I agree. I'm not much one for reading poetry. But Mark's music (and Bill Mallonee's and David Eugene Edwards') , especially his last three albums, have inspired me to write lyrics. "House of Broken Dreams" is one of, if not my favourite, Mark Heard songs. When I first heard it I played it over and over again - something I usually do not do, even with songs I like. The world lost a great artist in August 1992.

I don’t read poetry, can’t do it. But listening to Mark has taught me to appreciate musical poetry. “Nothing sounds so sad, a cry to the unknown, the fundamental sigh of all who’ve come this way before”, this to me turns pain into poetry, a kind of strange beauty to it. Or, “Memories will last, and cover certain scars, acquired in the daily grind of being what we are” I personally have never heard better song writing.
