Your video inspired me to try and learn! Have sent you video of me playing Scots Wha Hae, it is the only tune I know at the moment. Thank you for your inspiration!!!
One of my piping pupils, who attended the Royal College of Music in London, told me that her tutors there (for other instruments) told her that the Scottish Highland Pipes along with the harp, were the two most difficult instruments to learn. But with unswerving perseverence and a good teacher, you will make the grade. Good luck!
Nice going lady... I assume you're learning from the College of Piping tutor? I'm three years in myself, so it's still fresh in my mind to remember the beginner's struggle. If I had one bit of advice to give you it would be to relax; your fingers seem really tight in this video which always leads to a crossing noise (my bane!), not to mention tired fingers!
Nice playing, Alexa ;-) Have you got your highland pipes yet, and when are you going to post a video of you playing them? I began the highland pipes just a few months ago, though I've played Spanish Catalan bagpipes (called sac de gemecs : wailing bag) for the past couple of years. All the best.
Hello, this is Dong-Hwan Choe, a bagpiper in University of California -Riverside Pipe band. I have seen your video quite a while ago, and today I saw your video showing your heritage. I am also Korean. It is very nice to see you practicing bagpipe. Keep up good work and hope the best!!
Hi Alexa, my name is Ryan. I'm a 20 year old bagpiper who started at the age of nine. My father taught me how to play the chanter, and it was hard! Whenever I messed up, he'd make me do push up's. Now, we play together in the CRC pipe band of Albany. I teach the chanter to a woman who is a mother of one. I have got to honestly say that you are progressing a lot. You seem to have a strong will to keep going to make your brother proud. You have a stronger will than any other beginner I've seen.
Lighten up, people!!! Do you see that she'd only been playing for 2 months? I think it's awesome! I'm sure that you critics didn't do as well when you'd had only 2 months time w/ the chanter. I'd love to hear what she sounds like now that she's had another 9 months to practice! Probably has much better technique and sound. Xlnt job! Keep it up!!
Right on, Same as last, if you use less stress on the finger muscles, it goes faster, also I noticed myself that I raise my fingers REALLY high when I play. Do your best not to get into that habit, closer is better for higher speed piping, at least for me, I am just starting out myself. Keep up the good work.
That's wrong. If you do not lift the fingers high then you will muffle the note
The problem isn't in how high you lift the fingers, it's in the finger speed in closing the chanter (P.S. always give the notes their true value, and don't think you need to play everything at 100beats a minute)
for lots of information on piping, google bob dunsire's website, it's a forum for pipers
it might just be the lighting, but your left-hand fingers look really stressed, you want them straight, but keeping your muscles relaxed will really help with speed(as well as endurance)
Definitely the correct way to start...My instructor was huge on the whole 'slow down! big notes! big gracenotes!' I hated it, but once I actually did what he said, it worked. Now I am complimented on my execution all the time. Fingers close to the chanter may help for lower hand successive gracenotes in, say, Balmoral Highlanders in the 3rd part. Still, you can get caught up and miss notes much more easily.
I started "lessons" I guess you could call them; teaching myself really, around Christmas and just started looking at this song, so I'd say that after 4 to 6 weeks of practice, from what I gathered on the "about this video" your lower doublings are great. I'd imagine you are much much better by now tho. Keep on piping.

She's also grasping the chanter too tightly - this will impact on finger speed
