Okay, honest question, the verse, "Stay outdoors and spoon" Is spoon used in the context I'm thinking of? Or did it mean something totally different back then. Either way, this song just may be to hot for radio, haha jk.
@ironduke27 In the 1920s, to "spoon" was to hug and kiss. Its meaning has evolved somewhat since then. Compared to the contemporary definition, it was somewhat innocent then.
@bsgs98 My Grandmother who is now 101 says it pretty much means the same thing as it always has. A form of affection between a couple. Where the man lays front to back with the girl. They fit together like spoons., not as innocent as you think...good girls generally didn't spoon back then unless they were engaged. She is from RI married in 1928.
@ironduke27 I think it's actually referring to winter pouring snow as if from a spoon in that particular phrase. "Snowtime, take no time to stay outdoors and spoon." That's always been my take on it. The song says the girl is afraid of being out in the darkness, so the guy is pleading to the moon to stay out and keep the light shining. Snow would cover the moon up (and also wreck his plans for sitting outside with his gal). Hope that helps!
I understand Nora Bayes had made a recording for Victors, But instead they released the Billy Murray recording instead. I do like Ruth Etting recording.
Actually Harvest Moon Magick is the name of Chapter 3 in Ellen Dugan's wonderful book! This song is even mentioned on the title page of Chapter 3: Shine on, shine on harvest moon, Up in the sky....
I just got done reading Autumn Equinox: The Enchantment of Mabon by Ellen Dugan! She mentions Harvest Moon Magick. So at Wikipedia I typed in Harvest Moon and discovered the lyrics to this whimsical, romantic song! It is nice getting to hear Ruth Etting's sweet voice sing this classic song!
i am so happy to hear this song. I began to like this song when i was still 6 or 7 coz this is one of the favorite songs of my late father. Thanks for posting this. To my father, thank you for the songs you used to sing. They will linger on ...I missed your voice. I love you.
Ruth Etting is one of America's greatest treasures, and it's a disgusting shame that she has been forgotten, while sluts, tramps, and whores now take the limelight.
@davecollinsmusic It should be noted that Ruth and Moe Snyder were already divorced when the shooting took place. It was still quite a scandal. He only spent one year in jail.
@wallofvideo not sure but our pal in the round glasses is no other than George Burns. In one of his writings, he and the other guy had been in Vaudeville for a while, the movies here were made, and a short time later they parted company and he traveled with his brother,as Burns and Burns, then when George and Gracie Allen met, the two knew things were going to be firecrackers! Just a littlle FYI for ya.
@stitch656 Not quite. The photo shows Woolsey. Often Woolsey is mistaken for Burns. Woolsey was in show business nearly a decade before Burns made his first motion picture. Later Burns adopted Woolsey’s trademark eyeglasses.
@stitch656 that does look a lot like george burns, but now i'm almost sure the 2 are wheeler and woolsey. the photo was probably taken on the set of "hips, hips, hooray" (1934).
it's funny, i've read that economically times were very hard in 1931, but you wouldn't know it from listening to this beautiful song. i guess a lot of entertainers and their audiences knew how to make the best of a very difficult situation.
Thank you so much . I've only recently discovered this fabulous talent. I've had her Vinyl for years and just decided to play it. What a Babe and for me one of my best discoveries. .....Mike
@lavendertwilight08 Yeh well im 14 and i find a like to this kind of music. It makes me happy and really im the only one i know that listens to the 20's and 30's. Glad to know theres some on else with the same passion.
@lavendertwilight08 yeh well im 14 and i always had a love for this 20's and 30's music. Makes me happy and sothes the daily sound of technology and people. Wish i were born in these years, see what its like!
love this song which was introduced in the 1908 ziegfeld follies....ruth is wonderful. the boswell sisters also have a hotter version that is very good. thanks for the great post.
I was playing my clarinet along with her and noticed a slight difference in the vocal. This is as I remember it....So shine on Shine on harvest moon Up in the sky I ain't had no lovin' since JANUARY, FEBRUARY, JUNE or JULY Snow time ain't no time to stay outdoors and spoon So shine on Shine on harvest moon for me and my gal Snow time ain't no time to stay outdoors and spoon So shine on Shine on harvest moon for me and my gal She has a beautiful voice ! Leebm29
This is such a fantastic song, so mellow and beautiful. And Ruth Etting is a wonderful artist, so this is a real treat. Thank you so much for sharing this and for the information!

Possibly the best rendition of this classic ever! Though I'll always have a soft spot for Oliver Hardy's classic version.
