would if be ok to cut the heads off and let them grow back? mine are all messed up when i bought it the traps stay half open and are mangled....would it be possible just to cut them off and the plant will grow new ones????
imagine walking around something exploring it, then all the sudden it closes around you and your head is sticking out and you stay there til you dehydrate and die. cruel nature lol.
@infoseeker228 There are different types of VFT. Some are called sports, which are genetically engineered, but this variety looks like the Low Giant, or maybe the Big Vigorous.
No, don't go to a garden centre and put your finger in it. I work at a garden centre, once someone puts their finger in a trap the trap closes with nothing in it and the plant cant open it again so that trap is wasted.
Agreed, these gems are quite the wonder of nature.
To those asking whether it eats spiders, I guess you can say it does. But like all people, everyone has preferences. Do your homework and research about these plants first then you can experiment around to see what your VFT likes and doesn't like.
PM me if you want more info. I've been in this hobby for almost a year now and just went through my first dormancy with most of my VFTs surviving.
Ok I need to ask! I have been trying to have one of these plants for years and always kill them. I see yours is not covered. Do they need to be covered, to keep the moisture level high? Any hints? I kill them everytime!
Ok I will make the care plain and simple. Put them in a soil mixture of 1 part peatmoss and one part perlite. Sue distilled water. Do not worry at all about humidity. If you buy it at a hardware store where its been undoubtedly growing inside you will need to acclimate it to full sun. Put it in a window that will receive sveral hours of direct sun and bright light the rest of the day. in a weel move outside for direct hot sun all day. Send me a message for any additional information. :)
actually this is not a mean plant its thier own way to stay alive and in the first place it is the huge beetle not bottle is the one who go inside the venus flytrap
put ure finger in it the plant will eventualy die because touch the heads to much makes it die out of enrgy killing thee plant...so no dont put ure finger in unless its a wild ginourmess one that will digest ure arm but thats it
Feeling my last breath of life slipping away, I buzzed a buzz of pain, of agony, and of sorrow. There was no escape for me. My deepest apologies go to my wife and kids who will never get to see me again. The plants won. They truly are the superior kingdom.
i think they just stay closed until the fly is totally gone .. they they reopen to catch something else...but i dont know how long it takes for the fly to like dissolve or whatever lol
COOL video i have been growing carnivorous plants for a long time and i do hate hearing about those stupid teenagers killing these amazing plants!!!!!!!!
Jeeezzz, that thing closed pretty fast! Nice healthy plant you got there... wish I could get mine like that but this summers been sooooooo dry that it's growth has been stalled. No rain in 2 months here and I'm all outta rain water, I've been using distilled but for 2 plants I got through over 3 gallons a week of water.
They are very easy to grow. That is if you have either distilled or rain water. Leave it outside all year long, even during the winter!!! Venus flytraps are not tropical plants. They need winter a winter dormancy. I may sound harsh, but I'm trying to give growing tips so the plant doesn't die very quickly.
bigger isnt always better, because if there are parts of the insect sticking out it may disease the bristles, they will turn black and die in turn messing up that mouth!
Garden centres sell them cheap. If u put your finger in it'll clasp shut but will do the plant no favours as it takes a lot of its energy to do that & needs a fly in return, not a finger nail! lol. Also, large insects like moths can be a bad idea as the trap needs to shut tightly in order for the digestion phase to work properly, if the insect is too large this wont happen. Its worth looking up on these types of plant if u want yours to live more than 1 season!
What happens if the insect is too big? I fed my new plant an earwig, but was worrying that I'll somehow kill it if I feed it too much or feed it things that are too big.
It doesn't literally chew it up and swallow it. It absorbs all of the nutrients from the fly/insect, and discards the dead body, dried up. It works well because the dead body then attracts new insects, and makes for a nice cycle :)
