  • WHAT OLD DISNEY MOVIE USED THIS SONG?!

  • She was absolutely beautiful, and an amazing voice.

  • Love it! Thanks so much for posting this treasure.

  • The official harvest moon this year is Monday, September 12, 2011.

  • I can remember this song when I was a little boy with my younger brother. Brings back many fond memories, Thank you for the music!!

  • @Micelli1947 It's remarkable that a song written in 1908 is still enjoyed today. Thanks for your comment.

  • @Micelli1947

The English Harvest Moon is October for 2011 and the September Moon in English is called the Fruit Moon . . .

  • I love this song and I love the way she sings it. I haven't heard much of her stuff but I like it. Thank you for sharing.

    Ginger

  • recorded the day (and 60 years) before my brithday

  • nice song

  • Okay, honest question, the verse, "Stay outdoors and spoon" Is spoon used in the context I'm thinking of? Or did it mean something totally different back then. Either way, this song just may be to hot for radio, haha jk.

  • @ironduke27 In the 1920s, to "spoon" was to hug and kiss. Its meaning has evolved somewhat since then. Compared to the contemporary definition, it was somewhat innocent then.

  • @bsgs98 Okay, thanks for letting me know.

  • @bsgs98 My Grandmother who is now 101 says it pretty much means the same thing as it always has. A form of affection between a couple. Where the man lays front to back with the girl. They fit together like spoons., not as innocent as you think...good girls generally didn't spoon back then unless they were engaged. She is from RI married in 1928.

  • @ironduke27 I think it's actually referring to winter pouring snow as if from a spoon in that particular phrase. "Snowtime, take no time to stay outdoors and spoon." That's always been my take on it. The song says the girl is afraid of being out in the darkness, so the guy is pleading to the moon to stay out and keep the light shining. Snow would cover the moon up (and also wreck his plans for sitting outside with his gal). Hope that helps!

  • @ironduke27 To spoon means to pitch woo. doncha know nuthin?

  • Man,I love this. Why haven't I found this sooner!? :P

  • i like the flying deuces version :)

  • out of every version i've heard of this song so far, this one is the best. i have it on repeat, thanks for posting.

  • I understand Nora Bayes had made a recording for Victors, But instead they released the Billy Murray recording instead. I do like Ruth Etting recording.

  • I wish Victors would have released Nora Bayes record, but instead they released the Billy Murry `s . I do like Ruth Ettings version.

  • From 1944 film "Shine on Harvest Moon" with Dennis Morgan and Ann Sheridan ...MY favorite movie

  • Actually Harvest Moon Magick is the name of Chapter 3 in Ellen Dugan's wonderful book! This song is even mentioned on the title page of Chapter 3: Shine on, shine on harvest moon, Up in the sky....

  • I just got done reading Autumn Equinox: The Enchantment of Mabon by Ellen Dugan! She mentions Harvest Moon Magick. So at Wikipedia I typed in Harvest Moon and discovered the lyrics to this whimsical, romantic song! It is nice getting to hear Ruth Etting's sweet voice sing this classic song!

  • Possibly the best rendition of this classic ever! Though I'll always have a soft spot for Oliver Hardy's classic version.

Thank you, Ms. Etting for another wonderful memory.

  • Ruth was beautiful and she had an incredible voice.

  • I love this song, sung by such a beautiful women with an incredible voice. Ms. Ruth was such a talented beauty.

  • i am so happy to hear this song. I began to like this song when i was still 6 or 7 coz this is one of the favorite songs of my late father. Thanks for posting this. To my father, thank you for the songs you used to sing. They will linger on ...I missed your voice. I love you.

  • Ruth Etting is one of America's greatest treasures, and it's a disgusting shame that she has been forgotten, while sluts, tramps, and whores now take the limelight.

  • @Cohzaku of course she was married to a gangster - Mo the Gimp, who subsequently stood trial for shooting her boyfriend.

  • @davecollinsmusic It should be noted that Ruth and Moe Snyder were already divorced when the shooting took place. It was still quite a scandal. He only spent one year in jail.

  • best voice ever heard

  • Wonderful, and the pictures of Ruth Etting are a treasure

  • Great post..love Ruth Etting.

  • I am liking this..

  • Thank you so much for posting this!!!

  • The next harvest moon won't be until 2029. So, please take some time to enjoy it.

  • Happy Harvest Moon! Fall begins this evening with the harvest moon.

  • THANK YOU MY MAM ~ GRANNY ELIZA, KATH ~&~ ABE , WE ALL SANG THIS WONDERFUL SONG MANY A TIME ~ SUNSHINE SMILES ~ NAMASTE :):):):)

  • @0:50 that looks like wheeler and woolsey. does anyone know what film it's from?

  • @wallofvideo I believe it was from the 1934 film "Hips Hips Hooray!"

  • @bsgs98 thanks! i just checked imdb and indeed wheeler and woolsey did appear in "hips hips hooray!"

  • @wallofvideo not sure but our pal in the round glasses is no other than George Burns. In one of his writings, he and the other guy had been in Vaudeville for a while, the movies here were made, and a short time later they parted company and he traveled with his brother,as Burns and Burns, then when George and Gracie Allen met, the two knew things were going to be firecrackers! Just a littlle FYI for ya.

  • @stitch656 Not quite. The photo shows Woolsey. Often Woolsey is mistaken for Burns. Woolsey was in show business nearly a decade before Burns made his first motion picture. Later Burns adopted Woolsey’s trademark eyeglasses.

  • @stitch656 that does look a lot like george burns, but now i'm almost sure the 2 are wheeler and woolsey. the photo was probably taken on the set of "hips, hips, hooray" (1934).

  • Schoner gruner Mond von Alabama leuchte uns! Shine on Harvest Moon clearly inspired Kurt Weill!

  • it's funny, i've read that economically times were very hard in 1931, but you wouldn't know it from listening to this beautiful song. i guess a lot of entertainers and their audiences knew how to make the best of a very difficult situation.

  • lovely!! She was a torch singer....

  • oh what great times!

  • so smooth....love it. thanks for sharing

  • love this song, love her voice..

  • This recording was actually an unissued take done in July 1931,then finally issued in the fall of 1935 on Columbia Blue Wax label.

  • What a Treat, Reminds me of Laurel And Hardy...

  • Yes. Laurel And Hardy did this in one their movies. And they danced to it. I forget the name of the movie, but I think they were in the military.

  • Laurel and Hardy sang this in the 1939 film, "The Flying Deuces." Its located elsewhere on YouTube.

  • I was playing my clarinet along with her and noticed a slight difference in the vocal. This is as I remember it....So shine on Shine on harvest moon Up in the sky I ain't had no lovin' since JANUARY, FEBRUARY, JUNE or JULY Snow time ain't no time to stay outdoors and spoon So shine on Shine on harvest moon for me and my gal Snow time ain't no time to stay outdoors and spoon So shine on Shine on harvest moon for me and my gal She has a beautiful voice !
