You gotta love the little buggers ... and this one is extremely cute. It's sad every time you have to let one go. And it's not so crazy to pay that much money to try and help them. Why do you do it ... because you love them. Don't want to know how much money I've spent at the vet's the past few years. I do notice a huge difference between the rats I got from a shelter (therefore from a pet store) and those I got from a breeder. They are soooo much healthier! Never buy them from a pet store!!!

Wanna know how stupid I am?? I actually paid $200 to remove my rat's tumor when he got one. Why did I do such a thing?? :(

Word to the wise, though. Feed these things well. Don't give them french fries on a regular basis. Believe me. It won't end well.

@dogeymon83 $200?! OMG! Did you take him to a hollywood vet or something?! It usually doesn't cost more than $80 at most. I paid $60. I worked in a shop. someone dropped off a very smart pet rat so to save him from being a feeder (rats with tumors don't get to be pets) I helped him out and then got him a good home. I didn't go to the cheapest vet and it was $60. you just got totally ripped off.btw, tumors can be pretty common in rats. so don't feel too bad :) sorry for your loss though :(

Hey i have two male rats they are 10 weeks old ... how do you get them to sit on their back like that so i can do that to them? when i tickle their bellies they sort of run away :(

@leah3301 I think ten weeks might be still too young, it took mine at least 5 or 6 months until she let me scratch her belly like that. plus she usually has to be pretty sleepy cause otherwise she is too excited and just wants to run and burrow around.

@leah3301 hey, I don't know this one was a bit dozy, he was a bit like sid the sloth...very laid back. I had a hamster once and i used to take him out of his cage when he was still asleep in a ball so he used to lay in my hand upside down feet and bum up in the air! Just get them when they are just waking up and dozy :)

From the video it looks like the rat is still under a year old, my guess is between 4-6 months. Male rats are usually less excitable and less prone to running around and exploring a lot.

the thing most people don't understand ... all animals carry disease and parasites , and rats are the ones who carry the most , over the generations it became almost an instinct : rat=parasies and disease ,it's the same like fire :P even a baby knows not to touch it although it has never seen fire before :P , that's why people can't stand them . if you get over that instinct use your mind and think : if I keep my rat clean it and I will be healthy , you will be ok :D .

females tend to be more active, males tend to be lazier. It depends on what type of energy you want. Personally, I preferred males (but they always chunked out on me - they get very slothful when they're full grown).

Most of the time the tumors are benign and can be surgically removed (of course a competent vet has to evaluate that). Also, spaying at a younger age reduces the risk of mammary tumors. Do you have a vet who is knowledgeable with rats?
