I did some googling so I thought I'd share my findings. This controller is listed at the C-thru's site as costing £1,050.00 (although they're temporarily sold out). They also produce a simpler version with fewer buttons, no wheels, knobs or pedalsockets (and perhaps not velocity sensitive, I don't know) for £325.00. People who find these controllers too cheap could instead get similar ones from Opal.
Very cool controller, I wish this layout would catch on so that the prices would drop a bit.
The scene where Bill and Ted bring Mozart forward in time and he goes mental on the keyboards at the mall would have been so more funnier if he had one of these on him too.
@MistahPio that's fine, nothing wrong with that as long as you understand what it is before you make your decision. i have an axiom 49, its a midi keyboard, basically a piano that you can assign whatever sounds you want to, its the best of both worlds...
@DoctorSess I understood what it is, and I know what midi keyboards are... but the feeling of playing physical strings is just different, and in my opinion, much better :)
@MistahPio my opinion is that its not better, just different... i play real piano and guitar as well and you're right they definitely cannot be replaced by electronics. Electronic instruments have a place as well... an acoustic piano and a rhodes electric for example both serve their purposes, one is not better than the other, only better suited for a particular use. Same with MPCs, MIDI controllers, Turntables, etc.
@MistahPio Yes, with a shrill artificial sound like that, it is as you say! An instrument only has heart when the player has, in my humble opinion. And using a good tone helps!
@DANIELPOE89 dunno the name, but if you're American like me, i know this tune as a whistling tune for when you're hiking...i remember hearing the tune in an 80's movie...real vague but maybe that can jog someone else's memory.
Ok...did some research---apparently it's the Colonel Bogey March, a British military march...
The controls looks like they would handle amazing, but i think i would appreciate it more if it would connect to real strings, or at least use custom/more sounds other than organs. Like if i could upload my own .wav sample into it.
Good idea, no doubts. But needs to stop limiting its actual potential for no reason.
i think if u got 2 people, got 1 to learn piano an 1 to learn this after 10 years the person learning this would cream the pianist! think bout it they can do chords in the bass with 1 finger leaving the rest of the left hand free to do other things an the same goes for the right hand! the only problem is u can get lessons for piano, where would u get lessons for this?? lol
2. Real instrument has an infinite number of possible articulation. This instrument is interesting but if I had to spend 10 years in science and you are a virtuoso hexoplayer - I think better be bad on the real piano;)
@EverydayAdventures is it just me or did i see him playing entire songs, bass and lead with one hand? seems like they've made it easier, and people aren't willing to adopt because the piano has been around for hundreds of years.
I'm late to this because I only just discovered this video. I see it's four years old. It just goes to show you how resistant to change we are as a species. This is obviously a huge leap in human to music interfacery but it got no traction because it's different and new and therefore "me no like it smash with rock".
Even I bristle at the idea of trying to wrap my head around learning the fingering conventions involved on it, but I can see that it's an improvement over the standard keyboard.
Uh oh, must learn a new instsrument!? What a nightmare that must be!
You idiots ever seen a russian accordion? The whole purpose of the harmonic key setup is that you can play wide range and big chords easily with one hand.
Mastering that keyboard will leave your other hand free for another keyboard or what ever you fancy. Maybe it ain't that useful for recording 3 note midi's at home, but for a live gig the crazy wide one hand range would be quite awesome.
@kazaamjt as a composer. i would never use this. it would just over complicate it. like i said. you have to learn an entire other instrument. i mean yes, it is easier to play triads in root position. but honestly. how many do contemporary composers write? not that many. it really just over complicates everything. a normal midi keyboard is much easier to use. the piano is set up in half steps. it is so easy to figure out. for this you have to learn an entire other instrument.
@av949 it is not innovation. it is over complication. there is nothing practical about this thing at all any musician can see that. people should just learn the real instrument if they are willing to waste their time learning this.
@av949 that is not what i am saying. if it was more practical then the actual piano i would get it. why on the offensive? pray tell what to you makes a "real" musician? i never said that using this would not make you a musician. hahaha. only that it is not practical. and so what if i like what you call "orthodox musical instruments" if they were good enough for bach, mozart, beethoven, wagner, stravinski, ravel, debussy, rachmaninoff, and prokofiev. they are most certainly good enough for me.
@av949 so when you say people who use "orthodox musical instruments" are "boring and pretentious." you are calling all of those great musicians that as well. this thing is not useful. i am up for using new instruments. but this is just a midi keyboard that has been physically redesigned. there is nothing special about it. if there was some sort of particular sound that only that instrument could produce. then it would be different and worth getting. but this is just a midi keyboard.
@av949 and judging by your comments. you are obviously not a professional musician. you need a lot of maturing to do. you very extremist points of view and honestly i find your comments to be very funny. mostly because of how ignorant you sound. ^_^
@rockmesexyjesus10 he sounded just as immature and ignorant as you sounded pretentious, just sayin ^^
and actually this thing has it's practical uses. However this particular one is not that great, but there are many other midi-controllers like this one that should be able to impress you.
@kazaamjt first of of all if you are going to use a word. at least use it correctly "just sayin" look it up. too many people throw that word around ^_^
but yes i know what i am talking about.
second of all i have nothing against other midi controllers. it is just that actually taking the time to learn how to use this thing in particular. is not worth it. it is ridiculous. it doesn't do anything special. if it did impress me and did something different (like monomes). then it would be worth it.
@rockmesexyjesus10 I get what you mean, and what I ment was that there are examples of synths and drumcomputers (from the 80's mostly) that use this exact lay-out, it's nothing new, and those things might be, like you said, more worth it becos they where (back then) sounding different then anything else. Though most producing software can easily reacreate those sounds.
P.S.: I've totaly forgotten what the original point was I was trying to make, but I think we kinda agree, so it doesn't matter.
@kazaamjt i am not arguing the use of midi keyboards in general. i am talking about this particular design and layout of the notes (which you say is not new?) mostly the physical aspect of it and how pointless it is to buy this thing. because it is not anymore different then any other midi. not everything can be reproduced. there are some features of a lot of electronic instruments that are very particular to them. with this particular midi i just see an over complicated midi keyboard. hahahaha
@av949 you are cool. seriously. and your intellect is amazing to say the least. i hope you have a happy and fulfilling life living as another ameba of life ^_^
Wow. I've thought about the idea of changing the keyboard, i had no idea it had already been done! I want to see how quickly and easily one can learn to play it though.
Since this is a MIDI controller, I'm assuming I could hook it up to my synth and play using all the instruments and effects I've got? (I'm only asking because I really don't know much about MIDI yet). This looks quite cool, but most of the instruments sound rather... tinny.
By the way, in case this affects the answer, I've got a Roland Fantom X8, which has MIDI in, out, and through.
I think this is a really interesting idea, but i have a feeling that noone would use it because everyone that plays music is solidly connected to the standard keyboard

This is either the greatest keyboard ever invented or the worst. Somehow I'm leaning towards it being the best. I want one.

Looks like something you'd find at Toys R Us

Fun for messing around, bad for playing an actual song.
