohooo! Awesome. Looking forward as always to see how they come out!
My little Candy sprouts seem to be happy. They have the best spot in the garden for the wintertime. lol In February, I'm going to transplant and cut the tops a bit like you did a few years ago. well...assuming they grow like yours did to that point! lolll
@gardenvespers777 ...Oh they'll do just fine especially if they're already coming up. When you transplant em only plant the top of the bulb about an inch deep. Roots are shallow so keep the soil somewhat moist after transplanting.....Donald
@dionicia12 …The ability of your soil to hold moisture and the weather has a lot to do with that. Best way to determine if you need to water is dig down a few inches and check for moisture. If it’s dry, water…..Donald
Donald, I planted onions for the first time last spring thanks to you and I could not believe how easy and how well they turned out. I haven't had to buy an onion for many months! Now you have me thinking about planting seeds now. When can I plant garlic? I planted some last spring and it turned out okay but nothing like the onions. Thanks for your wonderful videos. I always am happy to see when you have posted a new one.
Donald, it may just be me, but you sound like you are gettin over a cold in this video. It doesn't matter cause you always do a great job. Thanks for sharing all of you knowledge with us.
Look at that! Straight as a pin! That machine sure does a wonderful job huh?
I have to hand it to ya, you do a beautiful job on your rows, and the machine does a great job too. LOL Not only would I love to own a machine like yours, I would love to have the land to use it on too!
Seriously, you take such beautiful care of your machineryh, and it does so much for so many. You have to be proud of it.
PS And who wouldn't love to have those onions !!!! mmmmmmm
Nice Vlog Donald I think I will go and buy some onion seeds and get them planted its still warm here avg is still 81 in always sunny California central valley.
Donald Interesting way to plant onions. Here in New Jersey I start onions in flats in February and set out as soon as the ground can be worked. Thanks, you have given me ideas to consider. Randy
@jerseyrandy ...Hey Randy, I know this works down here in Zone 8 but not sure how well in your area. I would maybe try a short section just to see.....Donald
Hey Donald, made me a couple of your pvc seed planters .Seen this lady plant flat at a local greenhouse she had a vibrating machine vacum too did 72 at once.Got me thinking ,which is dangerous, duct tape elect. tooth brush to pvc. What ya think.Your right those bunching onions greens are goodfor seasoning and use a little.I got perennial ones from Southern Exposure called evergreen hardy ,still growing after 3 years ina barrel.Great vids ,later---Roger
@TheSemperfidude ...Hey Roger, you may have something there. Give it try and make a video for us to check out. Who knows you may be able to sell those things on TV, $19.95.....but wait if you order now. : ) .......Donald
@BolognaRingRanch ...Hey Jeff, had I not put that tractor in 4WD it would have been nothing nice. I still ended up with a little curve on the other end. Kind of looks like a ? mark. : ) ......Donald
@webcajun I've done that many times my friend. Even in 4wd, mine are crooked. I anticipate the end of the row too much I think. I have noticed that if I take the loader off, I make em straighter. I guess it's a weight thing.
@BolognaRingRanch …Rather than lowering the hippers all the way down on the first pass I think if I’d hold up a bit where it wouldn’t dig in so much it’d do a lot better. Finish the row on the second pass…..Donald
Hey Donald - What kind of onions did you plant? Where did you get the seeds and what was the cost? Even buying in bulk I paid nearly $20 for 5,000 seeds. How long will it take for the seeds to sprout up through the dirt?
@bulldogjerry ...Hey Jerry, the variety is "Candy" and I order from Morgan County Seeds. Onions are expensive no matter where you get em. Think I paid $25 for the pkt. The weather is suppose to turn cold this week so I'm not expecting to see em mark the row for about 2+ weeks......Donald
I just planted about 100 large purple onion seeds today too according to the Farmers Almanac (October 18 & 19 are best days for planting root crops) here in Florida.
Mine are crowded into a 2 ft by 10 ft raised bed. Will be transplanting in Feb.
I got my heirloom seeds from trade winds fruit dot com and will be saving the seeds from a couple onions that I'll let mature and go to seed.
Donald you have a beautiful garden, I love looking at tilled soil, and watching and listening to the tractor. Also in your videos I always hear a cow bawling or the birds singing. Love it Gary Farmall
i planted onion seeds with garden lime and they sprouted what else do i need
Thank 4 sharing, U hang in there as well (^_^)
